Someone asked me the other day, “If Trump can just do whatever he wants, then a Democratic president can too. why is Medicare for All impossible? Why are reparations impossible? Why is anything off the table?”

Trump bought stock in the UFC’s parent company while promoting fights set to take place at the White House on his birthday, HuffPost has learned

This person does not use social media (they don’t see the point)

Ответ для Phil Lewis

Whoever the person is sounds great tbh.

Ответ для Phil Lewis

Extremely healthy behavior, given that posting that sentiment on here would quickly attract “actually it’s much harder than that” quote dunks from realpolitik pedants obsessed with limiting the horizon of the possible.

Ответ для Prettyman

It’s not about limiting the horizon of the possible. I want all these great things too, but I am also fighting with idiots in my life to get them to vote. That’s the fight we’re fighting; if we all voted and they all voted we’d win every time… but we keep letting a minority win bcus fools amongst us

Ответ для databeastff

What if a candidate actually gave them something to vote for

Ответ для Fair Play For Cuba

Candidates constantly give voters things to vote for.

Ответ для Fair Play For Cuba

Roe v Wade was something to vote for. VRA was something to vote for. Not having your neighbors dragged to concentration camps was something to vote for. But you only see it as fear-mongering because you took having these rights for granted. The baseline of just getting them back is enough for me.

Ответ для databeastff

I don't see that as fear mongering. I votes for those things in 2020. Biden kept sending people to concentration camps and you know the rest

Ответ для Fair Play For Cuba

So things are better or worse now? Once the baseline is only democrats can win, the opposition can be progressives. Right now we’re fighting a battle right of center instead of fighting how much further left we can go

Ответ для databeastff

If youve lowered your expectation to just getting back what youve recently lost then we have basically nothing in common

Ответ для Fair Play For Cuba

You cannot get more until you’ve gotten what you lost back. You think ur gonna get universal healthcare when we don’t even have voting rights? We don’t need to have anything in common. I know I’m not going to magically get more from less.

Ответ для databeastff

who was on the ballot promising to shut down the concentration camps? Because Obama and Biden both expanded them

Ответ для databeastff

I recall being encouraged to vote blue because THEY wanted to take away abortion rights. Many times. Every time. And I always did. And when vaunted Blue had the numbers to push it through they were very interested in the aridity of gunpowder.

Ответ для Timothy Chalmette

~”It would be better to get consensus for this than to ram it through. We need to keep our powder dry and save political capital for another fight. Besides, the Supreme Court has ruled on this. And we make sure to ask anyone put forward for a seat on the bench how they feel about Roe v Wade.”~

Ответ для Timothy Chalmette

Ur right in being upset, but one didn’t codify the OTHER ACTUALLY undid it. That’s the difference.

Ответ для databeastff

Because they are motivated to deliver. Shitty things for shitty people, sure. But they fucking deliver for their voters. They don’t worry about how dry their damned powder is. They don’t worry about appealing to their opposition. They work on things they want to.

Ответ для Fair Play For Cuba

You're saying "what if a candidate promosed to break the law". If that's what you want, you dont want a president. You just want a lefty Trump.

Ответ для Icarus_Rising_23

That's true if you think the highest of Trump's transgressions is breaking the law. I care about people, not laws

Ответ для Fair Play For Cuba

We already know you and your ilk just want a lefty despot. Adults know that is a terrible idea. One day you will grow up. Maybe.

Ответ для Icarus_Rising_23

I want the defeat of fascism and the peaceful dissolution of the USA

Ответ для Fair Play For Cuba

Yeah. You're a idiot.

Ответ для databeastff

Dems won a trifecta in 2021 and didn’t do these things then either.

Ответ для Hare 🍉

Biden brought us back from Covid ruin. Inflation reduction act, chips act, american rescue plan, infra investment & jobs act… 4 bills in 2 years. What are you talking about? 3 were absolutely necessary, and the other is important for future economic reasons (especially with China threatening Taiwan)

Ответ для databeastff

Biden chose half measures guaranteed to backfire like they have

Ответ для databeastff

Democrats have held the presidency 50% of the time since 2000. They just don't want to.

Ответ для Phil McDuff

The president doesn’t make laws. Everytime they held all 3 they passed very important bills.

Ответ для databeastff

Is that how Obama got rid of medical bankruptcy in the USA?

Ответ для Phil McDuff

"no you see there's always an excuse, that's why we can't just do stuff."

Ответ для databeastff

Most of the shit Mamadani’s accomplished is simply because he’s using the power of his office to do things that none of his Dem predecessors cared to, not that they couldn’t. Maybe you wouldn’t have a hard time convincing people to vote if Mamdani’s style of governance wasn’t exceptional.

Ответ для Robin Broshi

They’re not voting Mamdani nationally. Warren was right there, Bernie was there… Biden got the votes. You can say establishment money all u want… not enough people votes for them. I voted Warren in the primary. I’m gonna vote AOC when she runs. Let’s see if everyone else does, if not it’s on voters

Ответ для databeastff

Nonvoters aren’t all fools; many are reasonably skeptical of anyone with a D next to their name regardless of whether it’s Biden or Bernie. Mamdani won because he appealed to those skeptics and his tangible policies and disregard for bad faith critiques are why he’s the model going forward.

Answer: the institutions that ensure a Republican president has free rein (SCOTUS, media) work to constrict a Democratic president. We saw it with Biden. Institutional change is needed.

Ответ для Mina

Reading the SCOTUS' definition of "Official Acts" very carefully shows exactly this problem, and I got tired of explaining it to everyone else a while ago. Quite also visible is the lesser point about "the media" who will absolutely make a mountain out of a ditch rather than spank the other's hand.

Ответ для Kereminde

People have been calling for Dems to pack the courts for a long time. Trump 100% would if they weren’t on his side. It’s total bullshit to claim SCOTUS is an actual block against a dem with no concern for playing by the rules.

Ответ для Guy with a beard and opinions

Should I clarify "this SCOTUS in particular"?

Ответ для Kereminde

I mean it really shouldn't matter. He was already president and never will be again. The fact that he didn't try should tell you it's a question of will

Ответ для Mina

The SCOTUS that proclaimed Trump king stopped Biden's efforts on relieving student loans. There is little Democrats can accomplish on the federal level when Republicans control Congress and SCOTUS and have morphed into Trump lackeys with loyalty to him alone.

Ответ для Hecuba's Daughter
Ответ для Mina

Good answer. We have to ask —now that this system has been show to be a tool to destroy democracy and install a Republican dictator—what then? It would be CRIMINAL to pretend that isn’t real and pretend to go back to status quo. (We can’t.) Anyone who does is abetting the next run at full fascism.

Ответ для Mina

The SCOTUS can be packed by the president so no. That’s wrong.

Why we need more of an APC and less of a Newsome. I say this as someone in a "blue" state whose governor is quickly becoming a right-wing schill

It is because in general what Trump is doing is breaking norms, and the things that Democrats want to do require going through the legislature to get funded. A lot of what he does doesn’t require funding or not at the scale that for example, of Medicare for all program would need.

Ответ для @PJLM

the iran war has already cost billions of dollars and they've stopped even pretending it's not a war

Ответ для gnocchi dokey (she or they)

True, although all Presidents since Viet Nam have been been given and taken the authority to undertake military actions now and find funding later. It is less out of the norm than some of his other actions such as blatantly grifting off pretty much anything he can or demolishing the West Wing.

Ответ для @PJLM

It’s crazy how it’s only possible to break norms for evil

Presidency is only one leg of the three-legged stool. All three branches must remain strong and independent for the government to function properly. If one branch amasses too much power, the stool topples.

Why is it easier to single-handedly flood the upstairs bathroom than it is to build a new house

Ответ для Brandon Bird

unfortunately a perfect explanation

Ответ для Brandon Bird

Partially because Democrats will vow to oppose the house before it's even proposed

Ответ для Brandon Bird

Flood the upstairs ICE bathroom then.

Because the Democratic party is controlled opposition--bought and paid for by the billionaire Epstein class.

yea they dont want to do that sometimes its their own personal ideology, sometimes its pressure from billionaire donors, but the result is the same. the mainstream democrats dont want to help people as much as the republicans want to hurt people 🤷‍♀️

Because Trump is breaking the law in a way that has caused a massive popular backlash that he can sustain only because the Right has a hammerlock on the only institutions that could reign him in. Did you tell them that?

Because Dems don't want any of that

Ответ для Skeletal Minion

What part of "he had two Senators who weren't going to vote to weaken the Byrd rules/filibuster to pass something" do you not understand?

Ответ для thepowerbroker

What part of my post did you not understand? The potential votes of two senators didn't matter because, again, the parliamentarian was not overruled. I'm staring what literally happened while you're commenting on a vote that did not happen

Ответ для Skeletal Minion

That's not how any of this works

Ответ для Skeletal Minion

I told you why this didnt happen 20 minutes prior to this bsky.app/profile/bumb...

BumboJumbo

Harris, and yes harris couldve overruled the parliamentarian. A republican senator then would have almost certainly appealed the decision, which would have then gone to a vote of the senate, which we would have lost because it was tied and a tied chamber is beholden to the most brainwormed member

Ответ для BumboJumbo

You agreed with the point I made--that Harris could've overruled the parliamentarian--then talked about a potential vote that quite literally did not happen. Idk what to tell you

Ответ для Skeletal Minion

Why do you think JD vance isnt overruling the parlimentarian for trump's ballroom money? Because he knows he doesnt have the votes. Same with harris.

Ответ для Skeletal Minion

You could tell us how it could actually succeed? The point of this shit is to actually get things through, not to get a 5 second sugar-high doing a "one weird trick" that blows up in your face, predictably.

Ответ для Skeletal Minion

It takes 60 votes to override the Parliamentian during reconciliation, not 51. That's why none of the things the Parliamentian noted during the OBBB were included in the final version. Stop getting your political information from someone who lies to you to sell his books.

Ответ для STEMthebleeding
Ответ для the wokemaster

Now, and pay attention because I don't want you to sprain something - Which of those had ANYTHING to do with reconciliation? The answer is - none. The CBA has it's own rules. And by the way, McCain and Reid reached an agreement that prevented the "nuclear option". Get better op-eds.

Senate reaches deal on judicial nominationsHarry Reid says 14 judges whose consideration had been blocked by Republicans will get votes by May 7www.cbsnews.com
Ответ для the wokemaster

And so you would still need 50 votes to do that... which they did not have. What part of "they did not have 50 votes to gut the filibuster and we know that because they tried multiple fucking times" do you not understand?

Ответ для Skeletal Minion

Of course they matter - They can literally scuttle the whole fucking bill. And in fact they tried over and over to get them to carve out the fillibuster and Manchinema refused, publicly. Did you notice that Trump never actually overrules the parliamentarian? Why is that?

Ответ для thepowerbroker

Whenever Dems actually do the "one weird trick/throw random shit at the wall and assume it'll work out" leftist strategy (like they did with student loans) it doesn't work and they still get raked over the coals

Ответ для Skeletal Minion

in all likelihood the parliamentarian wasn't overruled so the dems could avoid a losing vote that would have embarrassed biden.

Ответ для Richard Brecky presents: JELLYBEAN!

The parliamentarian wasn't overruled because they didn't want to overrule the parliamentarian.

Ответ для Richard Brecky presents: JELLYBEAN!

I was simply simplifying the statement. Calm down.

Ответ для THIS MACHINE LIFTS WEIGHTS

...Because they did not have the votes to move the legislation forward once the parliamentarian was overruled. Do you think Joe "The Fillibuster is my God and Sacrifices Must Be Made to Her Glory" Manchin was going to vote for legislation which functionally gutted the fillibuster, yes or no?

Ответ для thepowerbroker

Vote blue no matter who, right?

Ответ для THIS MACHINE LIFTS WEIGHTS

There's just always magically enough Dems to cross the aisle to keep the Trump admin legislation and nominations rolling, just like there were always just enough to cross the aisle to prevent progress under Obama and Biden. It's a pattern that speaks to motivation. Parties accomplish what they want.

Ответ для THIS MACHINE LIFTS WEIGHTS

Yes, correct - Your saying we would have been better off if people in WV didnt vote blue and we didn't get RESCUE or IRA or KBJ?

Ответ для thepowerbroker

I understand it. I just don't think that "these Democrats destroyed the Democratic agenda" is a very good argument for the efficacy of the Democratic Party as it currently exists

Ответ для Fair Play For Cuba

In what sense? It's just basic reality of voting - Voters gave Democrats 48 strong votes and 2 centrist dipshits. They refused to give them any other strong votes. How would leftists solve the problem of "nobody but a MAGA freak and literally this one guy can get elected in WV after 2010?

Ответ для thepowerbroker

I do not think you have accurately described the problem

Ответ для Fair Play For Cuba

Which part is incorrect? If there were 48 pure Bernie-pilled leftist votes + Manchinema how do you suppose they could have gotten more passed than Biden?

Ответ для thepowerbroker

Their job was to give Biden the cover to break his promise.

Ответ для Skeletal Minion

Harris did not have that power.

Ответ для thepowerbroker

Yeah there's always just enough Democrat senators to fuck us, it's call the rotating villain. They don't actually intend to govern in our favor.

Ответ для Alt US Wallet Inspector Service

Okay I understand you guys came up with this moronic conspiracy buzzphrase but if it's "rotating villain" why the fuck does the villain never fucking rotate? Do you think it's pretend that we had literally a zero seat "majority" or that Joe Manchin is, in fact, is not a centrist dipshit?

Ответ для thepowerbroker

And now that Manchin and Sinema are out, there's different Democrats who narrowly block legislation or aid Republicans. That's why it's a fuckjng rotating villain. It's always some lame duck asshole not up for reelection there to block better things from happening and aid Trump.

Ответ для Alt US Wallet Inspector Service

It's not a conspiracy theory, it's a fucking observation. You're just too Hamilton brained to realize you're voting for controlled opposition.

Ответ для Alt US Wallet Inspector Service

Ответ для Alt US Wallet Inspector Service

Yes it was, in fact, the left faction of voters in PA who gave us Fetterman. Deal with it asshole.

Ответ для thepowerbroker

I don't live in PA, and I don't vote for Democrats. You're shadowboxing. The Democrats had 4 years to make things better and prevent Republicans from taking back power and all they did was sit on their thumbs and give Israel a blank check for genocide. Your theory of power shit the bed.

Ответ для thepowerbroker

it's really funny you think "rotating villain" means that, like, it HAS to be a completely different person every time

Ответ для Kargolyn Longfang 🏳️‍⚧️

Yes, that would be the definition of "rotating", otherwise you would have to admit that Joe Manchin is a real human being with his own beliefs and goals that somewhat, but not overwhelmingly match 48 other Democrats

Ответ для thepowerbroker

Funny how that never applies to Republicans who eagerly line up to lick shit out of Trump's ass. Almost as if the democratic party has a vested interest in nothing getting done so they can run on false promises to do the same shit for DECADES.

Ответ для Alt US Wallet Inspector Service

They actually do it all the time, you just dont pay any fucking attention. Its such a basic part of the fabric of things that Trump doesn't actually even TRY to get things passed. He'll whine about the Save Act every couple of weeks and thats the extent of it www.nbcnews.com/politics/con...

Ответ для Alt US Wallet Inspector Service

You better pray the Dems get more populist before the torches and pitchforks come out, because something tells me you're pretty terrified of that option.

Ответ для Skeletal Minion

when I only mentioned what did happen (they didn't overrule parliamentarian). Sure, the vote probably would've failed. But it didn't get that far, did it? Why is that? Is it because *they literally did not overrule the parliamentarian*? Can you read? Just gonna mute this thread, but have fun ig

Ответ для Skeletal Minion

The fact you confuse adjectives and nouns by saying “Democrat president” only tells us you fell for far right propaganda (and don’t understand how congress works).

Fair point. Dems play nice and fix things when they get power.

Because trump is destroying, not building.

I want those great things too. That being said people will soon discover the “coffers are empty”. We are going to go through some difficult times even if Democrats get into office. This will be the one time when politicians will be telling the truth when they say there is no money. Just my opinion

Ответ для Ben of TFRY

The last time that happened, Dems were one heart attack away from having a 5-4 majority and having control for decades. Which happened. Then Mitch McConnel stalled out the hearing for a year, and then fast-tracked the next, and now it's 3-6 instead. It would be a very different conversation now.

Ответ для Robby Bevard

Yeah, it's funny how one party has all the power when they're the minority as well as the majority. Weird that Dems never pull those levers.

Ответ для THIS MACHINE LIFTS WEIGHTS

It's worth noting that Obama refuse to wield power even to appoint a just as he was supposed to have in the first place. The Democrats utterly refuse to wield power to benefit us. The best they can do is wine that it's not fair when Trump gets two appointees

Ответ для Robby Bevard

Trump 2.0 is certainly going to replace the oldest justices, probably before the midterms, to lock in that 6-3. So it's a different discussion now.

The democrats have allowed the republicans through complacency and incompitence to make the courts one of the pillars of their conservative movement. You can complain and cry about election losses, but those are inevitable after long enough, they needed to do ANYTHING else to stop this.

I don't think most Democratic politicians actually want those things.

Trump isn’t adding things, he’s undoing them. That’s why. It’s harder to build. He’s not making changes that don’t involve attacking things that have already been accomplished. Actually I don’t WANT our country to be governed by fiat. I like it when our elected officials take actions based on the will of the people. (Does that ever happen?)

Because the Supreme Court decided that anything Trump did was Constitutional.

Ответ для Fair Play For Cuba

Ответ для Fair Play For Cuba

Need congress and DOJ for that. Wanna guess who holds those offices? I want better politicians too, but we can’t pretend that this is only on elected officials working harder. It’s on the idiots in our lives that do not vote.

Ответ для databeastff

No you don’t though. Just find them to be a national security threat without oversight from any other body. Obama was doing this to American citizens. It’s entirely possible, if improbable because nobody wants to work anymore.

Ответ для clarence

No, you do. You just said Obama was doing it to citizens. You did not say Obama was doing it to SCOTUS or congress; which would have gotten him impeached and removed. Also The president isn’t gonna challenge the court cus they are in cahoots. So ur “no one wants to work” thing is just frustration.

Ответ для databeastff

I get it, the situation is frustrating, oppressive even. The democrats don’t have the power to put people in jail or put a stop to this. They need conservatives to work with them, and we know what kind of criminal sycophants they are. So yes, dems need majorities or it’s just a fever dream

Ответ для databeastff

This all sounds like the same song and dance we heard about everything the base wants but the money doesn’t. I have no hope whatsoever we’ll come back from where we are now because of this inherent failure. The cowardice is bone deep.

Ответ для clarence

We need to vote. The base keeps complaining (and I’m with you)… but we sit around, don’t give them a majority and complain about how they can’t push stuff with a minority that WE let happen. Then it’s “well republicans blocked things with a minority”, and the response to that is Manchin and Sinema.

Ответ для databeastff

It truly sucks. The dems are not very effective. But the blame is ALSO on everyone who sits it out and isn’t smart enough to see the chasm of difference between the two parties. And I agree the money isn’t aligned with the base, but damn the base doesn’t vote.

Ответ для databeastff

Sucky candidates and sucky performance don’t make people want to support them. I have completely stopped donating after seeing them flounder for a decade. They gotta act like they want what I want. I want to hear fighters, and they keep talking like HR reps laying me off. They lost me.

Ответ для databeastff

Sounds like they should make people want to vote for them, perhaps by promising to do things instead of cradling their balls while they talk about The System and reasons we need to compromise with fascists

Ответ для databeastff

But when they get majorities, they don't act

Ответ для What Remains of Amy Raven

Ответ для What Remains of Amy Raven

They had both houses and the presidency for half of Obama’s term and passed the ACA. That took a lot. But dems, much like their voters want everything perfect instead of voting with party as the conservatives and their voters do. They are one band one sound from voters thru reps currently

Ответ для databeastff

As stupid and corrupt as that is. And here we are voters telling why we won’t vote for someone of party bcus they’re not progressive enough while someone who is regressive gets in if we don’t. Idk who you think suffers when they don’t get a vote but they lose a job opportunity we lose rights

Ответ для databeastff

Or perhaps because they're not progressive at all Because they promise to continue funding genocide and let corporations bleed us dry

Ответ для databeastff

I've frequently seen this straw man and it shows the disdain Democrats have for voters No, we don't denand perfection

Ответ для What Remains of Amy Raven

Yes, we do. Because it’s not about what one of us wants, the base doesn’t get together behind anyone because my young neighbor wants someone like AOC and my old neighbor wants someone like Biden. Therefore they have to split that hair to get both of them behind them or one of them is not supporting

Destroying is easy. Building is hard.

Ответ для thucidydes

there is plenty to “destroy” tho. ice/dhs. huge cuts to war. huge savings from cancelling all subsidies and contracts with musk and other maga businesses. there is all manner of things conservatives have built that dems could destroy but don’t really seem willing to do that either!

The Supreme Court stopped Bidens college loan forgiveness. the dems need to pay them off.

It was never my impression that the Dem establishment wants Medicare 4 all. Some individual progressives for sure, but not the party

You know why.

Because Trump wants to do these things but the Democrats don't want to do good things.

Cause both parties are working for capitalism. The right pushes nationalistic fascism culture wars to their voter base. And the left tells their voter base to live and work with it

Because Democrats don't want to do those things when they have power to, as their billionaire owners tell them not to. We need a third party, or at least to clean house on most Democrats over a certain age to get anything the normal person wants and needs.

To what end though? Become a true resistance party that wants progress and to make life worth living for the working class instead of serving the rich? What a nightmare.

Yeah it’s crazy it’s almost like you can do whatever you want if you just go for it, it’s really weird how nobody does that for good things inside of eating babies tho

We don't have those things for two reasons: 1) Democrats are always worried about backlash; ie. Tea Party, January 6th insurrection 2) Democratic voters are inconsistent; they might show up for a presidential election, then ditch the midterms, so progress made is loss quickly

Ответ для veronicanyce

3) dems don’t want it

bsky.app/profile/davi...

David Ryan Miller

Earlier this year, I overheard someone in Democratic politics in a private setting remark they were "jealous" of how Trump II went in and did what it wanted whereas Democrats run up against resistance and just wring their hands (not saying that's not wrong, but "jealous" was quite a word choice).

The smartest person I know (that being @ironspike.bsky.social) keeps pointing to the example Zoran Mamdani is setting by just actually doing good shit and fixing problems on the regular. A better world is possible, as long as we elect people who aren’t paid to be tame opposition to the plutocrats.

It looks as if all we needed to do was pay a whole bunch of people to look the other way. We could have crowdfunded a revolution!

The reason is that people in charge of the Democratic Party don't want to do those things.

I feel like one of the reasons he's at 35% approval is precisely because he tries to do crazy stuff. Why would anyone want to emulate the guy everyone hates?

Ответ для Behemoth & Leviathan, LP

Yep seen many similar threads. I don’t want to hear “it will decades to fix what’s been broke” . If Rs can act with all alacrity to enact very unpopular if not unconstitutional laws, then there all kinds of things that Ds can do for good. Oh, SCOTUS will knock it down? Fix SCOTUS .

Because the SCOTUS operatives with lifetime appointments are there to make sure that doesn't happen for Democratic presidents. For the benefit of the American people and not the oligarchs they serve. bsky.app/profile/phil...

Someone asked me the other day, “If Trump can just do whatever he wants, then a Democratic president can too. why is Medicare for All impossible? Why are reparations impossible? Why is anything off the table?”

Ответ для web_rant

If you are going to go frull Trump, but for the left side of the Democrats, then add 8 more judges to SCOTUS and they aren't a problem.

Ответ для Danno - Sigurd

I'm sure that'll slide through the current Senate just like warm butter. Very probably the next Senate, too, since we have only a small chance at gaining the slimmest of majorities there.

Ответ для Your Auntie Grizelda

The suggestion of putting this all through would be after the next presidential election and IF you are doing the rest then you could also kill the fake filibuster, so the slimmest of margins would work. I'm not saying any of this would happen, just if they wanted to Trump it they could.

Ответ для Danno - Sigurd

That'd mean most of the judiciary would have to become partisan-- at every level-- for success, since only a few decent judges are what's put the brakes on ANY trump-chaos. Do you really want a country with an almost entirely partisan judiciary? And... whose idea of partisan? Center? Far left?

Ответ для Your Auntie Grizelda

It is already that way.

Ответ для Danno - Sigurd

The point is that ***it shouldn't be.*** God DAMN. People are just letting their stoopid-flags fly these days.

Ответ для Your Auntie Grizelda

I completely agree with that last statement. Some people just can't accept that the only way to deal with a politically appointed system is a political solution, not just leaving it in place.

Ответ для web_rant

oh well guess i should pack for the labor camp

Ответ для web_rant

lifetime appointments can be solved by abruptly shortening their lifespan :)

It’s a good question. There lies the dilemma. Trump gets away with it because of having the GOP in his pocket. But when you think about it, that’s really not what we want for our government so it’s one of those damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

In short, because the Supreme Clurt won’t do jack shit to stop Trump, but will with any Democratic president.

Answer: Because the billionaires bankrolling (controlling) BOTH parties don't want to do those things. Doing those things means they need to pay taxes. They don't want to pay taxes. They will move to other countries to avoid paying taxes.

Two words: Supreme Court Justices Have Lifetime Appointments

Ответ для Corbs

There are no billionaire donors that want that, obviously.

Answer: Not possible unless Dems control all 3 branches of government

And what did you tell that dumbass?

Ответ для Suzan

What I want is voters who understand why we need Dem majorities in Congress, and how to get them.

Ответ для Suzan

In my view, we have a lot of fighters and planners in the Democratic party. I look forward to what happens when we retake the majority.

Because they have to actually want it first

WSJ today has a column warning that the slush fund will boomerang & Dems will impose "reparations for Trump and slavery." Like that would be a bad thing.

Media environment. Look at the asymmetry over coverage of Benghazi vesus dead soldiers in Iran. Look at ‘But her emails’ versus Hegseth having group chats. Dems would not be given the media pass that gives GOP room to do all kinds of heinous shit.

Ответ для ShipperX

The Democrats should do them anyway and ignore the media. But their donors wouldn't like that.

Ответ для Island of Reil

They should. Because it would be good policy. But let’s acknowledge that the entire media system would react entirely differently (same with SCOTUS)

Ответ для ShipperX

So? Maybe they should get a spine and ignore the media. But, again, that would upset their donors.

Ответ для ShipperX

Republicans also have the strategy of doing too much for the media to effectively cover. If Democrats want to pack the courts and abolish ICE they can easily distract the media by knocking down the new East Wing and having a trans woman as “honorary First Lady for a day.”

A compliant Congressional majority is what lets him “just do whatever he wants” - I don’t want that: I want a Congressional majority that will ask hard questions, will seek input from experts when needed, and will only vote for or against something for objectively valid reasons

Ответ для Terraformer

Ah sorry, Parliamentarian says no :(

Every time Biden tried to do something, someone sued, left and right, and the Supreme Court almost always ruled against Biden saying he was taking action that had to go through Congress first. The rules are different for Trump and the right isn’t pushing back at all.

Ответ для bretton

What delusional world do you inhabit where that's true? They had a 50/50 split (48 dems + 2 independents + VP to tie-break) in the Senate. The GOP still blocked most of the good stuff...yet they STILL passed the largest climate action in the world, raised children out of poverty, expanded healthcare

Ответ для SpryOldLorax

Where's that climate action at today? Gutted, where is universal healthcare today? Non-existent. Keep blaming Republicans when Dems have all the power to pack the courts, drop the fillibuster, and arrest MAGA. But they did none of the above. They're okay with status quo

Ответ для bretton

And why is it gutted? Because the "Left" joined MAGA to defeat Harris and allowed Trump to win, and handed both the House & the Senate to the GOP, who then proceeded to gut it. That's not the fault of Democrats. That's the fault of Voters, and the GOP they elected and gave power to. DUH.

This is instructive in that demagoguery creates worse public politics exactly because a lot of people will think it means you can automatically do the same demagoguery for good outcomes and, you cannot. You can't feed a baby with a gun just because someone else can shoot one with a gun.

Because the biggest obstacles to Democratic goals aren’t laws, they’re actual challenges of scarcity and human nature.

Banning guns. Organic food mandates.

Trump also cannot actually do whatever he wants.

Because the things he’s doing would be impossible if the Congressional majority & the SC didn’t also want them done. He has zero power without their enabling, they could stop all this destruction at any time.

The fact a lot of the stuff he does gets unwound by the courts should be a clue

Exactly. I hope the next Democrat president runs the country by EO, erases Trump and his administration from history, and makes real, substantial changes that benefit Americans, not himself.

Because they don’t actually want it. They don’t act like these things are life/death decisions because they’re not the ones suffering. Dems worry about decorum & status quo more than they worry about working class.

I don’t really want to defend Democrats, but most of what Donald Trump wants to do are: dismantle federal agencies into nonfunctionality, and use what’s left to either make deals for personal profit or hurt people he doesn’t like. Those are all things he can do without Congress.

democrats acting like they have to follow “the rules” after watching the republicans spend a decade doing whatever they want

Supreme Court was bought.

Because any democrats that isn't openly a progressive and supports progressive policies doesn't want Medicare for All. They just say that do like how Republicans say that they want to help working class families.

democrats love standing arms akimbo in opposition to republicans, but DAMN, they just can’t seem to prioritise ANYTHING they claim to care about on campaign trails, and feign powerlessness when they DO gain office. it’s all a show. The only change they seek is their stock portfolio going 📈

It's because they bow to the same corporate masters. They can and should do all those things and more, but they won't. No amount of vote blue, no matter who will fix the system. Study marx.

This, this and more of this

He is such a jerk.🤢🤮

Because Dems won't have Congress and the Courts captured in the way that MAGA does. Trump didn't do this coup by his lonesome; his goon squad is huge and was built up over decades. Trump's the mask; not the muscle.

Trump can break the law and do what he wants because he rigged the courts and Congress is afraid his supporters will kill them.

Democratic presidents would have to want those things. So far none of them have.

Because that's not a good thing, and is not something aspirational, or how anything should work

Because dems are pussies

Mamdani proving that it can be done and fairly quickly

Damn good question.

UBI needs to be implemented as well then. Give the people a hand up instead of a beat down

A Democratic who wanted to do whatever she or he wants, would need a majority in both houses of Congress. They would have to be members willing to do whatever the president wanted no matter the cost. In addition, the president would need the Supreme Court to be in their pocket.

They just do what ever they want because that’s not how democracy works. And I don’t know if folks are really ready yet for Left wing populist authoritarianism…. If that’s even possible in America.

Donald Trump it's so really true you should try something new and different every day..for wellbeing.

Dems will delight at an opportunity to explain why they can’t do anything then have a year and a half long tantrum that the people who they told they couldn’t help didnt stand on line for five hours to vote for the latest ex-air force investment banker the DNC scrapes up.

Seems like a way to maybe get SCOTUS to back off or undo some of the “it’s legal if R’s do it”. In 2029, presuming a trifecta, president makes some unilateral decision. Congress ignores/allows it and seriously starts working on court reform. Pres/DOJ use shadow docket parroting DJT arguments.

Even worse: Harris decided that she'd rather have Trump win than move even an inch to the left

Because they are cowards and/ot fascists who secretly lean right?

Actual answer: - because we want to restore and improve constitutional democracy, not do Trumpism but leftishly - I've yet to see a realistic reparations proposal that would get majority public support, nor have I seen much reparations advocacy that seriously aims for that - M4A is not impossible

Ответ для Fennec Fox Fanfare

Doesn’t matter if the public supports reparations. The IS Government never compensated the descendants of slaves which was supposed to happen after the civil war during reconstruction. The government would be fulfilling its obligation. It hasn’t happened bc Congress is filled with yt supremacists

This country should favor more than two parties.

My answer is that Trump cannot do whatever he wants, and we're living in a period where justice is delayed. But yes, I too want Medicare for all as well as other things that make our society stronger.

No American President has ever faced consequences for their crimes in office.

Because the people on the right have created an INFRASTRUCTURE, that allows trump to do whatever he wants. Republican voters consistently voted in local and national elections to where they have a majority in the courts and a Congress that enables Felon 47.

It's far easier to slash & burn, smash & grab, then it is to build something that is comprehensive and lasting. This person seriously thinks it is easy to do reparations? Have them send their one-page summary on how it will work & satisfy all competing claims. I look forward to their solution.

How about we smash the Republican party and corporate power then?

Because democrats don't want to, that why it's not possible

Just look at what the New York Democratic Party did when Zohran Mamdani won the primary.

Ответ для Eddie Cunningham

You mean the reality or the shit you hallucinated so you feel special?

Ответ для Eddie Cunningham

They backed him as the Dem nominee? What are you talking about?

Ответ для Lucille

I wish they did. Instead, many of them backed the former mayor who ran as an independent. They were more worried about what Mamdani's policies would do to rich Democrats like them than for the rest of the city.

Ответ для Eddie Cunningham

Honey, I live here. Have for my entire life. The party backed the nominee. Some individual dems decided to back Cuomo because they suck.

Ответ для Lucille

The news media may have amplified those individual Dems and make them seem more numerous than they were. They do definitely suck though.

Ответ для Eddie Cunningham

I don't know how anybody other than a racist POS can legitimately believe there is something wrong with a mayor choosing to sit in the nosebleed seats rather than courtside. My only "problem" is that I am worried for Mamdani's safety.

why indeed

Mamdamni has literally been doing this. Senate and house dems just dont want to. Dem governors dont want to.

Because Republicans have a bunch of mindlessly loyal thugs and Democrats don't. Republicans tolerate their leader's hypocrisy, regardless of whether it bears fruit. If leftists want the same, they have to be willing to do the same.

Ответ для herostratus356

If you want Democrats to act like Republicans, then you (yes, YOU 🫵 Mr Random Citizen) need to act like a Republican.

Add SCOTUS seats and remove filibuster. Then all those things are possible. The question is if any particular thing is durable.

Because a large percentage of Americans notoriously vote against their own interests based on propaganda or don't vote at all.

Well…. bsky.app/profile/meta...

Time to wake the fuck up, America. We were played. Hard. @thedemocrats have lied to us for four years. They were in on it, which is why nothing was done to Trump. There is no difference between the two parties. They conspired against us because they know we’re a nation of fucking idiots.

Ответ для Devin

You're certainly one of the fucking idiots.

Ответ для Devin

What a stupid thing to write.

Republicans wielding power involves the following:

Democrats are supposed to care about Democracy. So the next Democrat President will either care about Democracy and not act like a unilateral dictator or they won't give a fuck about Democracy, in which case why would they give a fuck about socializing medicine?

Ответ для Mrs. Stephin Merritt

lol

Ответ для Mrs. Stephin Merritt

You're making the standard mistake most folk do that the U.S. is a bonafide democracy. It is not because electorialism is not democracy but fascism pretending to be. So there's zero incentive for electorial parties like the Democrats to care about a democracy that doesn't actually exist.

Ответ для Mrs. Stephin Merritt

Fuck that. We're in a cultural knife fight with these fuckers and there's no benefit to turning the other cheek. They need to disband the Republican party day 1 and LOCK THEM UP

Ответ для Alt US Wallet Inspector Service

I'll take a woke dictator over 4 years of feckless governance followed by the Tucker Carlson regime

Ответ для Mrs. Stephin Merritt

This is defeatist logic. We will never defeat the right with democracy. We need to drag them into the future kicking and screaming.

If they don't start with Court reform and expansion, they'll achieve nothing.

I kind of think we should just etch a sketch this mess and start over, no loopholes for these fascist freaks. Rights? Inalienable. Taxes go to fully fund social programs and schools before anyone even gets to talk about the military or cops. Clear our debt, bail US out for a change. UGHHH

Other countries replace their constitution every several decades. Ours should've been replaced a long time ago, it's a rag written by and for slave owners.

Trump can't do everything he wants. A lot of things he tried to do got blocked by federal judges. He can't even pass the SAVE act.

because the SCOTUS is majority MAGA

does this person want a D president that also enriches themselves at public expense? because Trump has been much better at that than he has at unilterally changing public policy, where he's actually been struck down all over the place in court

Feels crazy how many people seem to ignore the concept of a swinging pendulum
