to liberals the only hope is that the men with the guns agree to honor the deal and pretend the constitution still binds them. but if too many of those men are on the right and are thus loyal to the sovereign and not the state that's never going to happen.

the moment a sovereign decides to go back on that deal no constitution matters if he can personally command the men with the guns to do what he wants instead of what's written down. the right wants this, the left knows what must be done in this case. liberals wring their hands and fret about norms

power has always come from the ability to use violence to enforce your will, the modern nation state was formed by agreeing that rather than one person commanding that force the broader state would and in return the sovereign would get more buy in from the populace and could command more force.

a core concept of liberalism is that laws and constitutions are in and of themselves binding. that your sovereign, whether president or king, is magically going to be stopped from doing something because a piece of paper says he can't both the left and the right understand this to be a fiction
