Essentially they are making the same choice as in the OP: voting for the party they support even if they aren't enthused about the candidate.

A lot of Trump voters think he's slime, they just hate Democrats a lot.

The problem is that a lot of voters are like that. It doesn't make logical sense, but you can't fight the tide. They won't vote without being enthused for a candidate.
