No, the biggest design failure is the left thumb joystick. It is impossible to play a driving- or racing game with it.

NGL, I've put hundreds of hours into Breath of the Wild and I still cannot get used to the switching of these buttons compared to their counter parts. I wish I at least had the option of button remapping in other games.

Whatever it is, every GAME should go with the 4 directional dot glyph diagram like the Switch UI. Doesn't matter if A or B, you know when it's the south bottom.

Open it up and switch those buttons. Or remap the in software.

I grew up with Nintendo, but now I feel like the Xbox layout is more natural. It's a minor thing, but the confirm button being the one "closest" to me just feels the most correct. Thankfully, I never mix them up, since I know from the feel of the controller I'm currently using.

loathe the Nintendo layout, but what this reminds me of is being a kid with a cheat code book playing GTA San Andreas, and for some reason, the Xbox ver. had significantly more cheats listed (despite all the cheats being in both), so I'd have to translate the black and white buttons in my head

This is exactly my problem with the Switch controller. Not even because I'm that familiar with Xbox. It's because my gaming brain was programmed with the Gamecube controller.

Sorry I'm gonna be that guy but I don't understand how people struggle so much. It's a very simple concept that Nintendo's A and B buttons are swapped from Xbox, and Xbox and Playstation games are mapped pretty much the exact same, just different labels. The bottom button is almost always confirm

Even funnier: Playstation has X on the bottom and gamecube has X to the right. So you can find X in all 4 compass directions.

I have a full Mandela Effect memory of my SNES joypads having the same layout as the Xbox and that Nintendo changed it at some point. I literally just image searched to double check. It’s 100% wrong but my brain refuses to accept it!

I play on a steam deck most of the time and use a wired switch pro controller when playing on the tv with my wee bairn. It’s so disorienting.

I'm sure you know this, but there's a whole history behind the various controllers and how those button arrangements came to be. Evolution always tries to turn things into crabs but sometimes the legs wind up in a different order.

Japanese is read right to left thats why its in that order on Nintendo's controller.

Call me a child but this is literally why I will never buy an Xbox. Whenever my friend brought his over, I had the hardest time figuring out which buttons to press because of my 30+ years of Nintendo muscle-memory. It actually really annoyed him how much trouble it gave me lmao oh well.

As someone who changes between gaming devices often, the names of the face buttons don't frustrate as much as Nintendo being the odd one out having confirm on the right face button and cancel on the bottom face button. Muscle memory = getting this wrong in the heat of the action = frustration.

It's not modern gaming though. Xbox is a continuation of Sega's hardware. So basically on the Master system they did everything opposite of the NES, so the NES is B A and the MS is 1 2 and they continued that reverse idea through, and the Dreamcast has the reverse SNES layout which MS use.

I understand why Nintendo wants the A button to the right, it follows what the original NES pad was like. However, the reason A was A was because it was the 'default' button. The one you should be pressing the most. Which then should become the bottom button in a four button diamond layout.

And of course the barbarity of PlayStation, putting X on the bottom face and doing away with the other letters. Fiends.

I remember hearing somewhere that Nintendo putting B before A is because in Japan they read from right to left.

I bought a Bluetooth controller for my PC that I can’t use because it’s flipped from the way I’m used to and there was no way for me to remap them to how I want 😅

This probably wasn't the reason, but I've always liked to believe the reason Minecraft legacy console edition received a "swap A/B" and "swap X/Y" control option was because of exactly this.

The big issue, though, is I grew up with NES, so I had a lot of SNES time. I cannot tell you the amount of times I've failed QTE that were using XBOX controls.

Its funny that this situation was created by Sony, when mid PS1 generation they decided Western audiences would associate the X rather than the O as the "accept" button and Xbox just followed the trend. But before that it was O, A on SNES, what one would use to accept or go forward on a menu.

I have two Toyotas. On the left side of the steering wheel, they've put a little four-way rocker switch for the stereo to control volume and previous/next track (or whatever is appropriate at the time)....

I'm a weirdo that somehow easily adapts depending on the platform I'm using. 🤷‍♂️ The only time I get tripped up is on my Steam Deck since my brain automatically tries to equate handheld gaming with Nintendo instead of Xbox (yeah, even 4 years later).

If you regularly Switch between a Nintendo console and PC/Xbox it gets a bit weird. It would be better if the positions for confirm back were maintained even if the letter differed.

its fully a japan vs US thing, with Japan refusing to standardize btw. there is a reason pretty nearly every third party PC controller uses xbox layout, its because Microsoft made sure their controllers worked on any device that would let them. and didnt mind if 3rd party used those drivers.

Tell me about it. When I go from Xbox to Switch 2 it takes me a minute to recalibrate my muscle memory.

I love the 8bitdo Pro 3 because the buttons are magnetic and I can switch them around. I’d like to see more controllers do this (and probably figure out how to make the buttons less clacky)
