My job recently introduced AI "tools" for us to use, and keep pushing for us to use them. I have, and it's completely useless shit. When I have the option, I turn the AI off.

If ChatGPT and Claude stopped working tomorrow the world would continue working as it currently does. If, for example, Microsoft Excel stopped working tomorrow it would cause a meltdown. This gives some measure of how important the technology current is.

The *only* time I’ve ever used it was to show a class how soulless and ugly the images it made were. If it went away tomorrow (pretty please), all the time I’d get back from having to play AI detective over my student’s work would go back to where it should be, actually teaching again.

I have never deliberately used AI. Probably never inadvertently but it's hard to be sure. So yes, I could manage. Heavens, I sometimes even go without using my phonebile for days...

I can't for the life of me think of a time where I have consciously use an AI program for anything. I've had the forced Google stuff etc... but never used it for work or in my life. I would not miss it one jot.

I saw a video from a recovering alcoholic. He talked about how he used to buy rounds of drinks all the time. It wasn't generosity. He was trying to get everyone else hammered so he wouldn't feel so guilty and awkward about being sloshed himself. I feel like similar happens with some AI pushers.

I work in the motor trade, selling used car parts. One of our body shop customers uses an online ordering system that uses AI to pick the correct parts for their vehicle. It’s wrong more often than not.

Technically, my job today involves writing an explanation of how the use of AI in homework interferes with learning. So I guess that part of my job would disappear if AI went away, but I'm willing to let it go. Everything else would be so much easier.

This actually raises an interesting skills question. The US military is utterly dependent upon GPS and no longer has the skills to operate in a world without GPS. They no longer supported those skills. Weapons were built depending upon GPS guidance as if that couldn't be jammed.

I don't know, I've made it through 38 years of an IT career without ever using it. It might be a struggle to continue to rely on my own skills and proven competency. 🙄

I have never used any of those on purpose. Google searches show AI first so if it's a very simple question I might. I had a power outage and wanted to know when it would be over. AI wanted to tell me all sorts of interesting facts. The utility co website (6 searches down) gave me the schedule.

Maybe it's a cultural thing but here on Spain, I don't know ANYONE that uses AI in a regular basis to do their job. My husband SOMETIMES use it to coding purposes cause well, he works on IT. But healthcare personal, salesperson, administratives... no one even cares about AI.

My husband is dyslexic and relies on ChatGPT a lot to help him formulate his thoughts including in work emails so he’d miss it but like…he’d still be able to do his job and the world wouldn’t end.

I use one application that uses AI for basic initial graohic design formatting, and I admit it’s kinda helpful. That’s the extent of my use of AI. Wouldn’t miss it.

Since I have not used it for anything other than once looking at what Copilot could do with some data, it wouldn't impact me whatsoever. I will say that Copilot did a nice job of setting up the data to be graphed, much quicker than I could have, but it wasn't anything that I wasnt thinking of doing.

AI is so bad at what I do, I stopped using it soon after giving it a chance. It is good at scraping the internet for information but nothing else.

I have used Claude exactly twice, to see what the fuss was. Once was on my own CV. The second time on a contract for my back deck. Both times the summaries were useful, but not mind-melting. I'll be fine.

The only times I’ve ever “used” it was when it showed up on top of my search results unbidden, before I figured out how to get it to not show up there(*). And then I only used it so far as to maybe have a better idea of where to look for an actual reference.

Speaking as a software engineer, Claude Code is a very useful tool. But I worked without it for decades, so no biggie if it goes away again. The steadily decline in search engine result quality over the past decade has been a bigger pain, tbh.

It's a disability, an actual inability to think without the chatbots, like the way someone who never gets out of a chair becomes weak. The people who market these have a lot to answer for.

AI is for people who's work doesn't matter. for those of us who need to get it right, AI is a hazard to carefully avoid.

This morning, I get why this annoys me so much. Imaginary panic to get us to look away from the real costs. What will people do when historically unprecedented wildfires wipe out their homes year after year? What will people do when unprecedented heat waves kill? We are finding out. Slight of hand.

I know research shows using LLMs impacts cognitive functions, but this guy seems to not remember what was going on five years ago, so it must be a lot worse than what we have been told.

This was their business model. Make the service cheap or free and get everyone hooked then jack the price up when people were too leveraged to give it up. But they had to accelerate the timeline because of the crazy cost. So they’re gaslighting us as if it’s five years from now.

The only gen-AI I use is forced on me in search engine results and crappy AI-chatbots I'm forced to use to get 'customer service'. I am walking away where I can (e.g. not a monopoly like water company) from services who shove AI at me.

The three times a year I need to update and pretty up graphs on a PowerPoint at work with my nonexistent skills would be annoying, but never seeing Sam Altman again would be cool so that’s a win
