I've covered local government meetings for over 20 years, in a city where the mayor notoriously makes up rules to curb anything critical of city hall, especially clapping. So, it's worth a quick🧵 on how governments use rules of decorum to intimidate the public, even to throw opponents in jail.

Somehow or other I managed to see at least some episodes of The Prisoner when it aired as a summer replacement in the US in (IIRC) 1969. I was about 5. (Rover gave me nightmares.) Stuck in my head for years. It was 15 years before I got to see any full episodes. It really does hold up.

The Termite Terrace crew f*ing LOVED tricksters. Bugs was their greatest (sort of a serial collaboration between Tex Avery & Chuck Jones), but Tweety, Road-Runner, Sam Sheepdog, even Daffy & Elmer from time to time were also tricksters. (FTM so was Coyote, he was just cursed at it.)

Also Nolan's great for that kind of national-essentialist just-so-ism because you can just call him British if the claim doesn't work out if he's American.

I could fully buy that NEWS-as-acronym was used in multiple newspapers as an in-joke.

One of my favorite bits of AI satire is Shaenon Garrity (in Skin Horse) coming up with the idea of it emerging from a backronym-generator. (I think she was riffing on Cory Doctorow's idea of AI emerging from spam filters.)

So it's an early example of a proper backronym!

Not enough is written about the fact that in the US, any spiteful lunatic can launch a family-destroying machine at virtually anybody with a single phone call and a few made-up allegations. And a similar machine can be called to launch a heavily-armed murder squad at ANYONE, even those without kids.
