‘British Values’ and ‘Rigour’ (Mortis)

I remember the PSHE based one that was supposed to be worth 2 GCSEs - it was scrapped 2 months before the end of year 11 and my tutor group were *furious*. They’d done all that work, filled out their folders, told they’d get a qualification, took time away from their ‘real’ GCSEs… for nothing.

As I was saying… The problem isn’t the concept of technical qualifications, it’s always how they implement them. They introduce them to schools but never then pave the way further, leading to them being scrapped 2-3 yrs later and no one recognising them. bsky.app/profile/clai...

It’s okay, he admitted recently that he got some things wrong. I mean, he only ruined education for both teachers and students for at least a generation… but he’s sorry, so it’s aaallll okay…

Most annoying thing? They deliberately made it so they don’t translate over neatly. Those first few years were absolute hell when it came to marking… to this day I can still identify a C grade GCSE essay at a glance, but differentiating one to a level 4/5? Not a chance.

It’s fun, isn’t it?! No sauces for them! Unless it’s a curry, then it has better be hotter than the surface of the sun… 😂 (when sensory issues + sensory seeking collide, I guess?) (I can’t speak - my adhd gives me *plenty* of sensory issues of my own - misophonia central!)

Hell, even the new(ish) 1-9 system of grading is still met with abject suspicion. People still ask ‘what’s that? A ‘B’?’ They’d be better off introducing technical GCSE subjects rather than new types of qualifications.

This is what happened in the past. ‘This is worth 3 GCSEs!’. Great. Now try to convince employers that, because they don’t see it that way. They just see someone who only took 4 exams, and they’re picking the candidate who has 8 GCSE passes, because that’s what they understand.

The biggest hurdle? Once these kids get out of school, employers invariably don’t recognise these qualifications. They still want 5+ basic academic GCSEs including Maths and English. They don’t want a ‘TEQ’ (or whatever they’ll call it) in AI.

This can be true, unless your partner is autistic (mine is, and he doesn’t share food due to this - he has a strict order in which food must be consumed and you don’t mess with that. This, however, does not translate in other ways, shall we say. He’s always very polite to wait staff, though! 😂)
