headfallsoff26 июл., 23:29what's everyone else's fab examples of once massively popular and influential landmark titles in especially western games from back in the day that have just been forgotten and abandoned completely now. mine is black and white
headfallsoff26 июл., 23:46the fact that roller coaster tycoon has avoided being this with an active and popular scene to this day and multiple spiritual successors is genuinely crazy. feel like its textbook for being One Of These. but no
Brendan Keogh27 июл., 01:15Replies to this just giving me hope about how deep the IP mines go for Fortnite and television streaming platforms 😇
Shady/Leevi HD Edition 2.8D Remix27 июл., 10:26Just basically google studios that EA or Microsoft bought and you will have nearly 99% of answers.
Microplastics Georg27 июл., 01:34Probably a lot of responses I can give to this but the one that I can think of offhand is Lemmings
When Mom Brings Home The Slop26 июл., 23:34I played the spore DS games as a kid so I just assumed it was a bigger series than it actually was. Creatures was a delightful little game! Hero Arena was kind of ass
A Frogs Gent27 июл., 08:31Do the Might and Magic games count? ...Do the Heroes of Might and Magic games count? Though that's changed recently with the release of Olden Era.
Moth (Comms Open!)26 июл., 23:51heard a guy say he had never heard of Tribes the other day and it gave me a heart attack
...There's Nothing BUT(T) Kobold Here.27 июл., 04:35Might & Magic - Heroes is still getting love every now and again, but I've yet to see anyone recreate the style of True 3D campaign crawler that 6-8 really nailed (we don't talk about MMIX, or I guess X apparently but I never played that one)
Bean J. Bunny27 июл., 15:45Popcap Games. Back in the day everyone had a favorite. Mine was Insane Aquarium, I actually grabbed it on Steam. My mom loved Zumba so much she bought it, in an era where buying digital products was considered insane
Simpsman27 июл., 02:59Nintendogs was one of the first major catalysts to sell people on the concept of the DS, second highest selling title under NSMB, and they only ever tried capitalizing on it once with +Cats on 3DS, and besides some Smash cameos it has pretty much vanished
Damsel Michelle 🏳️⚧️27 июл., 03:29Prototype. Loved that series back in the day. Got 2 games then gone. Absolute tragedy
MCBiohazard27 июл., 03:03I would have said Star Control 2 but they're trying to bring it back with a legit Toys for Bob lineage sequel.
David af Sindmark27 июл., 03:37I think mr Molyneux being revealed as a fraud and liar later on helped kill the reputation of B&W.
Punchy27 июл., 04:30Lemmings. Gotta be lemmings. I have genuinely struggled to convince people born after the year 2000 Lemmings was really popular, if you were not around it is difficult to intuitively grasp that shit wasn't just well-received it was a mega-hit
Flux 🤍🩶💜🖤27 июл., 00:10I'm sure to find more, this is a start Command and Conquer SimCity Ultima Wing Commander Theme Park Dungeon Keeper Dead Space System Shock Twisted Metal Privateer American McGees Alice Magic Carpet Descent Starsiege Tribes Unreal Tournament Master of Orion Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri Kings Quest
dennis ~Wishlist 🎮miniquest~27 июл., 02:45Anything by Popcap. They were getting people's mom's into PC gaming back in like 2003! And then EA just decided to ruin them for nothing. Many such cases
non-orientable genitalia27 июл., 16:18tangential but I keep having encounters with folks who don't know what Penny Arcade is bit wild how PA is probably still bigger than CAD ever was but absolutely everyone knows about CAD because of Loss, while Penny Arcade is "oh is that somehow related to PAX" territory now
knabepicer27 июл., 04:30I was going to make a joke about windows solitaire, but apparently that was still widely played even in 2020, so rip me
Abhorrent Abby27 июл., 01:33King's Quest comes to mind. There was that one modern installment that people enjoyed and then never spoke of again
Dunc The Everything App27 июл., 06:20For obvious reasons it's a good reason this doesn't really come up anymore but the Harry Potter 1 movie game was the 6th best selling PS1 game of all time, more people bought that than MGS, RE2, Any Tomb Raider game. It's only remaining cultural sticking point is a low poly hagrid model
Rocketpunches27 июл., 00:17Resistance wasn't that bit, but it's been so completely abandoned that Sony won't even remaster it. Like... that was a tentpole franchise. Their answer to Halo and Gears, and they just do not give a fuck. You can badly stream the Vita game and the first one, and that's the only place it exists.
Joaquín Padilla Rivero 🀄️27 июл., 21:06Syndicate also comes to mind. In general the notion of having a squad of loosely controlled characters like you do in an RTS was very restricted because of the need to cater to console gaming for which that specific operation was impossible.
Joaquín Padilla Rivero 🀄️27 июл., 20:50Might and Magic, the mainline series. Might and Magic Heroes obviously isn’t forgotten because especially Heroes 3 features in many gamers’ childhoods, but the mainline?
Pyke Redrock27 июл., 04:40Honestly, the death of Black & White dominates this category. Was just an insanely good game.
Ettin27 июл., 05:11For me this is the Creatures series. Nobody's making games where you have to download community-made genomes off the net because the one that shipped with the game gives your creatures terminal Gamer Brain any more
Lena Cole27 июл., 03:35Black and White was so good. I found my CD while moving and I've got to reinstall it someday.
JK-4727 июл., 00:36Remember Actraiser? The one where you basically played as a god, built your civilization up, and would go jump into side-scrolling action to clear more land for your civilization? That game fueled a lot of my early-onset megalomania
God Emperor Paul27 июл., 04:46Master of Orion? I've put...idk how many thousands of hours into 2. 3 was probably really damn good, but it added so many layers i wasn't ready for. But i'm a sucker for turn based games so......i'm always biased. (I did love Black & white)
The Pumpkin Dipshit27 июл., 16:38My boring answer is the entire Real Time Strategy genre. A whole gaming powerhouse, responsible for a huge amount of early growth in PC gaming, just... Instantly consigned to the retro/remake/mobile bin, all at once. Sure, we still remember Command & Conquer and the Crafts, but the genre died.
JuniperTheory is gay27 июл., 02:10there's a lot of great really old answers here so I think I'll go a little newer and say that I knew some ppl who played PC games, some people who had consoles but EVERYBODY played shitty flash games on the school computer or whatnot and that shit is fuckin GONE.
Xenobrina27 июл., 05:17Mobile games from like 2009 - 2012. They created a whole new platform for developers with huge reach, but the market shifted so hard towards timers and gacha that games like Doodle Jump or Where's My Water feel like a whole different era.
Strangled By Priest Entrails26 июл., 23:52I can't be worse than the Myst-denial guy now so I will pretend every first-person entry is Something Different and say Fallout.
TallGuyWithAHoodie27 июл., 06:12Remember when Twisted Metal was like camp and funny and arcadey and explicitly magical and not grim dark?
Aaaac27 июл., 06:58Monkey Island, and to a lesser extent the LucasArts puzzle games. Used to be everyone knew them, and there was a whole genre of imitators. Now since they are so "cheap" to make, the genre is so flooded nothing stands out.
Gavin Lucan27 июл., 15:42X-Wing and TIE Fighter. The fact there isn't modern gen versions in the prequel/sequel eras is a damn crime. (And not, Squadrons doesn't count. It was a nice attempt, but needed more)Star Wars X-wing and TIE FighterALT: Star Wars X-wing and TIE Fighterstatic.klipy.com
Ed Pichon27 июл., 04:00The Wipeout games. They got some PS4 VR love…but I’ll always play more. WipeoutXL saved my life in college.
EvieSigma27 июл., 02:53Ultima was THE Western PC RPG before Elder Scrolls and Diablo but then EA murdered it.
Karnak, Indexed Word Monster27 июл., 05:00100%. I have the DVD of Black and White 2 in a sealed case. I have a portable DvD R/RW. Just so I can always play this game.
ctg86727 июл., 17:14Gotta be Unreal, right? There's still the engine ofc but that series was hugely importantly to the growth of competitive MP and online shooters before Epic killed it. And i guess Quake would count for the same reason. Am i allowed to say Half Life? Lol
Chris Klinske27 июл., 06:05The fact that Sid Meier's Pirates doesn't have a meaningful successor is bonkers. There are multiplayer pirating games, and a few games featuring pirates without it being the specific purpose of the game (Black Flag is included here) but nothing really takes up the same niche.
Patryk of the Sleeper Tribe27 июл., 03:41Hmm, I'd say FEAR, then again it wasn't "massively" popular. But it was talked about a lot and now is completely dead.
nikki 🐁27 июл., 00:56Oddworld went from trying to make a pentology of mainline stories and an entire gaming cinematic universe to Soulstorm being one of the most mid rated games the year it came out despite having a 5+ year development after a very successful reboot/remake
A Bluesky Name27 июл., 03:11The ubiquity of flight sims until at least the late 90s. Stuff like Falcon 3.0 going from "Despite being several years old, it's still in the top 5 games of all time" in the late 90s to not even being in the discussion 10 years later. (Related to that: the Microprose Grand Prix series.)
D W the Gutless27 июл., 00:48Oh you know what? I just got a Steam Machine and on the desktop mode one of the recommended games to install on the os was Space Cadet pinball. Those folks know what's up.
Leobardo27 июл., 10:26Maybe I'm inflating it's importance but descent/forsaken where incredible and quickly given up on in favor of simpler fpss I think lemmings also was pretty incredible but today it's basically forgotten, at least from what I know Dungeon Keeper comes to mind too
Amelia Carhartt27 июл., 09:42Starcraft for sure. Like yes technically there is still a competitive scene for it but it feels like it's completely gone from the wider collective consciousness. And that whole genre has been almost completely subsumed by MOBAs
