I certainly have sympathy for not knowing if the author of the source you read directly used AI, and even some for using AI as a search engine! But none whatsoever for an author who used AI themself in the writing process, as happened in the shared screenshot.

It's just an absurd framing. "Lots of writers now only do the actual work that should be the bare minimum expectation of any writer."

"This author used generative AI and it introduced inaccuracies into his writing. Society cannot return from this."

Surely the solution here is just *don't use AI tools* for your writing and research and continue to do your writing and research in ALL the ways you were doing it before you started using AI instead of doing the work??

Absolutely! It's this real ahistoricity that really frustrates me. Yeah it might be a new level of complexity but it is still just software made by humans. We don't need to reinvent any conceptual wheels here to understand what is going on or who is responsible.

Even then, we could still avoid personifying it? Someone designing a software system badly and it accessing data it should not have accessed has happened before!

I dunno. I feel like we should wait for literally any evidence from anyone except stakeholders with a commercial stake in all of us thinking genAI is capable of doing this before we get too excited about genAI supposedly doing this.
