That's just it, they're *niche*. You rarely see generalist game media discussing them at all though, much less rate them amongst the very best games of a particular year. This was much less true until post-2000.

The Starcraft experience to be more common than a game getting completely lost. It lives on as a niche scene, possibly bigger than ever in raw numbers. But the fact it once had widespread appeal is lost.

The ubiquity of flight sims until at least the late 90s. Stuff like Falcon 3.0 going from "Despite being several years old, it's still in the top 5 games of all time" in the late 90s to not even being in the discussion 10 years later. (Related to that: the Microprose Grand Prix series.)

To be fair, I think the significance of FF7 is lost on a lot of people who weren't around for it too. The degree to which it was a step up, and the crossover appeal of it anyway. Particularly in PAL-land, which never got any previous Final Fantasies (or Chrono Trigger)

IMHO this all stems from the term "AAA" just showing up one day and games' general reaction being: "Well I've never heard this before, but it's corporate branding so I have to accept it as valid and reshape my entire worldview to accommodate its existence."
