No but fr, I've been bringing this up for years every time the "if you adjust for inflation video games should be X dollars" discourse starts. Kids used to rent games! We also had used games and greatest hits and sharing with your friends and putting a quarter into an arcade machine etc etc

Great feature on a thing i generally understood to be true about east asian corporate hostility to the journalistic process but pretty wild to see it articulated like this (also something that seems to be true in much of the gaming space, not just w/ anime studios)

Breaking bad had just finished, i was working my way through the final season, and w/o warning a mutual friend at my apartment starts a conversation by saying "so i can't believe X dies". Just killed all the tension of that scene the first time i watched it and I'll forever be mad about this lol 1/

I think everything you've said here is correct. I'm also skeptical we'll ever see that change so my solution is going to be buying fewer games while leaning more on my backlog (and piracy, tbh)

Just realized that Thief and Deus Ex both count for this, and that really hurts 😭 Ubi says they're doing a new Splinter Cell but I'm doubtful. If you know ball, Riddick was super important in terms of its design and engine work. Socom was *huge* for the early console online space.

And i guess Portal is a more serious answer than Half Life would be. Left 4 Dead too tbh. EA managed to kill both Burnout *and* Need for Speed, somehow. Rock Band and Guitar Hero? They just did the those 2 remasters but it seems Tony Hawk is dead again, as well.

Gotta be Unreal, right? There's still the engine ofc but that series was hugely importantly to the growth of competitive MP and online shooters before Epic killed it. And i guess Quake would count for the same reason. Am i allowed to say Half Life? Lol

It's specifically the misleading attack "glint" that's annoying. You spend hours teaching a player that it works one way and now you're throwing that out for the moment where they're supposed to be executing on the skills they've developed to that point. Just not a fan of that

Foolish to expect this guy to burn a bridge with a publisher he wants to maintain a relationship with (or similarly, criticize other directors under xbox who didn't lead production on good enough titles to make game pass viable), but, well, yea. Those were your problems.

The Oni. The game tries to have it both ways in that it gives you this system where an audio visual indicator signals an attack but then it breaks that logic for boss fights as a way to artificially make them more difficult. I like the game but find that element to be really poorly designed.

A random combination of unblockable attacks with random parry timing windows randomly followed by unparryable attacks and even more random disarming attacks. Yea I'm not tryna spend hours banging my head against a wall on this. This is fucking miserable.

Games that give you some kind of audio visual indicator that an unblockable attack is coming but it happens so far ahead of the attack that it isn't just functionally useless but actually makes it harder to parry or evade. (This is me complaining about ghost of yotei boss fight design #blutoid)
