Coherence really is the key word. I'm still not a fan of him in general, but here he found a vessel to express everything he wants to express. I'm thinking about putting my thoughts into a blog post so it's not a rambling stream of conciousness for people, if they care about my opinions.

Nolan also still has the intellectual depth of a high schooler but idk. It felt, to me, like all of his ideas and themes cohered here where it's been scattershot attempts before.

Nolan still doesn't know how to shoot actors but at least, I think, Anne Hathaway has learned how to work within Nolan's way of shooting.

The reason I sorta like Tenet is that it doesn't care about its story, it's just scifi mumbojumbo. The reason I hate Oppenheimer is bc it doesn't have any pacing, every scene no matter what it's about is emphazised equally, and it cuts the committed performance of Cillian Murphy to bits.

It has all the ticks I usually don't like but they cohered into a story this time. My main criticism is that he's not a good visual storyteller, replacing it with bombast, but here the story and the style worked together.

I, a certified Nolan hater, loved The Odyssey.

Haven't watched all of EVA since then - that's more than 20 years ago now - and I still have certain images burned into my brain.

Akira, ín my humble opinion, is the best animated film of all time. Watching EVA at 13 was certainly a choice as well.
