Last vox pop I recall was a woman from Wales ( back in May) was in favour of Farage (give someone new a chance) because of "Labour's poor performance dealing with COVID.." BBC did not think to question her logic. Just accepted the stream of semi-consciousness on the nose. Tragic.

Need a definition of class based on the means of transportation rather than the means of production.

A lot depends on whether you have a decent bus service in your area. I live in a rural area. The bus service is poor & mostly doesn't go where I need to be when I need to be there, so I drive. I am already aware that I get zero sympathy for this, but rural poverty & access to facilities is a thing.

Been said before but it is worth repeating: you don’t have to drive everywhere, although I accept that a lot of rural areas aren’t well served by public transport.

Free child care is all very well and good but I don't have any kids so what's the fucking point. Once again politicians prove how removed from reality they really are.

It makes sense if your view of "the working class" is people whose jobs require transporting a moderate quantity of stuff around, or irregular trips that don't map to the bus network: electricians, plumbers, HVAC techs, appliance repairers, home health aides, cleaners, couriers, etc.

There are a lot of places where buses won't get you where you need to be. Sadly when I was in Durham in the 90s the bus service was leagues ahead of the service where I grew up, sounds like it no longer is from some comments here. It's more than just prices needed to make buses available to many.

The quoted text here is misleading. In the full comment he contrasts people who drive to work with bus users, whom he identifies as students and the elderly. It's not crazy to think that in Durham that makes bus users skew middle class.

The reason I don't use the bus is because where I live the buses are shite. If I lived in London or even in Glasgow it would be an entirely different matter.

Class identification can be many things. 1. Emotional 2. In this case a protection 3. Identity and belonging 4. Defence and justification 5. Protective of certain privileges and hidden statuses 6. Much more rarely a tool in social science or logical
