Any Burnham says he will stick to "the existing fiscal rules". Rules which neutered the state & delivered Potholed roads PFI infrastructure Huge NHS queues Privatisations Poverty Deindustrialisation Lower healthy life expectancy Low investment in productive assets and low productivity Must change.

Andy Burnham can’t transform the country while sticking to the current fiscal rulesSticking to the 2024 election manifesto and fiscal rules will make it harder for him to deliver the headline promises and the change that he has paraded.leftfootforward.org

Andy Burnham can’t transform the country while sticking to the current fiscal rules, which are not accompanied by social targets Sticking to the 2024 Labour election manifesto and fiscal rules will make it harder for him to deliver the headline promises. Something will have to give.

If true, we get 3 things. None good. 1. The direct negative growth/fiscal impacts of cutting immigration. 2. A Chancellor who prioritises their own personal/ideological obsessions over the UK economy. 3. A PM who through myopia or weakness chooses 1 and 2.

Adam Bienkov

The Times reporting that Andy Burnham succeeded in persuading Shabana Mahmood to become Chancellor because it would give her more control over cutting immigration
