Crisis, what crisis? It was the hot summer of ‘76, Jaws was in the cinema & Chancellor Healey was feeling the heat. Superb @cssjournal.bsky.social piece by the fab Sunday Times econ editor @dsmitheconomics.bsky.social on the IMF crisis revisited. Free-to-view! www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

1/2 This and similar incidents should be called out for what it is. A Home Office official manufactured country information to refuse an asylum case. Some lawyers have been doing the same to try to win their cases. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...
The biggest difficulty for trans rights – the general public seems to believe the new guidance makes it possible to exclude eg trans women from women's services in some circumstances. No. This was the previous position. The current guidance requires their exclusion, always, regardless of context.
I see Philp is attempting to distract from being caught out in his lies by claiming that he is at war with France .. 😉 bsky.app/profile/jame...
James ChalmersThis is a very odd story but I find it difficult to jump to the conclusion that the French navy has decided it should try to scare the Shadow Home Secretary away from talking about small boats. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
"A liberal and flexible system towards economic migration routes is likely to produce better results overall than one whose primary aim is to limit eligibility to a very narrow set of potential migrants." ✍️ @jdportes.bsky.social on selective migration systems 🔗 ukandeu.ac.uk/the-paradox-...
Chris Philp (Shadow Home Secretary) has now, finally, deleted this video. It contained a number of (obviously) false claims based on his "research" which (deliberately or through incompetence) misinterpreted Home Office visa data. x.com/CPhilpOffici...

Jonathan PortesThe Times corrects its splash story headlined "Migrant care workers bring dozens of family members." The Times got this totally wrong. It then used its own error as the basis for an editorial calling explicitly for forced expulsions of people living here legally. www.thetimes.com/comment/regi...

Andy Burnham says he wants to end rough sleeping, how difficult will that be & what approach should he take? It’s a subject I’ve been writing about for years in Liverpool & the city provides a good test case for the scale of the problem and what’s needed A long but hopefully useful thread 🧵
If the concern is population growth, net migration may be a useful measure. If the concern is “control”, it is less useful. And if the concern is that white people are being replaced as non-white migrants arrive, net migration is the wrong statistic altogether. Analysis by Jonathan Portes.

Summer of ‘76: Jaws was in the cinema & Chancellor Healey was feeling the heat. Grrat @cssjournal.bsky.social piece by brilliant Sunday Times econ editor @dsmitheconomics.bsky.social on the IMF crisis revisited. Free-view coming soon. @acadsocsciences.bsky.social www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
Burnham hinting a similar position to that voiced by Starmer (and which Home Office is working up) on needing to rebalance A couple of big risks in sheer complexity of the often misunderstood proposals If they think exempting NHS/care visa fixes it, then 250k other people could lose legal status
I see Chris Philp still has this up. Lies from start to finish x.com/CPhilpOffici...
