i think a lot of well-meaning people fall into a rhetorical trap where they take the bait and argue about male vs. female performance in sports rather than arguing for the value and dignity of women’s athletics generally. don’t let yourself be dragged into a bad faith framing.

Peter

the best HS teams in the country have multiple guys who will be in the NBA in a couple of years. they aren't normal high schools, they're basketball factories. but this literally doesn't matter. the value of women's sports isn't contingent on their performance vis a vis men.

People also tend to treat school/children’s sports as professional sports for children when for 99.9% of kids it’s just something fun to do where you can make friends and be active.

I would love to see the US men’s olympic swim team compete against juvenile great white sharks.

Ответ для DGM

I think it might be a win for the men's team, sharks can't swim in regulation Olympic swimming pools because of all the chlorine.

Even if men and women were on average exactly equally good at a given sport the massive funding and visibility advantages men’s sports have mean that their much larger talent pool would lead to stronger men’s teams Like I straight up do not believe men are inherently better at darts or chess etc

Ответ для matrixschmatrix

Also the opportunities for training. A girl could be genetically predisposed to be an elite baseball player, but if there isn’t a travel team for her to play on + compete against top-tier players, she’s not going to get the development opportunities that boys do.

Ответ для matrixschmatrix

this is the exact thing i'm talking about though. we don't need to spend our time providing various justifications for performance gaps between men and women.

Ответ для Peter

Visualize the argument leaving your post. 😮‍💨

Yep. The correct answer is, "who gives a shit?" Women's sports might not be identical in form to men's, but if you like sports they are every bit as fun and cool and entertaining.

Ответ для Keith

Come to think of it, the correct answer to most things conservatives say is, "Who gives a shit and you're a weirdo for thinking/caring about that."

The framing of most things is bad faith! This is exactly what we should do! If sport is only valuable due to the who is ‘the winner’ sport would be impossible? Rather there are people who are good players and make games exciting. It cannot be ‘only the best team matters.’ That makes no sense.

I just get annoyed at people who say things like "womens leagues exist because men don't like losing to women". You don't have to do that. You can just enjoy womens sports on their own merit. They're a lot of fun.

The analogy I always draw is the merit between lightweight and heavyweight boxers. Different styles of play, same level of skill involved.

Don't let yourself be dragged into bad faith framing has to be the slogan for woke 2.0

That said, you have to have a vocabulary to talk about the effects of HRT because you need to be able to show your work that trans women on HRT are female. The question that hangs over all of this is Thomas' concurrence in WV v BPJ. It's about the mutability of sex.

It’s a trap, just like “women aren’t funny”.

These same people trying to provoke this argument love college football whose greatest teams would get steamrolled by the 08 lions. It’s ok to like watching sports that aren’t only the world’s best players.

One of the reasons they choose sports is becasue it really makes no sense. Like a guy runs faster than you and you're just supposed to say that makes him more of a sports expert than you?

Everybody should read carefully the @anthonymoser.com article on "Kirby framing" before responding to bad faith debate questions that pop up on here.

The men vs women argument always feels like "my dad could beat up your dad" which is the realm of middle schoolers and therefore beneath us

Why is any sport contingent on performance? When I fenced, I competed in open events and practiced with guys. I won some, lost more but it was fun. I'm now the old fat lady at the group bike ride. It's social and fitness. The problem is people now "compete" in sports and no longer "play" sports.

Ответ для Sock Puppet Pundit

The fixation with accomplishment and performance scared off those new to sports and those who are never more than average. Add social media mocking average people (especially women) being average. Everyone is afraid to play. Win or stay home. The goal is to get girls and women to stay home.

Ответ для Sock Puppet Pundit

I think it's because of the commodification of sports. People pay millions to assemble teams of good contestants for football, other football, basketball and more, and they can make their money back tenfold if that team wins a whole bunch. A lot of people see sport as a market first and foremost.

Ответ для Cool skeleton

The chances of making money are slim. It's like social media, crypto, prediction markets, etc. Everyone is going to get rich because everyone is special. But the people getting rich already had money to lose. It doesn't take much money to play sports. It takes money to compete in sports.

Ответ для Sock Puppet Pundit

Thinking about it, commodification is competing. Making money is winning. To make money you have to win. But to win, you have to spend money. It goes back to playing because you enjoy the game or competing for a reward.

Ответ для Sock Puppet Pundit

I didn’t mean gambling on sports, I meant the fact that people with hefty starting capital, who’ve never played a match of any sport, could sign a band of passionate, talented players of the sport and compete, and then leverage the fame to make a fortune from sponsorships and endorsements.

Ответ для Cool skeleton

I'm talking about spending money in an attempt to make money on a slim chance endeavour. Some call it investing. Some call it gambling. I imagine a lot of parents call sports investments hoping their kids will benefit.

THIS.

but even in the context of the bad faith framing, we are talking about the outliers of human performance where the bell curves of performance don't overlap; no single person pushing this understands the laws of large numbers let alone exists in that statistical area of exceptional performance

I think we should talk about the value of publically funded sports in general. I value it for 2 reasons, to teach people sportsmanship, and get some excercise. Good sportsmanship is inclusive, and bad sportsmanship creates uncivl people imo

Ответ для kingtha

Anything else is a matter for private markets, and state regulation should stay out of it imo

"The purpose of sports is to train the people I watch on TV" vs "the purpose of sports is to have fun playing sports"

so conceding their point was how you didn't fall for the trap? bsky.app/profile/nota...

it's interesting how many men get satisfaction out of knowing that other men can beat elite female athletes. like ok, maybe the best high school boys team in the country can beat a WNBA team, but YOU can't

Watching F1 spending the entire time bragging about airplanes

People should care about professional sports 90% less and rec leagues that they could join 1000% more. The debate does not matter. It doesn't affect real people. Everyone should play more sports.

If you think women’s sports has value and dignity then why would you not want to ensure it’s protected for women? Seems a bizarre take. If you don’t say it’s only for women it’s not, by definition, women’s sport any more.

Ответ для Iain Fletcher

Good thing trans women are women, then.

Ответ для Iain Fletcher

If you think women's sports has value and dignity, then shouldn't I, as a man, have a say in how they play their sports?

Ответ для Iain Fletcher

Explain the dignity in forcing a 3rd grader to "prove" their gender. or anyone who doesn't look like who you think a woman should look

Ответ для Iain Fletcher

Take a look at the comment section on nearly any photo of a female athlete who doesn't look "feminine." It's full of people (mostly men) claiming that she's not a real woman, or examining her crotch to see if it's suitably flat. These are the people who are protecting "dignity"?

I don't think most non-athletes understand how much of physical advantage males have in sports... I played college basketball, and in high-school, my AAA team was challenged to a game by the top Canadian women's university team. I thought we would probably lose, but we beat them and it wasn't close

Ответ для Lane Hutson Enjoyer

In hindsight, of course we won, I was 6'9 at 16, even the tallest women players were 5 or 6 inches shorter. It's not a value judgement, that team was the best female team in the country, losing to high schoolers doesn't take from their quality at all, it's just two different things.

Ответ для Lane Hutson Enjoyer

But there's also a difference between a AAA high school team and a random guy on the street. And random guys on the street are saying, "Those high school boys could beat women, and that means I could beat a WNBA player, because I'm a man."

Ответ для Callalily

Also, I don't know if it was different then (or if it's different in different sports), but at least in hockey, the top Canadian girls almost all get recruited to US colleges. If you look at the PWHL draft, there are very few coming from Canadian colleges--the Canadian players were on US NCAA teams.

Ответ для Callalily

And separating it into discrete skills makes things interesting. The Ottawa Charge and Sens players who weren't at the Olympics had a skills competition, and the men won for speed, but they were pretty even on most of the others. And Rebecca Leslie won shot accuracy. www.youtube.com/shorts/wWq6H...

TWELVE SECONDS INTO OT 🔥 Ottawa’s Rebecca Leslie locks in the win in Winnipeg! #pwhlYouTube video by The PWHLwww.youtube.com

No one ever considers that women actually bring different skills that make the sport functionally different. Watch wnba and you’ll see no-look passes, ball movement, and blocks that are different from the nba (and more entertaining). Its why womens figure skating has less falls and better execution

Ответ для Moksha

I think most of this is the effect of cultural transmission and the growth of what we'd call discipline subcultures in academia: you learn a play style from the people who teach you (and in this case the WNBA play style is just straightforwardly more fun to watch)

Ответ для Val Syverson 🕷️

I think thats true, but i also think that comparing male athletes to female athletes always defaults to male skills, no one consider that women arent deficient men and actually have a completely different style of play

Ответ для Moksha

I agree with that, to be clear! I'm just saying I don't think the differences in play style here are inherent to the players being women or men, I think they're culturally transmitted.

Ответ для Val Syverson 🕷️

Haha no prob I was trying to expand on what I meant not disagreeing

Ответ для Moksha

Gymnastics is a good comparison. Men's gymnastics is largely focused on upper body strength (rings, pommel horse) whereas women's gymnastics combines strength, flexibility, and balance. Same sport, different body types, means different specialization.

Ответ для Moksha

I would be honestly interested if you removed the gender restriction¹ from, say, soccer, whether the best teams wouldn't have a mix of men and women, with different specialties. ¹: and a whole lot of social bullshit

the right wants to bait you into an argument that you don't need to have and that you will probably lose. it's important to recall what your principles are rather than just negatively polarize against whatever they're spewing

Ответ для Peter

The simultaneous insistence that women’s sports are lame and dumb, but also that they are the defenders of it. Bad faith sophistry from the worst people alive.

Ответ для whippet enjoyer

They just want a social license to call some group of people faggots like it’s 1997, and they can’t do that to plain old gay people any more so here we are.

Ответ для whippet enjoyer

They have a naive zeal to keep the sport “nice & safe” so that girls are protected—their idealized notion of girls. Someone on sports radio today said that white male America followed Caitlin Clark onto a WNBA court & were shocked to discover it’s practically a cage match out there on the floor.

Ответ для Dreamboat Annie

You can sometimes break their brains by asking if they think that Dylan Mulvaney could beat Caitlin Clark in a one-on-one game.

Ответ для Peter

found all these weird little guys taking pokes about pitch speeds in the comments on a video from the WPBL. Which doesn't actually mean what they think it means -- at least, some knuckleballers would like to have words with them I assume.

Ответ для Greatest American Hero

Yeah -- the comments on this are a perfect example. Everyone talking about how her pitching speed is "so slow," and ignoring that the batter struck out, which is the actual goal here. www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvqO...

Kelsie Whitmore strikes out Trey MartinYouTube video by Too Hot Baseballwww.youtube.com
Ответ для Peter

This is both true for most every issue you could debate with the right, and also requires a lot of personal discipline (particularly in the social media quick take era).

Ответ для Peter

I think that because specious arguments about biological differences have been employed so much to deny women opportunities there is a tendency to reflexively argue against them even in the small minority of cases (like elite athletics) when there really are significant differences.

Ответ для Fyodor

I also just don’t really buy that the athletic performance of cis males and trans females can be treated interchangeably the way these arguments tend to

Ответ для Erin

I mean they obviously can't. I don't know that this argument is primarily focused on transgender athletes. The original post was some shock jock gloating about how a high school boy state championship team could beat the WNBA champions.

Ответ для Fyodor

Oh that’s fair, but I think Travis is using it bc to him it proves a point about the trans aspect too. But clay travis is also not very smart so

Ответ для Erin

I think that the post was right after the WNBA championship last year and he didn't like that it got a lot of attention and wanted to crap on them.

Ответ для Fyodor

Ahhhh I saw it for the first time a couple days ago so assumed it was current, more fool me

Ответ для Erin

Indeed if Tray's challenge were meant as an attack on trans women in sports, then the high school boys' team should first be taking HRT for a while before the game

Ответ для Peter

Every college football team would lose to every NFL team. People still love college football!

The only responsible attitude for liberals and progressives to align on is that all right-wing grievances, claims and believes are not only false, but malicious lies. Nothing passes the mouth of an American conservative in public life that is not meant to harm and destroy the lives of millions.

Covino & Rich radio show y’day: they say they agree w/Sophie Cunningham’s comments & can’t see what all the fuss is about. Then they quote her exact words. It wasn’t terrible until she threw in the phrase “my morals”. Now I can’t decide: are they dumb or just pretending they don’t get the offense?

This is what all social reactionary arguments boil down to. Trans panic? Eugeneics. Birth rate? Eugenics. Immigration? Eugenics (with bonus slave labor and racism).
