if they say something and you say that's not true, your response is still shaped like their frame Your frame has to *contain and explain* their frame, not just contradict it. You have to eat their frame. Like Kirby

tbh if a rich person says anything assume it's for an agenda fuck the rich

This reads like a speech and debate structure from High School, which is to say extremely helpful and honestly delightful, thanks

Get their ass'

Hell yeah

This looks like you’re saying “negating their frame reinforces it” is wrong, which you aren’t, but the meme is confusing

One of my biggest problems with Instagram is that it incentivises posts like the wrong example.

this is *phenomenal* and i am stealing it for immediate use in an honors undergrad class where i am struggling to teach media literacy/critical thinking along with the actual subject matter. i promise to cite you!

Love this. Could you apply it to the recent moves against SSRIs in pregnancy and paracetamol in pregnancy/autism?

Ответ для Clearyb

frame: SSRIs are bad during pregnancy negation: no actually studies have found on the whole that etc kirby: they want to control people's bodies, especially pregnant people, which is why they're saying this

Neat. I realized that I have been doing something similar, only wordier. I go "You're not engaging in good faith debate. Your agenda is X."

yes yes yes!! The stock swings are a big part of Trump’s strategy since he’s taken off, they’re making money for a lot of the investor class while screwing over everyone else’s ability to have a stable business.

Ответ для Alex Hanna

Glad it helps! I find people who are used to engaging in good faith often have a hard time with bad faith arguments/actors

Best way i've heard it explained is: "your reply of how productive Neurodivergent people can be still implies it's okay to get rid of the non-productive ones"

When people say '_______ is bad', I tend to respond with something along the lines of, "Please define bad." If it's something I strongly disagree with them on, it tends to be, "What do you believe is the purpose of the Universe?" Which leads to my definition of 'bad' from first principles. When (c)

Ответ для Tynach

… it's something that most people agree is bad but there's some nuance to it, I tend to tell them that I agree with them theoretically, but that there's nuance, and to fully show that we need to analyze what 'bad' means first.

Ответ для Tynach

But when it's something I have no opinion or am undecided on, I'll often just straight up ask them 'bad in what way?' Usually with clarification that I'm neutral or haven't decided on my own stance, and want to know more about their own.

Lmao it certainly refocuses things on his motives. She's not wrong Depending on what you want the conversation to be about it may be a little narrow. He's a monstrous individual, but I tend to think the vacuous nature of billionaires is more effect than cause

Ответ для Anthony Moser

I usually try to reframe around the core proposition that money acts like mass: drawn to itself innately, and not a reflection of whether people deserve it; dangerous like a black hole when too concentrated

Anthony Moser

This is why it's useful to think of money as mass, following the rules of gravity. Money pulls money. People who have a lot of money think they should get to keep it. If somebody has a lot of money and *doesn't* think they should get to keep it? THEY WON'T HAVE A LOT OF MONEY ANY MORE

Ответ для Anthony Moser

Oh fascinating. And the more money someone makes, I have to imagine that deep down they sense the growing disconnect between it and what they do to earn it, driving insecurity about their wealth and fueling their hunger for more.

Ответ для LastThird

yeah there's i think a need for rationalizing that feeds the narrative of personal exceptionalism, with an obvious incentive for people around you to agree

Ответ для Anthony Moser

I'm going back and relistening to interviews I heard recently... It's driving me nuts that I can't remember who it was who made the observation that most billionaires got that way through some longshot bet that they shouldn't have won, but did. How that experience broke their brains.

Ответ для LastThird

Also you can be rich and hard working. the mistake is thinking the second thing caused the first

Ответ для Anthony Moser

I would say that it *can*, but it would be a mistake to assume that it inevitably does. But even in cases where it does, that relationship fades in importance the richer you get. I don't know where the threshold is where it disappears altogether, but I have no doubt that it exists.

Ответ для LastThird

I think it can be safely said that it is sometimes necessary but never sufficient

Ответ для Anthony Moser

Oh totally, I'm mostly just goofing around here. I had to sorta pick a lane, for character limit and simplicity's sakes. But as for souls: whatever they may be, I think it's at least possible that they're susceptible to effects. Which is to say I agree with you, but that all that $ broke Musk's.

I bookmarked this a couple days ago, because -- while I can see it in use in your examples -- I'm still struggling to wrap my head around how to apply it. And I think it's important to be able to, so I'm gonna keep working at it.

Ответ для LastThird

One thing I should maybe clarify: this is primarily a way of putting bad faith arguments in context *for people who are not the ones making those arguments* It's a way to help others correctly perceive what is happening, not a tool for persuading liars

Ответ для Anthony Moser

That makes sense. I imagine in a one-on-one interaction, a bad faith arguer would balk at having their frame exposed as such.

I LOVE this so much

So, why don’t Dems go full Kirby in 2026 and repeat, in their outside voices: Republicans are weirdos whose policies are inherently racist and corrupt. They are pedo predators who kill the vulnerable to prop up failsons and couch fuckers. We have receipts going back to, at least, Dennis Hastert.

Ответ для Hamgravy

you know why, because Democrats benefit from having this argument going on as most of them have more in common with Republican senators than regular people… Congress is not on our side, although politicians at the lower levels may be

Sad to say that historical consciousness of the first half of the 20th century has so diminished for many that it can no longer be counted on to simply invoke the history of eugenics to discredit eugenic activities that have regained an appeal strongest among cultural elites and the cult of fitness.

This is why philosophy isn't useless.

I still don't know what Kirby is, though 😄

Ответ для Anthony Moser

A point you brought up in this is that the people with bad faith arguments are not your audience - absolutely correct. We've been trying to tell people who "feed the trolls" by telling them why they're fucked up, rather than that they're wrong, is important.

Ответ для ✨🩷beep boop mew🩷✨

Not because they'll listen - because you're arguing for the benefit of the real audience, neutral people reading your arguments. You give the shitty view power by addressing it on its own terms. You teach the lesson by explaining the core problems with the argument to the third party.

Ответ для ✨🩷beep boop mew🩷✨

"you're not arguing for the troll, you're arguing for the audience" is something we've been trying to explain for so long. This is a much better and more fun way of explaining that and we appreciate it!

The point is to shift the focus from the message to who's saying it and why

i made a template you can use to think about what "frame/negation/kirby" looks like for other issues. For example: Frame: DOGE is a govt efficiency project to save $ Negation: Actually it made things less efficient and cost $ Kirby: DOGE was a project to break and privatize federal bureaucracy

Sometimes you can bring them to it by asking frame-breaking questions e.g. “Do you think it’s okay that the government is taking away food from hungry people?” “Why do you think they want us to focus on whether hungry people on SNAP are Black or not, and not why they’re refusing to feed them?”

Calling vax denial eugenics or white supremacy hurts their feelings. Bigly.

Honestly, I would pin this to my own feed. It’s the best.

I

If it were up to me, I'd fire and muzzle every other Democratic strategist and pay you their COMBINED salaries if you would just teach Democratic politicians to talk like this. Brilliant!

It’d be more helpful if those same grifters weren’t encouraging the hipsters to jingo a “they’re doing eugenics” every time a stabalizing population was called a “collapsing” population.

To stretch the metaphor, once Kirby has eaten the frame, he has two options: swallow it and become what he's fighting (accept the frame) or spit it out as ammunition (reject the frame)

WOW thank you, this really helps AND korbey

Correct: productivity is not required to count as a human and being entitled to basic human rights. It's tempting to point to autistic people who are "productive" but that framing implies the existence of "useless eaters." By trying to use their framing against them you legitimise it.

Yeah, by satirizing things or even negating them we are in that process invoking them

This image is so confusing to me

The instinct/impulse is to follow the framing cause it's, like, polite, but yeah some points are just flat-out wrong and mean and should NOT prompt a polite response. Some talking points NEED to get 0 grace so that reasonable people who don't know how to do research don't fall into believing them

Ответ для Ember

i think there's also a very natural impulse to be like "wait THAT's not true and THAT's not true" and want to disprove all the lies but you have to let go of that and instead make them and what they are doing the subject of the discussion

Ответ для Anthony Moser

Yeah lol it's like an itch Brain said "but I know the right thing, so if I just share it then the right thing will get into that other brain saying the wrong thing" and it's just a brainmelting back and forth

Ответ для Ember

yeah and part of escaping the loop is recognizing that the person making bad faith arguments isn't really your audience anymore, it's other people. so instead of explaining why their various things aren't literally true, you have to focus on explaining what they're really doing and why

Ответ для Anthony Moser

Yep. Makes me think of a certain debate-guy (though there are many like him), that's what he'd be out looking for, people to give his bad-faith arguments grace, cause apparently thats 'the right way' to do things when all he was doing was being politely racist/misogynistic/transphobic

Thank you for this. I'm about to do a mini-unit w/ my students on misinformation in public health & this is actually a really helpful explanation of what to do instead of just refuting it.
