My brain works in both Fahrenheit and Celsius, i can use either scale for weather or cooking; i am however one hundred percent incapable of translating. i have to look it up every single time

reconciled to the fact there will never be a point at which temperatures in F make sense to my brain in terms of actually judging what any of it means and I will be Googling versions of "what is 72 F in C" every day for the rest of my time here

May I jump in w/ a suggestion? Most of the time you don't actually need to convert. Just use your familiarity & apply whichever number you need to "room temperature" or "fever" or "too hot outside" or "freezing" (OK, we all do know that one w/ exactitude).

With that, 0=30, and 40=100, you can basically jump by 10(20) degrees at a time and be close enough.

I mostly work in Celsius but have a good sense of weather in Fahrenheit - until it gets really cold. I need to check the temp to roast a chicken at every time, and I’ve been cooking since I was about nine

My undergrad was in Chemical Engineering. And unit conversion was a key part of the curriculum. Repetition drove it so I still remember, years later. I can’t remember Planck’s constant, but “water is roughly 8 lbs per gallon,” that will never leave me. I do not recommend this method, however.

I was so thrilled to see this thinking "now *THAT* is a thing I can remember!" & I just had to look it up because I already forgot. But I do remember "room temperature" is 20⁰ although that's 4⁰F lower than what I think of a room temperature in US (72⁰F) because I learned that long ago.

Double it and add 30. That’s how I was told to convert °C to °F. So vice versa the other way? This is for weather rather than cooking. 25°C = approx 80 °F

My dad is pretty fluent in both metric and customary/imperial length measurements. I think a lot of UK folks are but I could be wrong.

0C is 32F - freezing point! everything below 0C is just cold, to the point where -40C equals -40F like another person mentioned. 37C is 98F - human body temperature! Also useful for "anywhere around this temp" is too bloody hot outside.

As a substitute teacher I had to figure out a quick way to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit. As a non mathematician this is my (within a few degrees) solution. Double the Celsius and add 20 equals Fahrenheit. No good for baking(too loosey-goosey) but a way to understand European temps vs American.

That’s what I go by, it’s close enough. Weight is easy unless a recipe calls for grams but my kitchen scale has a setting for that.

If it's any consolation, I'm a SCUBA diver but my father used to fly aeroplanes for the RAF - so I describe altitude in feet but depth in metres, swapping over at sea level.

Britain is the great-granddaddy of the mess, so the legacy shit is on them. (most post 1990 stoves can toggle between F/C so it may be a skill/RTFM issue)

The only conversions I can do are '200 is 400 is 6' for cooking, and '16 is 61' for air temperature. Don't ask me any others except for the rather unhelpful 'minus 40 is the same in both' !

61F is 16C. My mum told me this one. I am terrible at F and have to do rough calculation back to C when I’m in US before I decide what to wear. (For cooking, I look it up properly.)

After five years in Canada, I'm functional in metric for ambient temperature (and distance and weight)... but when I cook, it's in an ad-hoc mix of Fahrenheit, cups and grams.

In the 1970s when I trained to a teacher, our maths lecturer said "don't convert" to metric measurements and vice versa. Get used to working in metric. We were a bit flummoxed by a hectare. Our lecturer said it's the size of a football pitch. Can bake in metric.

I grew up in a metric country and now that I’m in a mishmash one, I can easily and speedily move from cm to feet/in and back again for height, but for weight my brain sees lb/stones and just nopes out like it walked into a door. Have to look it up every time.

I know what C feels like for warm to moderate weather more or less, but get me below 20 and I have no idea anymore. I’m guessing that means 20 is around 70. i also know that 100 is 212 and 0 is 32. One of those is considerably more useful as a reference point than the other 🤣

It's so weird because I feel heat in F because I grew up in a warm climate and cold in C because my adulthood was spent in colder Europe. I have such a hard time choosing clothes when it's warm in C or cold in F. I have to translate back and then I go "Oh, okay..."

My use of Celsius is more limited — I can’t do weather — but for the things where I can do both, I can’t translate either. Even when it’s a fixed value that I know by memory in both, like body temperature. Tell it to me in one, and I temporarily forget what it is in the other.
