The Odyssey is a nice example of the problem with every effort to "understand" Trumpers. There's nothing to "understand" here: this man has no idea what happens in Homer's epic, he's an arrogant dimwit with a made-up version in his head that he uses as an excuse to be weird and racist. That's it.

Agreed, and it's so deeply wired that right-wingers are incapable of understanding culture outside of narrow political utility/grievance. They literally can't perceive The Odyssey, or Sinners, or Bad Bunny at half-time as artistic works, they graft their malicious politics onto it and they're done.

I think these guys look for cultural properties that can be used to exclude the Other. They don’t necessarily like the Odyssey - or know anything about it - but they view it as a weapon to wield against their various perceived enemies.
