The Odyssey is a nice example of the problem with every effort to "understand" Trumpers. There's nothing to "understand" here: this man has no idea what happens in Homer's epic, he's an arrogant dimwit with a made-up version in his head that he uses as an excuse to be weird and racist. That's it.

lastpositivist

Matt Walsh complains that Nolan brought his obsession with nonlinear story telling to the Odyssey, undercutting the original's narrative. The defenders of western civilisation, folks.

You can't fix stupid. Well I mean, you can, but then they've got to wear a cone for the next few weeks or they'll keep licking at the stitches.

If they don’t they’ll like it, don’t see it. I’ve somehow managed to avoid Kirk Cameron movies with no apparent ill effects to my life.

The more of these "histerical accuracy" rants I see, the more convinced I am that these people's knowledge of greek myth starts and ends with God of War.

It's the same group of people complaining about every film and tv show. There's no way they're watching all these things they complain about. There's no way they've read all the source material. Push back with the slightest bit of gatekeeping and it shuts them down.

At this point, it's not even worth seeking out their terrible takes. Just let them wallow in their own crapulence and keep it out of your timeline for your own peace. They're irrelevant uncurious boring men.

I tried imagining what a linear Odyssey movie would have felt like - did he want the ratios at each stop along the way to hold, too?? Because finishing the journey with that much time with Calypso would have been a real crowd pleaser

They always do this when they've been unable to ruin something with their KKKristofascist agit-prop, which is intended to erect an illusion of having asserted cultural power: They immediately switch gears and resort to attempts at manufacturing criticisms and tear-downs that they hope will be...1/2

Ответ для Sniffit

2/2...considered more acceptable and mainstream and will achieve the desired result that their racist screeds failed to achieve. This is also about creating an illusion of exercising power and attempt at proving they can get what they want for racist reasons via sophistry that pretends otherwise.

Yeah, well the box office opening at $124 million basically proves Matt Walsh is wrong..

Homer told the story of the Odyssey in a non-linear fashion.......so, yeah.

Racism wrapped in white fragility and hate. If you to to understand beyond that, you're merely wishing to find something that isn't there.

Really take seriously someone who comes down off their racist soapbox to do some sober film critique

nothing new here, think about all the people who criticized “The 1619 Project” without having read a page of it.

Thank you for making this joke 15 minutes before I thought to!

Raise your hand if you care what Mast Walsh thinks. Zip zed zero.

It's annoying that chuds don't like The Odyssey, because The Odyssey was genuinely not very good.

Ответ для Josh

I also thought it was just ok and I know I'm in the minority. I thought the themes were a bit of a mess and I think, for me, there were too many things that took me out of the story. Also that last battle was far too long. Acting and cinematics were great, as expected. Imho.

In many ways, yeah. These people are just dumb and banal, which led them to be evil as they lack curiosity or the ability to understand anything. Just incredible that they were the winning sperm, what a tragedy.

"We need a non-woke Odyssey that reflects our culture!" GOOD NEWS!

Not even that! Wait till you learn that Virgil was VERY gay.

I watched a video about the Daily Wire's Bluey knockoff and these kind of people don't enjoy reading, they enjoy the aesthetics and want to bring their own message without thinking about the actual intentions. They are hateful hollow shells of people.

What a *moron* Walsh is. It. Is. A. Hollywood. Movie.

It's exhausting talking to (some) U.S. liberals about this. "We need to understand their reasons for voting for the explicitly racist candidate and not just assume it's about racism!" No, it's literally just the racism.

These guys tried to start a culture war around inclusion of trans actors and actors of color, the entire country ignored them, the movie became a massive hit, now they’re stuck attempting criticism of a movie they didn’t see based on a poem they never read

And trying to claim it is a historical account

Normalize dismissing Trump supporters with: "oh, you're racist."

Worth noting that there is no way to adapt it in a way that they'll ever approve of. Their objection is that the movie belongs to people they don't consider human, but they don't want the content of the movie themselves. The movie they want is a re-themed Turner Dairies.

Im sure he read a child's anthology of Greek myths or maybe a Spark notes of the Odyssey in high school. Hes basing his understanding on that.

People like Walsh are paid handsomely by right wing donors to discredit liberal society and everything about it. The quality of their “arguments” is immaterial. Why? To pave the way for more tax cuts and deregulation.

We’ve been dealing with this problem for so long because people forget how simple it all is. Fascism spreads because it’s a dumb and lazy ideology that’s dressed up under the guise of sophistication.

I love the idea that non-linear story-telling is a "gimmick" that apparently Nolan invented. 😆

Did you see the one where someone was bitching that Nolan was unimaginative for calling the "mentor character" Mentor 🤦‍♂️

I think they just count on the outrage bringing attention to them. Not sure why people pay any attention to him or people like him.

They saw the movie 300

Listen, I love the Wishbone classic "Homer Sweet Homer," but has Matt only ever seen the Wishbone classic "Homer Sweet Homer"?!

Ответ для Aaron Sarka

I can't stress enough that people need to research 4chan culture to understand whats going on with twitter. /tv/, the movie board, does this with every single film that comes out lol, it has nothing to do with the thing itself, just testing to see how far they can influence people and get a reaction

if you have trouble with nonlinear storytelling in the movie just wait until you read the book 📕 #idiocracy

The nutballs on his social media site started talking about the imagined problem of black women appearing in movies and now he's going to rescue them. Basically the same deal at his noble cave rescue attempt. He got an LLM summary of the epic poem and he's ready to roll! Dunning-Kruger made flesh.

Like they never mention the swan parent ever.

They are buffoons but it is kind of surprising western civilization’s second book invented half the post modernist cliches.

Matt Walsh: classics scholar?

What more do you need to know other than the idiots of the country rallied around their idiot king, and slightly less idiotic people who should have known better decided to go along with it?

Complaining about flashbacks and jumpcuts and asides in Homer is the surest way to say you have never cracked the cover of ANY edition of the Iliad OR the Odyssey!

Ответ для jaimi

I see that Walsh never went to college and mocks higher education as liberal folly, but we read Homer in freshman year, so…

I think if you asked anyone about the most difficult times in their life with the greatest rewards and failures they would tell you everything was too rushed and took too long.

They make sense to me when I think of outrage and grievance as a drug. It’s like they need it every day - what it is or does it make sense or is it accurate doesn’t really matter. They are dependent on whatever brain chemicals are released to get their daily outrage “fix”.

They enjoy being outraged just to be outraged. Also being mad at everything apparently pays well

@newyorker.com were critical too because there were not enough gods and a lot of the violence and torture from the original were omitted in the film

Their attraction to Odysseus likely comes from his rampages in Book 2 (missing the hubris) and the slaughter of the Suitors. Also ironic that they attach themselves to ideas of masculinity from the ancient Greeks. Who wants to tell them about the same sex ideal?

Ответ для Hal Incandenza

They’re busy reinventing this from worst principles.

Sometimes I wonder if it's intentional. Like go forth! Love who you wanna love! There's apps and everything! Not sure why we need to be perpetually dragged into their identity crises

His stated reason here for not liking it is not the real reason - he doesn’t like it because Zendaya and Elliot Page are in it, but he’s afraid to say that. Hence the contrived faux movie critic approach.

Ответ для Jameslet

Elliot Page (and I was concerned it would be a gimmick) so totally works as Sinan because of who the character represents in the story.

Kindof embarrassingly dumb and simple that underneath all the sound and fury it appears that Musk just plain wants the most talented filmmakers and actors and wealthiest studios on earth to serve directly to him something that looks like it was filmed for and released on tv during his own childhood.

Ответ для FREEBROOKLYN❌👑

Along the lines of what you wrote here I've seen right wing types come out of the woodwork to praise the 1997 Hallmark TV adaptation of the Odyssey with Armand Assante. They absolutely want something that looks like it was made for TV.

He would get upset if they cast a half-Japanese guy as the lead in a live-action version of Mobile Suit Gundam.

It boils down to their 3 main characteristics: 1 Perpetually aggrieved 2 Purposefully ignorant 3 Never curious.

Agreed, and it's so deeply wired that right-wingers are incapable of understanding culture outside of narrow political utility/grievance. They literally can't perceive The Odyssey, or Sinners, or Bad Bunny at half-time as artistic works, they graft their malicious politics onto it and they're done.

Denny Carter

I think these guys look for cultural properties that can be used to exclude the Other. They don’t necessarily like the Odyssey - or know anything about it - but they view it as a weapon to wield against their various perceived enemies.

When you absolutely did not do the reading

Ответ для Max Kennerly

It’s the same reason that Musk et al have always gravitated towards science fiction like Blade Runner. He’s never seen it, has no idea what’s going on in it, but nerd culture is a great way to gatekeep and push the Other out.

Ответ для Max Kennerly

It's a microcosm of their view of "the West," every part of which is utterly disposable except for and in service of its demographic makeup c. 1950.

Ответ для Max Kennerly

Everything is some fun house mirror image version of how they imagine left wing politics are. American reactionary conservatives are truly nihilistic. You simply can't take them in good faith about any complaint. Their goal is domination not, understanding.

And dumber still, they don't even really make that choice themselves. They see other people doing it and copy them.

There's also a superiority of western civilization angle to this, something that's haunted translation and other academic fields for decades. See: Edith Hamiliton's 'Greek miracle' and 'light of the West vs. the dark, savage barbarism' of the East. See also: Stephen Miller's CK eulogy.

Ответ для Max Kennerly

Their only reaction to art is to see a queer or nonwhite person and shriek until they have an accident.

Ответ для Max Kennerly

It's also why their art is so bad. They're convinced the other side only hires on ideological grounds, so surely if they do it too it should work. Then they fail every time after hiring all the "right" people and then nothing else.

But there was a time when he would have been marginalized for that. How do we get back to that time?

Ответ для Jared Friedman 🇺🇦

One gets the impression that Mr. Walsh must have spent approximately 50% of that movie's nearly 3 hour run time lounging around at the concession stand. If he had this much trouble tracking the narrative HERE, just imagine what Tarantino's 'Pulp Fiction' would have done to his underutilized 'brain.'

He is weird and racist but this particular criticism isn’t. I don’t agree but I’d rather he express opinions like this versus some of the other ones he’s come up with.

Ответ для Navid

but he's only expressing this criticism because he has issues with the movie for weird racist reasons

It also shows the guy has zero understanding of what movies are. Let alone what screen writing is. All Walsh wants is to complain, he has an audience of malcontents and that's what he's gonna play to.

oh I had high hopes for Odyssey, but I guess thats how he interpreted the epic

They are the children of segregation; there is no such thing as a public space. It all has to either be controlled by “us“ or “them“. They hated a movie before it was even released, and rather than admit wrong, they’re backing into “success or no, it still stinks bcuz woke”

Ответ для Denny Carter

Yes, and the only things they know about the Odyssey are that it's really old and comes from Europe (albeit a part that's further south and east than they'd prefer), ergo it must contain whatever they declare to be 'western values."

Without a doubt. And they do that exact same thing with everything from The Bible to The Odyssey to Marvel Comics.

Ответ для Denny Carter

They do this with *everything* and then when one gains a little bit of traction they put more energy into airing grievances for those stories. They're AB testing to see how they can best rile up their racist fanbase.

I can't put myself into the shoes of pathology.

I'd also point out that time spent on each scene has nothing to do with it being non-linear.

"The things you hate don't make you special" - the implication being that the things you love do! So be passionate and interesting about whatever, and you'll find your people. MAGAs have 0 of this. There's no passion in a positive direction. They cannot create, and they aren't very smart.

Whoever said “he’s an idiot’s idea of a smart person” was completely bang on

this is the thing, people calling it conservative backlash, its not its just people mad that black people or trans people (or both) have jobs and can be seen by the public and also just cynical content farming, glomming onto a popular thing so they can get attention and clicks and MONEY!

My tinfoil hat theory is exactly this, but also that it's a ploy to get folks to willingly give up their rights and economic opportunities in exchange paper-thin culture-war wins. Real patriots don't want healthcare or for the rich to pay taxes, don't ya know. White Helen of Troy says so

What I'm hearing is 70% of the movie should have been Odysseus living on Ogygia with Calypso and another 5% with Calypso.
