The more of these "histerical accuracy" rants I see, the more convinced I am that these people's knowledge of greek myth starts and ends with God of War.

There is a very revealing story in one of Michael Moore's books, where he talks about debating some right-whinger who complains that 'our schools aren't teaching the Odyssey or the Iliad anymore'. He asks her what the Iliad is, and she can't answer.

It's the same group of people complaining about every film and tv show. There's no way they're watching all these things they complain about. There's no way they've read all the source material. Push back with the slightest bit of gatekeeping and it shuts them down.

At this point, it's not even worth seeking out their terrible takes. Just let them wallow in their own crapulence and keep it out of your timeline for your own peace. They're irrelevant uncurious boring men.

I tried imagining what a linear Odyssey movie would have felt like - did he want the ratios at each stop along the way to hold, too?? Because finishing the journey with that much time with Calypso would have been a real crowd pleaser

Worth noting that there is no way to adapt it in a way that they'll ever approve of. Their objection is that the movie belongs to people they don't consider human, but they don't want the content of the movie themselves. The movie they want is a re-themed Turner Dairies.

Im sure he read a child's anthology of Greek myths or maybe a Spark notes of the Odyssey in high school. Hes basing his understanding on that.

People like Walsh are paid handsomely by right wing donors to discredit liberal society and everything about it. The quality of their “arguments” is immaterial. Why? To pave the way for more tax cuts and deregulation.

Complaining about flashbacks and jumpcuts and asides in Homer is the surest way to say you have never cracked the cover of ANY edition of the Iliad OR the Odyssey!

I think if you asked anyone about the most difficult times in their life with the greatest rewards and failures they would tell you everything was too rushed and took too long.

They make sense to me when I think of outrage and grievance as a drug. It’s like they need it every day - what it is or does it make sense or is it accurate doesn’t really matter. They are dependent on whatever brain chemicals are released to get their daily outrage “fix”.

Their attraction to Odysseus likely comes from his rampages in Book 2 (missing the hubris) and the slaughter of the Suitors. Also ironic that they attach themselves to ideas of masculinity from the ancient Greeks. Who wants to tell them about the same sex ideal?

His stated reason here for not liking it is not the real reason - he doesn’t like it because Zendaya and Elliot Page are in it, but he’s afraid to say that. Hence the contrived faux movie critic approach.

Agreed, and it's so deeply wired that right-wingers are incapable of understanding culture outside of narrow political utility/grievance. They literally can't perceive The Odyssey, or Sinners, or Bad Bunny at half-time as artistic works, they graft their malicious politics onto it and they're done.

But there was a time when he would have been marginalized for that. How do we get back to that time?

One gets the impression that Mr. Walsh must have spent approximately 50% of that movie's nearly 3 hour run time lounging around at the concession stand. If he had this much trouble tracking the narrative HERE, just imagine what Tarantino's 'Pulp Fiction' would have done to his underutilized 'brain.'

I think these guys look for cultural properties that can be used to exclude the Other. They don’t necessarily like the Odyssey - or know anything about it - but they view it as a weapon to wield against their various perceived enemies.

I'd also point out that time spent on each scene has nothing to do with it being non-linear.
