You trimmed off the top of my post. I think right now it’s abundantly clear that what people need is a grounding in a broad education in the humanities. Setting kids up to go on apprenticeships (particularly before you’ve established if there’s space in the jobs market) is IMO a bad idea

It’s becoming abundantly clear that a broad education rooted in the humanities provides people with the skillsets desperately needed to navigate our fragmented & polarised information environment. The last thing the UK should be doing is sending kids on vocational pathways at aged 14/15.

Fundamentally vocational education is grounded in a “job for life” mentality, leave school early get the skills to be a machinist, mechanic or plumber, & that’s now your job until you die. The economy doesn’t work like that any more. Most people will retrain and reskill at least once in their life.

Sam Freedman

The other issue with vocational at 14 is implicit selection. Well off families will ensure their kids do academic courses. This happens at 16 anyway but at least we give everyone a chance to get a set of academic quals.

Don’t worry, I’m sure they’ve thought through how this will be staffed, funded, and the class size implications for GCSE options. They learned that from the last time, right? RIGHT? www.tes.com/magazine/new...

Across 26 countries analysed, avg of 30.1% of land burned by wildfires overlapped with Natura 2000 sites. In Ireland, equivalent figure was substantially higher, at almost 54% ... majority of fires occurring on protected sites from human activity, including illegal burning & recreational activities

The Journal

Ireland has one of Europe’s highest rates of wildfire overlap with protected nature sites, a cross-border investigation carried out alongside @investigates.thejournal.ie has found.

Used to work with a guy whose "thing" was to make silly bets for money (which he would always lose). This culminated in a chili eating competition at a work-do in a Thai restaurant where he ended up running away being violently sick (I should add his wife was at the meal).

Honestly? Every Irish person knows at least one of these guys. They're all called Cormac or Ross or Ivor, and they're the self-proclaimed "mad yoke" of the group, or as we like to call him, "that fucking dose". It will later transpire that their dad is a High Court judge & they become a barrister
