Would you like to read an eminent scholar contrasting the film to Homer's tale? What about a hilarious acerbic rant about Nolan like he's little more than Michael Bay in an ascot? How about both of them woven together? 😂 A fun read regardless of whether you agree with Emily Wilson.

This review is like being Chotiner’d: “Unlike some of Nolan’s other films, The Odysseyis not boring, thanks to the source material, which is impossible to mess up entirely.” First paragraph, I’m dying www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

the corruption number here makes me want to turn into the joker and then, as the joker, turn into a significantly more unhinged joker

Key thing to understand about "remigration" is that it doesn't mean "send immigrants home." He's an immigrant, Peter Thiel is an immigrant, etc. It's not even a white nationalism project, it's a trans-Atlantic white continentalism project, nations themselves aren't important, only race matters.

Sunder Katwala (sundersays)

Elon Musk, owner of X, has called the editor of the Economist "a traitor to the West, plain and simple" after her recent interview with him. He now argues that "anyone who opposes remigration is a traitor" Musk has been socialising violence since Aug25: "fight or die, that's what it comes down to"

Schatz has the same pathology as Newsom: a need to show "I'm just like you" to awful people with bad values. It's not even cynicism; it yields no additional votes. Destroying USAID was an illegal act by white nationalists with genocidal intent and it has killed people. That's more than just "bad."

Gross to see a senator skip over the part where the aid was cut off illegally and without warning. Cooking their brains on a right wing owned social media site.

Claims from the right are always taken on their own terms—unless they're so outrageous they need sane-washing first. Claims from the left (even if the majority position) are always contorted to right-wing portrayals of them and framed as a slippery slope.

related to another bizarre feature of political discussion in the US: that it's supposed to mark you as reasonable/bipartisan/fair or whatever that you take these discourses on their own terms. as opposed to marking you as (at best!) a mark

Today, in violations of the rule of law that would be sufficient for impeachment in any other American presidency but aren't in this one because pathological partisan loyalty has rotted the constitutional order:

NEW: In a stunning admission, the Trump administration admitted in court documents that it canceled billions in energy grants to states "based solely" on politics -- and whether that state was represented by Democrats and backed Harris in 2024. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/24/b...

"Precedential stay" is not a thing. There is no lawful process by which a Circuit Court says "nuh uh," without any reasoning whatsoever, and thereby enjoins every district court from enforcing the law. Every member of the panel who voted for it must be impeached; anything less is lawlessness.

Steve Vladeck

On Tuesday, the full Fifth Circuit granted DOJ's request for a "precedential stay" of district court rulings holding that the Due Process Clause requires bond hearings for immigration detainees w/in 90 days of their arrest. Today's "One First" explains why that's a really big (and problematic) deal:
