Age comes for us all.

So long as you have joy, you have fun, you have summer in the sun, let the waves you plane cause a little pain.

That abrasion is really just your third eye opening up to the fact that you aren’t 15 any more.

But you're a better writer than John Milius.

Ocean waves show no mercy.

The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

When I was a teen we’d head to the coast as hurricanes approached for the surf. Amazing any of us survived.

It's always a surprise for me to see my grandmother in the mirror. Doesn't feel like it's been that long.

But the ride was worth it!

Was 25 and cavorting and body surfing in the refreshing surf at a place called Dix Cove in West Africa. And then right down into the sand..broken collar bone. I commiserate.

Know the feeling. Popped a kneecap doing same in Mexico. And I’ll do it again. Get back in there.

Body surfing brings us back to our roots.

I have that same realization every time I stand up too quickly.

In my father’s wedding pictures, he had a bunch of stitches in his forehead from something similar. Taught me to always keep an arm down once you feel the wave dissipate.

When I was 19 I fell 32 feet off a sea cliff and popped back to my feet - not a bruise. 3 years ago, I fell 12 feet off a ladder and ruined my back for 6 months. I might have broken a toe as well - never broken a bone so I'm not sure. My mind says I'm 30. My body disagrees.

Age is not an excuse to stop surfing in any form.

Head first into a largely inflexible low hanging branch when bike riding two weeks ago. Concussed despite helmet. *Amazed that my 52 year old head is still sore (*not amazed).

Same w my MTB riding. I just don't bounce like I used to bounce.

When I was a kid we'd go to Fire Island where my aunt and uncle had a place. I used to get the shit kicked out of me by the waves, but it was GLORIOUS. Some great summer memories at Ocean Beach!

I’m now 74… Tore my meniscus on the dance floor. I broke a rib on my grandkids slip and slide…I was airborne!

In my youth I read a book about body surfing written by a judge in California. In it he shared a possibly apocryphal origin story for John Wayne: that a bodysurfing shoulder injury cut off his college football prospects and he turned to acting. Was at Bethany this weekend...this old broad was literally the only one body surfing...hardly even any boogie boards. The waves were perfect for both. Is that just not a thing anymore? Fortunately I escaped sand pounding!

I had that same realization when I tried jumping rope last year. At 64.

My body chose an L1 compression fracture to notify me that my appliance-moving days are over 😐 I've gotten more pictures of my insides lately than anyone should really want.

Beyond a certain age, the internal organs do not seem to be packed in there quite as securely as before.

Learn to surf a kayak. 10 on thrills, 4 on potential harm. Surf inlets & tide races. Long Island has some great opportunities.

We get more hydrodynamic as we get older. That unexpected speed can really fuck things up.

Am coming up on 69... Was thinking of turning cartwheels. Errr. Um, no. Scratch that.

I was 15 years old 60 years ago, and these days my adventurous sports activity is brisk strolling. Anything else telegraphs pain up my entire body.

Tripped over my dog two months ago and ended up face planting without getting my arms up in time (dog ran in front and the leash kinda pulled my arm sideways). Was in the hospital with a concussion, two black eyes, a slightly bent nose and road rash on my face. I still have a lump on my forehead.

It’s better to be much much older than the alternative
