It's fun watch Bari Weiss grasping her way to figuring out what journalism is through her hires at 60 Minutes. Is it when you ask a prominent person a question and nod? Is it when you make sure that something Benny Johnson said on Twitter makes it into a reported story despite it not being true?

I was 15 years old 60 years ago, and these days my adventurous sports activity is brisk strolling. Anything else telegraphs pain up my entire body.

The relatively short waves of depression that wash over me periodically are weird. There's never a specific reason, they are debilitating in the short run, but never last more than three or four hours. They also don't hit more than once every two or three weeks.

True on both counts. I know the rule for affect/effect, and even lay/lie (I lie down on a bed but I lay something down on a table). But 75 years of being Southern makes "I'm going to lie down" sound stilted to my ear.

It doesn't help that I'm a Southerner, so misuse of lay and lie is built into the dialect.

Mine are the classics. I always get them right, but have to hesitate over them every time: affect/effect compliment/complement The only pair I've given up on is lay/lie. I just restructure sentences with alternative words so I never have to use them.
