💯 I always wonder what tourists who have to rent a car and such to get there think. It is such a joke.

Ответ для Mary Lewis

It's not as though it's the only thing to see there.

Ответ для Matthew Nadler

Yes! There is a pretty view of the harbor. If you are a history buff, tour the Mayflower replica down the block or the museum up the hill. Meander up Herring Run Park to the Grist Mill. Peruse the shops & restaurants. Walk down to the beach & splash in the waves. Hop aboard a harbor cruise.

My most disappointing landmark was the Hill of Tara in Ireland. Supposed to be the high seat of the kings of Ireland! Just some mounds and no context or anything. Like, gimme some plaques and stuff!

Ответ для Coulahan

I bet it’s a funeral mound!

worst zen garden 0/10

Look, any excuse for a school field trip is valid.

Someone should stick a Danish flag on it.

Oh, so that’s why all those extra ammo boxes and health potions are lying around right outside of Plymouth Bay.

Similar to the Liberty Bell or the Rocky Statue in Philadelphia. A backdrop for an “I was here” photo.

this rock irks me lmao

still, it's exhilarating to imagine the pilgrims sailing all the way from England on it.

Ответ для Jimmy L 📚

They actually got lost twice, probably landed at the bottom of Cape Cod and tried a few more times to land on the continent. The whole story is a revisionist myth.

Ответ для Jimmy L 📚
Ответ для Quaestor 🦇 aka old wise Dino of the pond

I get your point but I can't tell whether you got mine. there would have been no genocide if they'd sailed on a rock.

Ответ для Jimmy L 📚

The replica Mayflower gets me. Months on what is a -very small- ship with so many people on what is a ferocious ocean. No idea of what would be waiting for them. No Coast Guard, no modern medicine. Whatever rock they did find probably looked really good.

Like Trump's hands: small.

it'd be great if it somehow could be combined with the Blarney Stone

It used to be bigger. A *lot* bigger...

☠️ omg. We were like wtf! That said, we got lobster bisque at some shack on that street that was life changing so a win!

In the Netherlands there is a 'location of a former fort' somewhere in the woods. That is basically just a sign in the woods that says 'it was here' and then there is a very slight hill in the landscape. But at least it isn't a famous landmark, but was really funny to once walk past it.

Ответ для Soyweiser

Is the hill the remain of an earthen mound the walls were built on?

Ответ для Dave M. 🇨🇦⚜️

'hill' here was the ground being raised half a meter, at least that was the only part I recall seeing, it was all quite overgrown. Without the sign it was not clear anything was there at all.

I went to high school in Plymouth. A friend of mine was one of the "rangers" who'd give regular history talks about the Rock and at one point he'd just start making up random facts so the talk would be more interesting.

Ответ для Peter Clines

classic Rock

Ответ для Peter Clines

He might as well. The rock was chosen at random. There is no actual documentation on where the Mayflower landed. The story is Bunk anyway. My family lived in North America before the Mayflower landed anyway.

Ответ для Steve Danger Moore

Considering Squanto greeted the pilgrims in English, yeah people had been there before.

Ответ для Cblodg

My family arrived in Nova Scotia sometime around 1569 and moved to the Salem, MA area around 1590. They traded with the First Nations and treated them as the owners of the land. It wasn't until the government of England decided upon colonization as a way to remove undesirables that things got dicey.

Ответ для Steve Danger Moore

4,500 years of empire building & destroying - you'd think we (the human race) would have found a better way by now and yet...🤷‍♀️

Ответ для Cblodg

And given the state of the 'English' language back then they'd be doing well to find 2 unrelated Englishman who sounded like that they were both speaking the same language. 😀 (Some might say - they struggle in the 21st century.)

The Plymouth Rock site is ridiculous, but if you get a good ranger when you’re there, they will at least make it entertaining. The Massasoit statue and Metacomet plaque nearby are more interesting.

Plenty of other good things to see in Plymouth

As I child I thought I was being taken to see Gibraltar

Damn, and I thought the Blarney stone was a bonerkiller

Ответ для L Faunt aka Alfred Glitchcock

The Blarney Stone is a completely random piece of masonry but at least they hang you upside down and let you put your mouth on it, which is fun

Ответ для Shaenon K. Garrity

good ole herpes rock.

Ответ для L Faunt aka Alfred Glitchcock

talk about precision tho. pilgrims LANDED on that thing

Ответ для Jerry Chen

a whole coastline available and they were like no. this rock right here

Ответ для Alexander Luckmann

I prefer the alternative interpretation, that they were sailing blindly ahead at full speed and then the Mayflower got high-centered on this moderately-sized landscape boulder

Ответ для Brent Simmons

Large boulder the size of a small boulder, imo.

Ответ для Übermentions

Large boulder the size of a small boulder in a hole the size of 20 washing machines

Ответ для Alexander Luckmann

So actually no, it’s not even the original rock

Ответ для Dave (@6502_ftw from Tweets)

Ответ для Jerry Chen

how did they land through the cage tho

Ответ для b

drones

Ответ для Jerry Chen

Maybe they didn’t LAND there, maybe they just used it as a stepping rock.

Ответ для Jerry Chen

They left Plymouth, England, travelled over 3000 miles and managed to land on that rock. It's incredible.

Ответ для Bryan Andrews

and the rock they landed on was in an entirely different town with the same name! Incredible what are the chances

Ответ для Jerry Chen

Even more precise for it to land on so many people

Ответ для Jerry Chen

Unbelievable. The only thing more impressive would be if someone immediately came running down the beach demanding beer in perfect english.

wait til you find out it was named after a corporation that was providing the colonies with labor that also happened to own the mayflower

Ответ для Neo-post eco-andean modern-brutalism architecture

correction: IT'S A ROCK!

Well they did have to cage this poor rock, else it would be going buck wild for the last 200 years and THEN where would we be??

Plymouth Rock rocks, I don’t care if everyone hates it

Wow, and I thought Manneken Pis seemed overrated. It’s a quite small statue. 19” tall. The one by the street is a replica. You could easily walk by and not notice. They dress it up sometimes for fun. Beats the hell out of that rock though.

Ответ для Patrick

The Shibuya Hachiko statue is another disappointing one. People who ask ChatGPT for itinerary are told to make time to ‘explore the Hachiko statue’ and it’s a life sized dog on a five feet tall pedestal teenagers used as a date meeting spot before cellphones :p nothing to explore there.

do folks be dragging their balls on it like the blarney stone tho?

Ответ для maxwell!

maybe that's where we went wrong. not enough ball-dragging

Ответ для maxwell!

No. There’s literally nothing interesting about it except what sorts of trash wound up in the pit that day.

To be fair to Plymouth rock, it got broken in half and people chipped off thousands of pounds of it. That being said going to see it is VERY uunderwhelming

The recreated village the mayflower are what makes that area fun. But yeah, a rock is a rock lol

I always thought it was like the name given to a rocky outcrop, like a cape, or something. Why is it notable?!

Ответ для Dave M. 🇨🇦⚜️

This is the decided upon spot they claim the Mayflower landed in 1620. They did it to keep tourists from wandering through people's property looking for the fictional Plymouth Rock. In the description "rock" actually described the rocky coastline probably somewhere on Cape Cod. They were lost.

Ответ для Steve Danger Moore

They couls have chose ANYWHERE and they chose the tiny boulder?

Ответ для Dave M. 🇨🇦⚜️

It was on public land and had room for a car park. With the Advent of the automobile came the Advent of the unfettered tourist. Giving them a car park and a plaque kept them off the locals lawns.

Ответ для Steve Danger Moore

The story is more interesting than the rock itself

Ответ для Dave M. 🇨🇦⚜️

The dirt next to it is more interesting. The air above it and the water a mere few meters away are more interesting. It's the Egress that P. T. Barnum wanted us all to see.

The tourist equivalent of trying Turkish Delight for the first time.

Ответ для Mike Intaglietta

Most definitely not a delight.

Ответ для Mike Intaglietta

Turkish Delight is awesome and needs no magic for me to betray my siblings over it.

Ответ для Timmy O'Danaos

It’s no marzipan.

Ответ для Dave M. 🇨🇦⚜️

Marzipan is possibly even better, yes. It's also what the Dutch translation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which I read as a child, used instead of Turkish Delight. So either way I could empathize with Edmund.

What takes this one from good to great is all the people standing around looking at it. As if they were waiting at the Snake House at the zoo to see if the boa constrictor was going to do anything.

not fair, you didn't get its good side.

I love Plymouth as a town but the rock is honestly in "so bad it's good" territory

Thinking I wish it had been a lot slipperier. A lot.

Worst karesansui ever.

Ok so I always assumed Plymouth Rock was the name of an area. Like a cliff system or an inlet. A place. You're telling me it's just an actual rock? As in a big pebble, or a small boulder?

Mayflower II is right there close by though!

Ответ для BIRDS! revered Economist

Plimoth Patuxet historical museum is cool.

All those years of people rubbing it for good luck wore it down, so they had to put a fence around it.😛

I've smoked bigger rocks.

The Plymouth Rock story never happened, that's actually just the soundstage where the filmed the fake pilgrim landing, like they did with the moon landing

Ответ для TheKert

America doesnt exist. All americans are actors and frankly at this point the writers are getting tired. Just look at the storylines, it jumped the shark back when a pretend cowboy became president.

Ответ для Dave Daveson

three real-estate scams in a trenchcoat

haha I knew this before I went but my husband and I went on a whim on our way back to Iowa from Maine (because it’s… en route… if you squint at the map…) and we were the only people there on that horrible early January day.

Lort, what boat did people land on it with, a tub toy?

Holy shit! That’s it? I always assumed it was the name of some sort of rocky headland or cliff!!

Ответ для MJAP

Me too! I've never thought to actually look it up but assumed it was a large geologic formation like you said. Wow.

Ответ для Rochelle

I know right! Glad I’m not the only one

Ответ для MJAP

not only is that it, but it's just symbolic on top of it all. That's not where they landed. 🙃

Ответ для Jeff Gentry

It keeps getting worse!

Ответ для MJAP

Yeah I'd always pictured basically gibraltar. In comparison this might as well be a random stone on the ground

Ответ для MJAP

At the time of landing it was big enough to be a landmark from far across the bay. But after settlement, it was useful raw material. The enclosure was built almost three centuries later when town fathers worried it would be gone soon. But by then nobody was sure which one it was.

Ответ для Tom Sgouros

Cape Cod is all sand, with the occasional huge boulder left there by the glaciers along with the sand.

Ответ для Tom Sgouros

Interesting, that explains it better and the whole ‘mini-zen-garden’ situation

Ответ для MJAP

Reality is sometimes pretty funny, too.

But it’s ass up. So that’s funny. 😆

I assumed 'rock' was an old timey way to mean a cliff or something, like there would be a whole beach under Plymouth Rock

Ответ для ArcadeBumstead

If that were true, they'd have been stranded on the beach. There are some very nice cliffs on Martha's Vineyard.

Ответ для Steve Danger Moore

Somewhere, I have a cache of videotapes from that era and this ad is on one of them.

It is the federal government's pet rock.

Plymouth Rock is the Pink Himalayan Salt of tourist attractions.

There's a split rock in Split Rock, PA that may be equally as underwhelming.

The first time I saw it I got so angry.

The rock just sits alone being mocked by the wall blocks for being undressed.

⬆️ This

couple of times i’ve visited, there were always crowds of upset and confused foreign tourists trying to convince themselves they were not in the right place

You don't go for the rock. You go for the Mayflower and plymouth playstation and the old village candy shop etc. It still sucks but the rock is one stop on the way through.

I still think “Juliet’s Balcony” in Verona is the lamest, specifically because it’s literally some random building with a balcony, and the person it’s attributed to is… y’know… fictional.

Our whole country is built on a lie.

The amazing part always is that the pilgrams were able to reach the rock despite the walls around it.

Geeze, they should rig a speaker to play the Price is Right Loser Horn as you view it.

They should let people take turns raking the sand like a giant zen garden

They used to just have it out where you could chip a piece off. Then someone worried that they'd run out of rock. The answer being that they'd just haul in another reassured no one.

I enjoyed my time there because we were in for a wedding and there was fun to be had. But I was BAFFLED by the rock itself.

The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen also raising her tiny hand!

Shh. No one tell Malcolm X.

Watching people slowly realize what they’re looking at is a fun side quest there.

My first trip there, I was picturing Gibraltar.

I kinda like it. Look, they raked around it like a zen garden. We went as a kid and I liked it. It’s a good place to meditate about America, or something.

I mean, it is a rock 🤷‍♀️

The White Rock in White Rock is more impressive. Admittedly, they named it because there was a big boulder on a random beach, but it is at least a boulder the size of a garage.

I saw it in the 70s, coming from the west coast of Canada. Truly disillusioned. I heard a great podcast about the myth podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/t...

I was severely disappointed by the Alamo but this rock is definitely way less impressive

Hey, it’s genius that the made a tourist attraction of out a rock. Pure genius.

This would improve it.

Pffft. Ive been to Plymouth, they've got loads of rocks, thats nothing. The real Plymouth has even got a Hoe Road as every good port town should.

it just looks like a sourdough boule

I don’t believe it. No way it’s that small.

Ответ для B. Coul

It used to be bigger (no joke). It broke when it was moved, and they glued pieces together.

The sand is very prettily maintained, though.

Ответ для Bobby

Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen is pretty underwhelming, but not compared to Plymouth Rock.

Wow. I move bigger rocks than that at work with just levers

My favorite part is the plaque that says “This rock is meaningless and somebody broke it but please just look at it anyway”

Is there a good gift shop at least? Buy a pet rock or something?

I thought for a minute this was Plymouth in the UK. Part of it does feel spiritually British

No The Ute Ceremonial Tree beats the Plymouth Rock.

They should have picked a bigger rock, those idiots

I've heard there is a bench a short distance away that is popular though- for people-watching the disappointment.

#seriouslyyouthoughtthiswastheactualrock?

From Plymouth Steps, Devon to Plymouth Rock, MA...😘 A special relationship.

I recall being disappointed and unimpressed upon seeing Plymouth Rock as a child. That may have been the start of me doubting everything I was told.

At least it won’t escape from its enclosure this time.

Grew up in Plymouth. The Rock was the most reliable tourist attraction when it came to scoring money for cigs from all the spare change tourists toss down there.

Ответ для Karina Coombs

The way the kids in NYC scoop up change tossed into fountains in Central Park. But Conservatory Garden is worth the voyage.

Ответ для Regina Schrambling

Fantastic. Yes, those Pilgrim wishes bought a lot of Newports in the 80s. While Plimoth Plantation is decent and the downtown museum is quite good, the Rock has always been predictably disappointingly.

Ответ для Karina Coombs

When I saw the Rock I remembered that Oscar Wilde quote about Niagara Falls being the second biggest disappointment of a honeymoon. (But the Falls are pretty amazing. Grand Canyon, however, is just a big hole in the ground.)

Ответ для Regina Schrambling

I’ll never get over the dismantling of the Pilgrim wax museum in the late 80s to make way for condos. It overlooked the water (and the Rock) and was pure joyful kitsch. Being a teenager and watching people travel from all over the world to see this dinky rock in the sand never made sense.

Ответ для Regina Schrambling

The grand canyon does have some wonderful vistas and interesting places, but I'd put the Athabaska Glacier over it, easily.

Ответ для thirddudeontheleft

Ответ для cjredbeard

I went to the Grand Canyon for the first time as an adult several years ago. They were having a rare "inversion", which meant this was the view. Less impressive than Plymouth Rock maybe.

That was one of my grandfather's favorite postcards, which was printed in a sepia tone. He said it looked like a "turd".
