Ugh, my sympathies. That's how I lost Merlin. He was worth $3900 and the insurance people were like, "It'll cost $4000 to repair it, so we're totalling it." Best of luck finding something soon!

What blows my mind with AI is the people who are like "how could you possibly function without it?" To which I say, "you, YOU literally did until what like 3 years ago? Did it degrade your brain that fast that you can't figure out how to do the thing you trained for years and earned a PhD to do?"
Brendan KeoghSurely the solution here is just *don't use AI tools* for your writing and research and continue to do your writing and research in ALL the ways you were doing it before you started using AI instead of doing the work??

The US just approved its 1st new sunscreen ingredient since 1999. Europe has used it since 1999. Bemotrizinol blocks both UVA & UVB rays, breaks down more slowly than existing chemical sunscreens, & is absorbed less into the bloodstream than those same sunscreens. buff.ly/xxBcsP9 #ShareGoodNewsToo

stephen miller killed this couple, as surely as if he'd pulled the trigger himself
Matt OrtegaStephen Miller said just the other day that all asylum claims are "fake." A couple deported from the U.S. to Guatemala were gagged, bound, and shot dead. Their 14-month old found crying next to their mother's body. People like Miller don't care though because this is the point: ethnic cleansing.

An entire article about the ways #ClimateChange is decimating the Bourdeux wine region of France — that never mentions the words “climate change.” This is journalistic malpractice. Not even high-school papers leave out such necessary context. #EndClimateSilence www.nytimes.com/2026/07/28/w...

These are all excellent reasons for wanting Betelgeuse to go boom, but I've now become more appreciative of Orion the constellation, and how this would ruin it. BUT -- I still want science and the cosmic fireworks. So ... a solution: LET'S SACRIFICE ETA CARINA. ⭐💥 NO ONE CARES ABOUT ETA CARINA.
Matthew R Francisscientific reasons of course are MANIFOLD. That booger's gonna be bright enough to see in daytime. We'd get so much data on the explosion itself, envelope dynamics, neutrino emissions, and maybe even gravitational waves (please gravitational waves).

People keep using the "can't put a genie back in the bottle" metaphor for "AI", even though in the stories they always get back in and current "AI" is more of a "we're spending trillions of dollars and the energy output of a continent trying to keep this bastard out of the bottle" situation

“As a librarian, I think it’s important to see this as…helping people reclaim their autonomy over whether they want to use AI tools,” Bailey said. “It’s important, especially when it can be so difficult not to use them, and when the design seems to force adoption” Librarians to the rescue (again)

The brightness of Betelgeuse changes periodically. For decades astronomers had suspected that some of these variations could be due to a companion star orbiting around it. Now, the VLT has captured the clearest image ever of Betelgeuse B, a faint star orbiting Betelgeuse. 🔭 🧪 2/4
