I remember being awed by it as a child and then going back as an adult after graduating from Harvard and realizing how much worse it was than Harvard, which is really saying something

Having grown up with UK classism, it ironically makes me more sympathetic because I can see how much she’s stepping out of what she was trained for and mostly I want to be encouraging about that because the intention is there

The academic space she came from is … well let’s just say Oxbridge makes Harvard look deeply egalitarian. So in context, she’s comparatively like a rabid leftist.

The sad part is that she’s unusual for even trying and it’s one reason she gets so much hate

One of my issues with her discussion about enslavement in her Odyssey intro is that she’s too uncomfortable with race to pull it off. Her intentions are better here than other translators who simply don’t care to engage. I think she wanted to say mammy trope but couldn’t pull it off.

She has a whole section on this in her intro to The Odyssey and I disagree with her conclusions about how to handle it but she’s right that the shift away from “slave” is a softening of the political and social reality of the language. & it matters for example when discussing sex/consent.
