Right, one of the talking point I keep hearing is “but there are ALREADY data centers. Do you oppose those?” And, well, no? Because the current amount is reasonable. A modest increase would also most likely be reasonable. The exponential increase is bad because of its size, scale, and impact.

Data centers are about political power and one must appreciate @davekarpf.bsky.social cutting to the chase and just saying that loud and clear. You can debate the ifs, and hows, and whys...just don't forget its about who has power and what they want with it. davekarpf.beehiiv.com/p/the-data-c...

I'm reading the "environmentalists are wrong about data centers" piece from the NYT and ohmygoditssofuckingbad. Apparently, so long as you're punching left, they'll just let you say any goddamn thing you please... www.nytimes.com/2026/07/25/o...

And, again: golf courses and flat lawns and monocropping agribusiness practices are ALSO BAD. *More Than One Thing Can Be Bad*!
Dave Karpf"Even if the number of data centers increases tenfold, we may still end up using less water on artificial intelligence than we use [to water our lawns/golf courses]." Hi, quick question: the hyperscalers are planning to spend like $7 trillion building datacenters. It that a lot or a little?
If your response to the data center backlash is "oh no, those poor hyperscalers! People are using inexact data in their arguments against OpenAI and Grok. Everyone should just let them proceed with their buildouts and focus instead on PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY," then you're either a grifter or a mark.

I worked at Disney a while ago. Do you know why theme parks are so safe? Because OOSHA reps can walk the track on any ride at any time and any safety violation they see is a $10,000 fine. Each. Theme parks are not safe because the company cares. They're safe because it's cheaper to comply.
Jon of The NorthTurns out that food companies were only checking their food because the government told them to, which is exactly why we need government regulations.
