A new pre-print has explored, through simulations, how radio frequency interference will scale over several years at the sight of one of the planned radio telescopes. The simulations show that with shielding, some mitigation helps from intended emissions. But the risk is unintended emissions. 🔭

These are all excellent reasons for wanting Betelgeuse to go boom, but I've now become more appreciative of Orion the constellation, and how this would ruin it. BUT -- I still want science and the cosmic fireworks. So ... a solution: LET'S SACRIFICE ETA CARINA. ⭐💥 NO ONE CARES ABOUT ETA CARINA.

scientific reasons of course are MANIFOLD. That booger's gonna be bright enough to see in daytime. We'd get so much data on the explosion itself, envelope dynamics, neutrino emissions, and maybe even gravitational waves (please gravitational waves).

Oops. Did it again. 😉 SPHERE at the VLT and Betelgeuse are a great combination for nice results ! Thanks to all the team who contributed to this result, and to the people @eso.org who collected the data.
