What blows my mind with AI is the people who are like "how could you possibly function without it?" To which I say, "you, YOU literally did until what like 3 years ago? Did it degrade your brain that fast that you can't figure out how to do the thing you trained for years and earned a PhD to do?"
Brendan KeoghSurely the solution here is just *don't use AI tools* for your writing and research and continue to do your writing and research in ALL the ways you were doing it before you started using AI instead of doing the work??

I really enjoyed the thoughtfulness of this. they are not saying don’t watch or ‘action movie BAD!’ —nice critique in the literary way. I’m a literary history PhD. Do you know how many critiques of Dickens I’ve written? And I love Dickens, even at his worst. Criticism can be enlightening and fun.
EMILY WILSONI wrote about the Nolan Odyssey for the LRB. I'll summarize some of my main points below, in case you don't feel like reading all that. www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

I actually earnestly love that everyone's talking about The Odyssey & translations & adaptations & cinema, & talking about the ways in which we discuss those things; I love seeing thoughtful people thinking together in public, building on each other's knowledge & perspectives! however,

When I said, "You have to be a self-loathing sociopathic narcissist with Agamemnon’s ambition and Oedipus’s hubris to attempt to make a film of The Odyssey, and my goodness did Christopher Nolan go for it," I meant that shit.
Dr. Vaughn JoyI wasn't planning to see The Odyssey because I was so mad about how egregiously Nolan explored similar themes in Oppenheimer, but my best friend (a Classics prof) encouraged me to see it, and I'm so glad she did. I loved it, and I finally realized why I hated Opp so much, so I wrote about both:

This is exactly what my work explains, how was it that giant grass eating bovines became the common food for several generations of Americans?
Dr. Jonathan FoleyBeef has a huge climate problem. And the most effective solution -- by far -- is to simply reduce beef consumption and waste. But we don't want to hear that, so we often welcome fuzzy greenwashing stories instead. In the end, however, the math doesn't seem to work. drawdown.org/insights/gre...
