My time volunteering with a Phillips Brook House program--becoming a big brother figure for a middle schooler in Boston's Mission Hill community--was one of the best parts by far of my @harvard.edu experience. Fuck the consultants who recommended this, & the administration for going along with it.

The latest, heartbreaking casualty of austerity & reorganization at my home institution: Phillips Brooks House was set up 126 years ago, in the recognition that community service could & should be central to undergraduate education. Now it's being dismantled. www.thecrimson.com/article/2026...

*standing up on the plane* Have you ever went over a friend's house to eat/And the food just ain't no good?/I mean the macaroni's soggy, the peas are mushed/And the chicken tastes like wood/So you try to play it off like you think you can/By saying that you're full

*standing up on the plane* Call me Ishmael. Some years ago--never mind how long precisely--having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen

When Joshua James was 10, his mother & sister perished in a shipwreck. Five years later, he joined his father & older brother at the Massachusetts Humane Society as a life-saver, a role he'd perform for the next 60 years--& that his wife & their son likewise performed. That & more in today's post! 🗃️

So for the next post in my Coast Guard sesquicentennial blog series, a trio of iconic individuals & moments that (along with the WWI events I highlighted in yesterday’s post) illustrate the Coast Guard doing what it does best: rescues! blackwhiteandread.com/july-30-2026...

Watching @gvaughnjoy.bsky.social navigate Microsoft Teams (!) among other 2026 challenges to launch the phenomenal first event in a new @northeastmla.bsky.social interdisciplinary multi- presenter book talk series.

Happy Thorstein Veblen Day & Henry Ford Day! I would never normally include a Nazi like Ford on the Memory Day Calendar, but the pairing with Veblen is too perfect to resist. memorydaycalendar.blogspot.com/p/july-nomin...

Those who don’t remember the past are indeed doomed to repeat it. The fascists are counting on it. But can we actually learn from our hardest histories instead? What do y’all think? 🗃️ @hcrichardson.bsky.social

I know it was 4000 news cycles ago, but earlier this month the administration released a 162-page attack on the Smithsonian, featuring an argument that the Chinese Exclusion Act wasn’t based on racism. That pissed me off. My new column on the white supremacist hate & violence that built to the Act.🗃️

FYI: A not-very-friendly but accurate Blueskier noted that the Baker twins likely didn't serve in the WWI Coast Guard, & I've added that to the text of the post. But still, so many fascinating & inspiring stories of the USCG in WWI, just a few years after its creation under that name!

The Coast Guard was formally created by the Coast Guard Act of 1915, & as I write in the next post in the Sesquicentennial blog series, its WWI service featured so many impressive & inspiring individuals & communities, stories & histories! blackwhiteandread.com/july-29-2026...

In 2013 I published a book entitled The Chinese Exclusion Act: What It Can Teach Us about America. Let's just say we have yet to learn any of those lessons, & right now are being "led" by folks explicitly arguing we should actively forget them. Here & always, I disagree. @hcrichardson.bsky.social

Considering History: Does Remembering Injustice Erase America’s True Story…or Help Us Better Understand It? | The Saturday Evening PostThe Chinese Exclusion Act was the culmination of decades of racist narratives, white supremacist hate, and exclusionary laws. Happy Daniel Callaghan Day! At a time when our armed forces have become pawns for a fascist & ludicrous "Department of War," it's even more important to remember their heroic figures & histories. memorydaycalendar.blogspot.com/p/july-nomin...

“A whale-ship was my Yale College and my Harvard.” That’s what Ishmael (& Herman Melville) tell us in Chapter 1 of Moby-Dick, & it’s remarkably parallel to the 30+ years that early Coast Guard cadets spent training on schooners sailing around the world. That & much more in today’s post! 🗃️

Ben Railton

So for the next post in my Coast Guard Sesquicentennial blog series, how both Moby-Dick & Herman Melville can help us contextualize the more than three decades of shipboard education provided by the US Revenue Cutter School of Instruction! @hesterblum.bsky.social @robdelaney.bsky.social
