Seeing every small business, be it a local restaurant, a moving company, whatever, all having AI logos and AI ads, really puts into perspective just how many artists are out of jobs now. All those little sustaining jobs where someone just needed a quick thing for $50 to $200 are just gone.

i know it achieves little to nothing but when i see it, i refuse to shop there. i will tell my friends to avoid it. i will send angry emails. an artist lost a paycheck and so will they

I don't trust anyone until they say they're 100% against AI. And I keep getting pie'd in the face with the opposite.

Taking away the art for a second, how tf do these people not know how to take a clear picture of their food and edit it on Photoshop and whatnot? That'd still save you a lot of effort and money of hiring people to draw it on a timeline and you'd be fine since photo editing software is universally-

Ответ для LyleBryan

-accepted and preferred in today's society now more than it was hated by traditional artists back then because it was digitial art they were making stuff with.

It's so disappointing. It makes me question all kinds of things about how people value art that I'm not fully able to put into words, but it scars something deep inside my soul. And SO many places do this now. It's like seeing a sign on every corner that just says "I hate you" over and over again.

Ответ для Owen Dennis: Infinity Train/Among Us Show creator

often feels like the people who value and wanna support artists the most are artists themselves. we're in a position of desperation to uplift each other while trying to keep ourselves afloat

Ответ для mkg (💥explodes)

I’d support more artists of I had the mean to :/

Ответ для mkg (💥explodes)

Kind of hard to do that when you don't have any money coming in.

Ответ для LonelyLupine

well, that's the dilemma of it all

Ответ для Owen Dennis: Infinity Train/Among Us Show creator

Its truly offensive on a deep level. It pisses me off so much. It feels like the world has become extremely hostile in just about every single aspect of public life. I swear it’s taking years off my life. Which if this is how its going to be maybe not the worst thing.

Ответ для Brandon Williams

Its because, on so many different levels it’s an insult to all life on earth.

Ответ для Selina

Yes

Ответ для Brandon Williams

Its so haunting when you have unobscured clarity into just how much other people truly hate, resent, or just don't care about you. Guess that's good to know at least? Its so piercingly clear that it kinda scares me. Like, how do you even respond to that? Especially when they're *so proud* of it?

Ответ для Vincent Becherer (BOARD ARTIST AVAILABLE FOR WORK!)

The absolute WORST thing is friends or family using it 🫠 “Oh, so you never did care about me or anything I do, nice to know”

Ответ для Queen Gwenevere

Yeah Ive been pretty lucky on that front. My parents are also very Catholic and the Pope has been a great help on the AI front lol

Ответ для Queen Gwenevere

My big prediction at this point, to a public that doesn’t value art, is things are going to go full circle with the rich. Having an AI draw for you will be “plebian” only suitable for the poor, and the working class. Hand made art will be authenticated and bragged about by the people who afford it.

Ответ для ratbat

Itl be The Diamond Age with the Neo Victorians all over again, getting their newspaper printed on hand made paper instead of a screen.

Ответ для Brandon Williams

I feel like this was always the point, tech fascism and AI are practically synonymous, the goal is always to either destroy or subsume art because artists are too subjective and progressive for them. AI never pushes back on their whims It'll pop eventually but right now it really sucks

God you’re so right

Ответ для Owen Dennis: Infinity Train/Among Us Show creator

People got used to getting shit for cheap and no longer value the effort put into it. I wonder if people realize how long a movie or video game or book actually takes to be made?!

Ответ для Dave M. 🇨🇦⚜️

They certainly do not 95% of the time, people got the attention spans of gnats when it comes to media. Doesn't help that production companies are forced into pretty strict NDAs (understandable in many ways but still) so the process is largely invisible to those outside the business.

Ответ для 🐍 Stormy / Cloud θΔ🐉

Particularly thinking about how quick people were to assume that the avatar movie used AI in the actual production or particularly for concept art. Certainly reasonable to ask questions when there's an officially endorsed panel mentioning AI, but like, movie's been in production for longer than that

Ответ для 🐍 Stormy / Cloud θΔ🐉

Man we used to get documentary, real documentary not ego-stroking fluff pieces, about how movies are made! Really put the work and artistry at the center. I have this French movie, Asterix Mission Cleopatre, that comes with a making-of longer than the movie itself! It’s amazing!

Ответ для Dave M. 🇨🇦⚜️

Incredibly true!! I love BTS stuff but it seems like it shifted to at best being broadcast on TV in the 2010s or so, speaking of course very broadly, and now just doesn't seem to be included at all. :( Would love to see that come back to DVD/Bluray copies of things. Or put it on streaming too idc!

Ответ для 🐍 Stormy / Cloud θΔ🐉

Maybe it would be too much blue screens and dudes in offices going ‘it’s rendering, wanna go get a pizza in the meantime?’ Or maybe they want to hide the horrible way VFX artists are treated

Ответ для Dave M. 🇨🇦⚜️

Plus a LOT of stuff is outsourced now, so a US-based producer outsourcing to studios and teams in other countries doesn’t even necessarily have any direct connection to the process, teams, or most of the production assets It was easier to capture process when it was all happening in one place

Ответ для Dave M. 🇨🇦⚜️

Disney used to include a real studio tour in one of their parks, where visitors could glimpse the actual work in progress! I think they long since replaced all that with some kind of fake breezy “studio tour” with much less real substance

Ответ для Queen Gwenevere

Oh no there’s no real studio tour anymore at Disney Hollywood Studios anymore. They mostly used the space for Galaxy’s Edge.

I hate that people see AI as the next tech step. It isn't. AI can't create art; it can only imitate it. ATMs made it easy for people to get cash, reducing teller jobs; they could do it just as well as a human. However, art is connected to human emotion, which is something else an AI can only imitate

Ответ для Owen Dennis: Infinity Train/Among Us Show creator

I think that it's almost unavoidable because companies have filled it in almost every space to be used and the more average person does not fully know how inaccurate it is and how it affects things. It is sad that unless they are more conscious and put effort for artists and not be cheap and lazy.

Ответ для Owen Dennis: Infinity Train/Among Us Show creator

seeing local vendors pull this shit while saying "support local!" like what are they even doing here

Ответ для UpChuckle

There's a few restaurants I'm avoiding now because they used AI art signs. Like, yeah, most of it is because of how dumb doing that is, but there's a part of it that's because the art they use makes the food look *disgusting*. Your best foot forward is an AI picture of a rotting burger? Really?

Ответ для Zendervai

taking a couple of semesters of graphic design to find out cramming as much text as possible over a food monstrosity is perfectly fine now

Ответ для Zendervai

it’s so insane on restaurants. you’ll see images of things that just don’t exist, pictures that include things they don’t even serve, and just the least appetizing approximations of stuff on the menu but without any way to know what it’ll actually be like. hate it

Ответ для hot karl rove

It always makes me want to go in, ask to see the manager and just go "that sign outside made me feel incredibly sick, the food on it looks disgusting and rotten and I don't understand why you would put that where everyone can see it." Honestly I should actually do that next time.

Ответ для Zendervai

it’s really tempting to do tbh!! it always ends up looking so weirdly … anatomical is the only word i can think of. that and/or covered in dirt. at least for meats and veg, fruits get weird in different ways. do they even look at what they generate? before they print and put it up?

Ответ для hot karl rove

You can just tell the managers are the type who would nitpick the shit out of everyone else.

Ответ для Zendervai

same people who were only paying 20-50 bucks for flyers/banner designs/etc and spending hours on endless fidgety revisions just shitting out absolutely whatever nightmares without a care in the world

Ответ для UpChuckle

This, incidentally, why I was always leery of any "shop local" campaign, because I know the people who run those businesses and the only difference between a small business a big business is that the big business is generally more competent.

Ответ для LonelyLupine

I like to support local because it's easier to get in touch with the business owner there than a more faceless corporate entity, but, yeah, anybody is capable of being in business for cynical reasons

Ответ для Owen Dennis: Infinity Train/Among Us Show creator

Yeah, all of this exactly. It feels so disrespectful, especially coming from small businesses. Everyone seems to have decided that artists are expendable while they use the tool built on all of our previous labor.

Ответ для Owen Dennis: Infinity Train/Among Us Show creator

I don't consider myself an artist per se, but it's been so demoralising to see the majority of people just go mask-off in admitting just how little they ever cared about the people whose skills they (apparently begrudgingly) relied on.

Ответ для Owen Dennis: Infinity Train/Among Us Show creator
F

It's revealing what was always the case, for most business owners its just a transaction, the artist was just a red number on a balance sheet, and you gotta remove those red numbers wherever you can

Similarly the small copywriting jobs for websites etc. No value attached to craft as opposed to slop.

AI can only generate by constantly consuming new material. If AI drives artists out of work and artists stop putting their work online out of self-protection, it may start eating its own tail due to lack of data and generate the same shit over and over again, which will suck for anyone who uses it.

Ответ для Audry T. ~ she/her

It's even worse: AI slop is everywhere and ends up in the learning cursus of AIs. When an AI "ingest" slop, it creates a kind of self-poisonning. medium.com/@olivia_7496...

AI editors got to the point where they buy random old books in bulk to scan them and even pay people to write stuff (those people are underpaid and end up using AI to write enough shit, compounding the problem)

Ответ для Dralasite

tl;dr AI can't subsist long term, it will degenerate sooner or later.

Ответ для Dralasite

Yeah even though I'm looking at with limited IT/programming knowledge, I think that's ultimately will happen.

Ответ для Audry T. ~ she/her

it was never meant for long term. its just a quick cash scam.

Ответ для Raptor

Eventually it will all come crashing down, wrecking our economy, leaving in its wake people who have lost the ability to think without a tool that no longer exists, and the people who funded this won't care. They already made their money. The rest of us can rot for all they care.

Ответ для PPL Comics - Volume 1 Available Now

thats the thing, they haven't even made their money yet. its why they are forcing it on us so hard. trying to normalize it enough to finally start earning a profit. they are hoping it goes green before the bubble bursts. so, the sooner the better.

Ответ для Raptor

My impression is this is bubble money, which is very different than having millions safely stowed away in a bank. I do think a crash would severely damage or even completely destroy the wealth of a majority of tech bros.

Ответ для Audry T. ~ she/her

That definitely explains why they're so desperate to force us to use it. Certainly Oracle is headed for a fall. My concern is that they'll find some way to squirm out of the consequences, especially with the current administration. That is what they pay him for.

I've learned that many people don't support the arts on a philosophical level. They don't see the purpose or value

I have a friend that works as a lifeguard at a Nike facility saw AI used for the graphic design for some stuff at the pool and convinced the management to let her design the stuff. Iirc they let her

I would literally rather have the person use public domain clip art or even if the owner drew a stick figure for a logo over anything AI generated

Ответ для DearestArsenic

I don't understand why people are avoiding public domain clip art. That's what it is for!

Ответ для 🕹️ algi 🇭🇺 🇪🇺

Even AI-generated clip art remixing existing clip art would be fine, if they only used public domain clip art as the training set and nothing else. But no, they had to be greedy and train the AIs with a bunch of blatantly stolen shit, and we let them do it.

Ответ для AtomicPwrdRobot

Except genAI models use tons of water & electricity & creates tons of noise & chemical pollution. I'm an artists & the plagerism is only like 5th on my list of reasons why I'm against genAI

Ответ для DearestArsenic

Very true, although I suspect the resource wastefulness comes from the same root causes. Namely engineers that fail to consider the social implications of the things they build, an industry that resists regulation, and governmental bodies that are always a decade or more behind on tech policy.

Ответ для AtomicPwrdRobot

I think gen AI as it is currently constituted is a fascist tool wielded by authoritarians to manipulate us, but I can also imagine a scenario where gen AI is nationalized and tamed through sensible regulation that addresses environmental and social impacts. We don't have it, but we could.

Ответ для AtomicPwrdRobot

I don't give a fuck if fascists or communists want to end the entirety of human culture.

Ответ для 🕹️ algi 🇭🇺 🇪🇺

Both in Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union at least some art and some education was allowed. This bullshit is putting an end to all of that. No more human decision making, no more creativity, no more learning, no more developing skills, everything that we understand under culture will end forever.

Ответ для 🕹️ algi 🇭🇺 🇪🇺

Good thing I'm not talking about communism then, just the good ol' mixed economy socialism that encourages the arts and sciences that conservatives keep telling you is communism.

Ответ для 🕹️ algi 🇭🇺 🇪🇺

Great news communists don't want to "end human culture" they just want to make sure everyone has the basics they need to survive (& if ensuring that everyone has food/shelter/water/healthcare "ends human culture" then it should end)

Ответ для Newbohemia.art-Cryptid

I’m amazed how all these companies are just soooooooooooo hesitant at hiring new talent. But now want to just spam away on their content, like they are first time Deviant Art fan artist trying to follow a hashtag!

Ответ для Victor Roa

And I hear their excuses, “I don’t know, we tend to hire during rush seasons.” Or “we go through an agency for that.” But now they want to just go buck wild on not even community college style graphic design! I’m just grinding my teeth here

Ответ для Victor Roa

no kidding, it's very gross! My friend and I have said we would rather see a flier written/drawn on lined paper by a non-regular-artist and photocopied at the library then an AI filter. At least SOMEONE put some sort of effort into it then! That sort of thing is quite fun!

Ответ для Newbohemia.art-Cryptid

Hehe, I grew up in New Jersey, so all the clubs were a bit too much. Too many fonts, too many filters all of them trying to steal the current pop culture trends and printed onto glossy paper…. Because nothing grabs attention than shiny! Hehe

Ответ для Victor Roa

I used to like the local music live houses fliers. They were often made with a combo of hand-made art and magazine clippings pasted all together and then photocopied and sent out.

Ответ для Newbohemia.art-Cryptid

leave bad reviews for all of them.

Ответ для Raptor

honestly, good idea. I leave reviews for stuff all the time. Leaving the review with the photo of a flier is a good idea. Some people may not care, but there is plenty of people who will care too!!

Ответ для Newbohemia.art-Cryptid

I recently worked at an establishment that even used AI to generate the MENU (guess how many items were missing ingredients.... we were supposed to use it as a reference for item builds...) and every time a new bad review hit the staff would cheer because management kept doubling down with the slop

Ответ для sherm

yikes that is brutal and potentially dangerous if menu ingredients are missing. What if people have allergies???!

I’m taking time now to let favourite brands know this devalues their brand and is off putting to customers. #Enshittification

It is so disheartening, they'll say "Please support our small bussiness! We all have to support each other" while it feels like they've just spat on artists, like they of all people should know how important that 50-200 commission is worth to a SMALL BUSINESS.

Ответ для Fish Problems - Team Comedy 🎭

If only they knew that they can put that 200 commission as an expense when doing taxes, that'll help them save a bit of money too :3

Every time a small business uses GenAI for their advertisement instead of giving it to a niece or nephew who kind of likes to draw, they rob themselves of the possibility of getting something accidentally iconic. Nobody would give a shit about the Happy Foot/Sad Foot sign if it were AI

Ответ для Bryan Wong

TRUTH.

Ответ для Bryan Wong

A lot of artists are willing to barter for the product or service the merchant sells. So even the relatively small up-front investment from the merchant is still a decent payday to the artist.

Like where's the solidarity

That’s what happens when they see every business online constantly saying “you can save money with ai! Use it or be left behind!”. To them, the service of their business matters more than graphics. They don’t know or don’t care, that it will cost their brand identity or customers.

I live in a city with one of the top art colleges in the US and I STILL see local businesses cheaping out with generative ai. It's frustrating!

If you don’t have the money to pay a person and your stuff looks like this I’m not shopping there.

technology is a bitch in the 60's my older sister was a long distance phone operator before tech invented direct calling and put her out of a job

Ответ для fl-anjet

Reducing it to this isnt doing the discussion any favors.

Ответ для fl-anjet

This is not the same. Direct calling is useful and that technology was an important advancement that had more positive impact than negative. AI is destroying the environment, convincing people to kill themselves and others, spreading misinformation, making people homeless... It's killing us.

Ответ для ✧.* foxgh0st

So unfortunately comparing it to direct calling is... very tone deaf and inappropriate, to put it politely.

Ответ для ✧.* foxgh0st

stop your whining

Ответ для fl-anjet

The fallacy here is that there is always another job to be found, a job that has the same pay and forward mobility as the one that is lost. This is not true with AI. People are being pushed out of "white-collar" work across almost all industries by AI. Only dead-end manual labor jobs remain.

Ответ для Grumpy__Dev

dead end labor jobs ? have you ever hired a plumber, electrician, carpenter, auto mechanic etc...?

Ответ для fl-anjet

compared to the jobs AI is replacing either directly or indirectly via general productivity boosts, yes. Skilled trades can pay decent, but there is not as much upward mobility to them. Most plumbers stay plumbers for their entire career. Also, skilled trades are hell on the body.

Ответ для Grumpy__Dev

AI may replace Hollywood screenwriters ..what upward mobility do they have, most screenwriters are on food stamps ...wishing they had a skill like plumbing to fallback on instead of waiting tables in between gigs

Ответ для fl-anjet

this ain't the 60's

Ответ для Raptor

well, duh!

Ответ для fl-anjet

Direct calling was an improvement, gen AI and LLMs are not. A monotonous job made redundant by new technology does not compare to stealing the work of artists and creatives and then using this to destroy their livelihood, while guzzling gross amounts of much needed electricity and water.

All it tell me is that they don't care enough to put any real effort into their business.

It's actually discouraging and disheartening how much art is becoming an unsustainable career now. Everyone is too poor to commission artists and everyone is resorting to AI. We are in a very anti artist era and it's making me feel like my work isn't good enough.

I literally walked away from a shop this week when I noticed one of their signs was AI. We should be abandoning places that abandon humanity.

And this is how the lived in environment of the public is transformed into the narrow style of the same algorithmic method by a handful of companies. We see the same exact shit, everywhere we look.

they should all be boycotted.

As an unemployed creative, can confirm. There's no fucking freelance to be had, for love or money

It's extra bizarre when they had a perfectly good logo already, but changed it to AI just because. I talked to an older graphic designer who had a long-time client feed their art into the AI machine to generate new stuff. These businesses are tanking decades long relationships with this, too.

Referring to it as ai slop was doing damage. Yes, I do think less of places that uses ai.

The use of AI really just speaks "We have no true identity or fucks to give" at volume, I can't ever bring myself to patron any place that is about cheating and short cuts. Hard to not suspect that line of thinking would extend to their products.

Yeah, those types of jobs helped get me through college and the early days of my career, and even recently those kinds of jobs could help fill in gaps between larger gigs But those jobs started dwindling with the onset of widely available stock art, and now genAI is killing whatever was left 🫠

Pretty soon those local restaurants will have chefbots, cookbots, dishwasherbots, and waiterbots, with perky maitre’d’bots to greet you (after performing mandatory iris and facial-recognition scans on everyone in your party). Of course the food will taste like moldy cardboard, but, hey! Progress! 🤷‍♂️

I’m at the tail end of a 44-yr career as a graphic designer and I’m glad I’m not just starting out as a new art school grad. Technology advances put the vast majority of old school typesetters & type service bureaus out of business 30 yrs ago, and now it’s hit designers & illustrators.

Ответ для bluestatedon

This isn't even a tech advance. It consistently looks worse, weird, and just wrong. You can tell so easily. Its just that because its one button press they accept the garbage no matter how picky they are otherwise with their designer

However it also added another cap, responsibility to business owners. Also I wanna add do employees get paid extra to make content of the business for their employers? Is that part of hospitality now?

I’m at the point where i just refuse to use small businesses if they use ai in their signage. It’s hypocritical and just grosses me out.

Not just that but how often they're willing to use even shoddy AI. Had customers giving me unusable AI adverts with incorrect details, missing information or even illegible text. Even when offering my graphic designs services to correct them 3 times out if 4 they'll just demand them printed.

When I see an AI slop poster all I can think is "what else don't they care about?" I went to the gun range and this gunsmith had one posted and I was like "if he doesn't care about the images and layout of his poster, how can I trust he won't make my handgun amputate my fingers?"

Ответ для Roland Guiscard

Yeah, this “Eat at Joesss Bubgers! The besf bungregs in town” [picture of eldritch burger-type abomination] Yeah no, if the burgers are the same quality as the advertising, I’m not going NEAR that place (and might not be able to find it anyway, if the address is nonsense-garble)

It makes me want to vandalize them

The trend of slapping "this is AI" stickers on shitty little signs and fliers and ads has been giving me at least some absolution lol

For our little business everyone from our consultant to friends said "just use AI for that" at so many stages from concept development to art design. Its wild.

I worked for a client where I kept pressing them for the original vectors of their logo so I could render it in various dimensions, and they finally admitted there *are* no original vectors because they generated their logo with ChatGPT. *sigh*

At my printing job I see so much slop come through. Sometimes I prod the issue, ask if the customer would pay for a few hours of design work so I can convert the art to a vector that will scale to any size and last forever. Some do... A lot don't. They just want the cheapest option at every point.

Most ppl are struggling financially these days. And ppl will do anything to save a few $, but ironically it comes at the COST of enabling the very institution that deprives EVERYONE of livable wages, so that the few (1%) can hoard.

Ответ для MMWoodcock

It's strategic. Truly small businesses are not aware of free resources or how to separate legit common license images from restricted images. AI has been shoved into every corner putting it at their fingertips. Sadly ppl take the easiest route for them even if the consequences are dire for others.

I do feel like some of this is also tied into Microsoft making its office suite a subscription. A lot of these types of things used to use clip art from Word (thinking menus, posters, etc, not logos as much). Small businesses just want a quick thing to use, and AI is being used instead of clip art.

Ответ для Paula

So there are definitely a fair number of cases where it isn't necessarily an artist missing out on a job, since clip art is a "hole" it's filling, but it still sucks to see because AI is trained on stolen art, plus the environmental impacts etc. Definitely still lost work for artists though, too.

Ответ для Paula

Except that even clip art used to be a job for artists (for any newer images not borrowed from old public domain sources, somebody had to make that clip art) It wasn’t an especially high-paying job, mind you, but it WAS a job, and it’s gone too, now 🙃

Ответ для Queen Gwenevere

Oh, for sure, just not an individual job for each little thing. It really bums me out how unwilling our society is to pay for art, despite benefiting from it and wanting it everywhere. :(

Ответ для Paula

Yeah, the illustration field started degrading sometime around the 90’s, and stock art was one of the first things to really start peeling away existing jobs 🙃 (Although there was still at least the possibility of licensing art to stock companies, and with AI there isn’t even anything like that)

“You cant even tell” like no we just dont go to your places cus its obvious as shit

a little $50 commission has saved my hide and given me the ability to eat something more than ramen, or let me keep lights on in my house. I'm privileged enough to have people I can ask for help, I just don't like to, but I cannot imagine how stressful life has gotten for those who don't have that
