Seeing every small business, be it a local restaurant, a moving company, whatever, all having AI logos and AI ads, really puts into perspective just how many artists are out of jobs now. All those little sustaining jobs where someone just needed a quick thing for $50 to $200 are just gone.

I do feel like some of this is also tied into Microsoft making its office suite a subscription. A lot of these types of things used to use clip art from Word (thinking menus, posters, etc, not logos as much). Small businesses just want a quick thing to use, and AI is being used instead of clip art.

So there are definitely a fair number of cases where it isn't necessarily an artist missing out on a job, since clip art is a "hole" it's filling, but it still sucks to see because AI is trained on stolen art, plus the environmental impacts etc. Definitely still lost work for artists though, too.

Except that even clip art used to be a job for artists (for any newer images not borrowed from old public domain sources, somebody had to make that clip art) It wasn’t an especially high-paying job, mind you, but it WAS a job, and it’s gone too, now 🙃

Oh, for sure, just not an individual job for each little thing. It really bums me out how unwilling our society is to pay for art, despite benefiting from it and wanting it everywhere. :(

Yeah, the illustration field started degrading sometime around the 90’s, and stock art was one of the first things to really start peeling away existing jobs 🙃 (Although there was still at least the possibility of licensing art to stock companies, and with AI there isn’t even anything like that)
