A long time ago it was alleged by some very knowledgeable Marxist comrades I used to know that LotR is kind of racist because Tolkien himself described Orcs as "degraded and repulsive versions of the (to Europeans) least lovely Mongol-types." But I wouldn't know. I'm allergic to Hobbit lore.

Worth a note: in response to criticism that Dwarves carried anti-Jewish stereotypes, Tolkien took that seriously and expanded massively on their lore to minimize and eliminate their presence. Tolkien wasn't just a good storyteller but, when prompted to, deftly addressed the problems in his lore.

I recall one being referred to as "nut-brown", at some point. But the joke is that Hobbits themselves eventually lose their cultural identity anyway and interbreed with humans and just become part of broader "humanity", but that's distant future in setting.

My understanding is this story isn't canon anyway, it's extrapolated from the legendarium. So extrapolate some variation. Also, you're not using hobbit actors anyway, so might as well use humans as they are: you know, 85% not white.

Hobbits are literally, explicitly a multiethnic society. The Shire was settled by three distinct groups of Hobbits - the Stoors, the Harfoots, and the Fallowhides. Harfoots are explicitly described as being brown.

Not even historically accurate, if you take LoTR as proxy for "long long ago." We know the ancient inhabitants of what's now Britain, having recently migrated, retained darker skin and blue eyes for several millennia. Paler skin is a very recent development. www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/a...

Everyone overlooked the fact that Lenny Henry is from Dudley, which is (or rather, was) very much in Hobbit country. I'm probably the only person outside the Rings of Power crew and cast who gets that joke.

Tolkien's works are translated into over 35 languages, which philologist Tolkien loved. Nothing made him happier than working with translators on the best equivalent for "witch-king," etc. While Tolkien riffed on pre-Christian Germanic myth, his stories were universal, and so should casting.

People are attached to this idea that The Shire represents England, so it must have a lily-white Anglo-Saxon demographic. 🙄 If having an ethnically diverse cast is a barrier to your ability to suspend your disbelief, then you have some other issues to work out.
