It's a smear campaign by the insurance companies to try to make you hesitant about being properly represented. Of course they don't want you to have a lawyer. Lawyers know what your rights are and what you're entitled to!

Something I've talked about elsewhere is that the class action lawsuits "we" win tend to give us something very low in compensation. Generally, a fast food meal or two. While the company who harmed us pays out very little as a proportion of their revenue. (continued)

Corporations want you to see a bunch of lawsuits and think "those greedy lawyers are at it again!" What you SHOULD be asking is why Congress didn't legislate on that issue. Whose interests were they protecting by not acting? WHY are the courts the only avenue left?

And seeing as the courts can only really award money, they're not the best for this sort of thing.

And sure, there are frivolous lawsuits, as there are anywhere. But typically speaking, when a bunch of lawsuits start popping up in a given area - from asbestos to cigarettes to social media - it's generally a sign that lawmakers punted or ignored an issue, and all that's left is the courts.

THAT'S why we have more lawsuits: they're literally the primary means of consumer regulation in the US. So lawsuits, like the ones against Big Tech, are often less about greedy trial lawyers and more a story of regulatory failure.

Remember: Data show the US isn't actually more litigious than any other country. Instead, we're underregulated relative to other countries, because corporations keep telling lawmakers that courts and lawsuits will do the job that regulations are supposed to do.

I get that. It's just easy to fall into that trap from the binary thinking we're all stuck with.

I wrote about this in my first book, but historically "ambulance chasers" and "tort reform" are corporate propaganda used by industry lobbies angry that their "the courts will regulate us so Congress doesn't need to" line resulted in actual lawsuits. 12/12

When there are no regulations because you said the courts will suffice, this is what happens. So the real lesson here is WE NEED A COMPREHENSIVE DATA PRIVACY LAW. Big Tech is actually getting exactly the regulation they asked for. 11/

Also, US law in this area is decades behind the rest of the world. Big Tech companies have spent millions arguing that they don't need regulations because lawsuits will serve that function. That argument has been made by lobbyists from multiple industries for decades. And guess what? 10/
