Art is vital to our lives. So is insightful criticism of that art. It's great! But you know what happens if you clutch a beloved thing too hard for too long? Your hand cramps up, and soon holding it is more painful than any pleasure the object gave you. Just chill, like, 10% of the time.

It'll sound like heresy, but the antidote to a lot of this is to take both art and criticism *just a little* less seriously. Our virtue doesn't ride on every stranger's sentence. Discussing the arts is what we do with friends. I couldn't survive if I read with my guard up 24/7.
BODY-FOCUSED REPETITIVE BEHAVIOR (BFRB) Impulse-control behaviors involving compulsively damaging one's physical appearance or causing physical injury. Associated with OCD, ADHD, and anxiety. Can be focused on skin, mouth, nails, nose, hair, and/or eyes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body-fo...
Skin picking is common for Autists. Many of us use it as a stim, which growing up was likely less noticeable, than stims we’d get in crap for. It’s reinforcing, too, as once you start, the more you want to keep going to try and even it out. Can you relate? #autistic #audhd #skinpicking #stimming
Heck I only learned about the term BFRB *last year*. (Body-focused repetitive behavior). Literally just grew up assuming my nail picking/biting was due to anxiety, or stress, or boredom. Meanwhile people see gnarly fingernails and assume you're a terrible person or a slob, so that's been Fun.
