Tbh he was already a much better character by their second trilogy, which serves as a great coda for his story arc. It's just really noticeable in the Lost Chronicles because they take place in between the books of the first trilogy.

Tanis acquits himself much better in Dragons of the Dwarven Depths than in the original Chronicles trilogy, probably because Weis and Hickman have had a couple decades to improve as writers. He's far less mopey and indecisive.
