Yglesias is connected enough in lefty media to know that he’s lying here. the idea that there’s significant money to be made pandering to the left is ridiculous.

The only person this could POSSIBLY describe is hasan, and regardless of whether one thinks he panders to the young left, he's probably the most popular political streamer in the world, so how unrepresentative can that audience be? And compared to what?

Matty G is proof there’s at least one person dumber and less self-aware than he is… whoever pays him. It’s like a right wing psyop.

The man has no integrity. He’s bought. He stands for nothing real.

He can make $20 if he can find the internet leftist that's holding the mutual aid.

plenty of clout in it, maybe - but if there's a way to pay the bills with clout i haven't heard about it yet

Shocked when I, a communist environmentalist, am not having my YouTube channel showered in oil and tech oligarch money.

In fact, when someone finds a small niche where they manage to do so, it's treated like the end of the world

I got into an argument here with a former republican who was mad that people like Sam Seder weren't spreading the wealth. Meanwhile literally every right wing project he'd worked on was funded by some billionaire. Like every right winger all the way back to Rush Limbaugh.

Ответ для Buchman

There are no Ulines dumping billions into lefty podcasts.

And this is why I stopped listening to Pod Save America

Weird how few leftist progrssives get permanent gigs as opinion columnists in major corporate publications.

legitimately believe that matty is the kind of person dumb enough to convince himself to believe his own lies

I find it odd when commentators who previously couldn't shut up about the immense power of incentives and the power of bad groups to create bad incentives suddenly hold that THEIR incentives are immaterial.

kinda ironic considering that yglesias’ entire livelihood is telling older, out-of-touch, never-leave-the-district centrists what they want to hear

I don’t think he’s ever said anything that wasn’t snotty enough to have plausible deniability as a “joke” if he needed it to be

Show us the WhatsApp group where you all roast him repeatedly

I’ve read just a little bit about the ENORMOUS amount of money the far right spends on influencers, especially young women. There is no equivalent on the left. (And should there be? It’s very icky to think of how much political content is just marketing, but maybe that’s the game we have to play.)

Ответ для Dr. Susan G (she/her)

It is valuable for people to talk about leftist ideas in public, so yes, it would be better if it was well-paid.

Many of the more awful people in podbro confirmation bias complex like BrieBrie do seem to be doing pretty well out of it.

Big claim from a guy who has Crystal Shrek Money

if there was significant money to be made pandering to us wouldn’t he be doing that

Ответ для that’s “mr bitch” to you

The free market requires it.

I bet you posted this while on the 5-4 company helicopter.

The powerful group of pro-socialist billionaires

Ответ для Mike O'Malley

Soros went “damn, the Nazis sucked, let’s spend a little cash to never do that again” and he’s been the conspiracy boogie man for decades!

Ответ для Madness Table

I’m not even especially pro-Soros, he just realized it‘s more chill to be a billionaire if you’re not always always worried about getting pogrommed. Meanwhile, every modern billionaire thinks consequences are fake and gay and is dead certain he‘ll be the one to smart his way out of the camps.

The Macedonians figured this out when doing junk news sites. They got way more ad click-thru with right-wing sites. If that's not proof, the DNC has mortgaged their headquarters.

I read the episode title and unsubscribed. Will the Dems ever get tired of losing elections?

N

this is literally a tucker carlson talking point, like somehow its eddington and soros is spending billions on antifa

The right knows no tool other than to accuse those of what they are themselves guilty of

One might even argue he made a conscious decision to move rightward following the money.

I'm always confused when people act like there's more money to be made opposing capitalism rather than supporting it, as if the beneficiaries of the system haven't vampire-sucked away most of the wealth and amassed comparatively virtually infinite resources for their propaganda campaigns.

Ответ для Josh Crowley (@jdcrowley)

Same with climate change: how on earth would the opposing camp have more money for propaganda than fuckin' oil companies?? No climate scientist is becoming a billionaire, but oil execs/investors sure are. But people will say "follow the money" and mean "…to climate scientists." Failure to think.

Ответ для Josh Crowley (@jdcrowley)

I’m regrettably familiar enough with the latter thinking to know that the missing piece of that conspiracy is control over all energy. The climate change hoax is supposedly about seizing and consolidating power globally, and harbingers of the NWO are pumping money to climate science for that end.

Hey, if you’ve got a better explanation for why Amnesty International supports trans people, JK Rowling would like to hear it

I think he's so cooked he thinks that's what Pod Save America is doing.

They're in the same office as the trans lobby

*taps the “education has separated from class” sign for the hundredth time* Yeah young educated lefties, notoriously a group with tons of disposable income

Jokes on us, the "strong financial incentive" throughout the media he's talking about is: don't you fucking do it, you will become homeless and blacklisted.

I feel like you're being really dismissive of the nine AMERICAN dollars I give your podcasts EVERY MONTH.

The fact that there's a pretty distinct lack of *good* lefty media options proves this.

Ответ для Rebecca Ruth Seidel

My quest to find a solid news podcast that's not full of men who minimized and dismissed intimate partner violence for the sake of a possible senate win while also covering current events in a way that feels sane to me has been pretty bleak.

Ответ для Rebecca Ruth Seidel

Cool Zone Media’s slate of shows is pretty awesome. Can’t say it’s bleakness free, considering the times we are in, but it’s fun.

Ответ для toomanysteves

I'll check it out!

Ответ для Rebecca Ruth Seidel

Oh! And if the medical side is more your thing, @kavehmd.bsky.social “The House of Pod” is my go to. Dr. Hoda just released an episode about Pete Hegseth’s low-T policies for the DoD. He’s very warm and has bunch of medical experts on to make the science very understandable.

Ответ для Rebecca Ruth Seidel

At Cool Zone Media, start with It Can Happen Here. - On Fridays they do Executive Disorder which is a weekly wrapup of the news. I never miss this. - Mon-Thurs are various in depth topics. - Saturday is the whole week in a single episode.

Ответ для toomanysteves

🤘🤘

Ответ для toomanysteves

I've had to bolt on recent Executive Disorder episodes (for the unfamiliar, a series tucked inside CZM's It Could Happen Here podcast), because there's just too much bleakness out there. Some weeks, the gang can tease out funny bits or focus on ridiculous happenings, but recently, it's been rough.

Ответ для Derek of the Edmund Fitzgerald

While bleak isn't great, I prefer bleak to news shows that just cover what's happening like it's regular news to get reported on rather than... really, really bad.

Ответ для Rebecca Ruth Seidel

absolutely, I prefer the brutal honesty of CZM coverage over and above national news normalizing the horrors

Ответ для Derek of the Edmund Fitzgerald

Understandable! The world is how the world is and there’s nothing wrong with hitting your limit on awful news.

Ответ для Rebecca Ruth Seidel

Seconding Cool Zone Media, specifically It Could Happen Here

bring back tar and feathering.

One of the biggest problem of "the left" as a whole is that there is very little money on this side of the political divide.

"What they want to hear" is a euphemism for "I get paid to convince people this is the preferred option"

Curious - he sounds exactly like a bog standard wingnut about this. I wonder why? Anyone on the left giving him the time of day is deeply misguided, at best.

If there was significant money to be made pandering to the left Matty would be doing it.

I'm a socialist because of the money $ocialis$sm

It’s part of a chronic problem! Nobody has any money! The ad people even know that.

Both Ezra and Matt went to shit after vox success. In the beginning they were cool and hammering policy and digging into awesome topics. Now… garbage.

if there were hed be doing it

Ответ для John OKAY Keynes

That's the big tell. The man is a financial windsock.

I want my left wing checks I’ve been doing this for free for a decade now

Yeah. I could see an argument about audience capture happening once you've already built a substantial lefty audience, but that's a risk of any established audience and may even be less true of many lefty audiences.

i mean i agree but also you don't have to be "connected in lefty media" to rub two braincells together and surmise there's no billionaires juicing lefty media. there's small donor microcelebrities and not really anything higher on the hierarchy

he means Hasan and nobody else.

Ответ для Neal Dusedau

Hasan doesn't do sponsorships or ads and his content is free. He turned down a 1 day sponsorship worth 7 figuresand goes against gambling + crypto. If he was a right winger or Centrist the guy would have been given a 100 million dollar Kick deal years ago.

Ответ для Burk

I understand that completely, but since there is no one getting rich from sponsorships on the left, I'm assuming he meant Piker, as he's the only rich guy it's possible to point to in the space.

Ответ для Neal Dusedau

Yeah you're right that's who he means, but as usual Matty is completely wrong.

Ответ для Neal Dusedau

There's also currently a coordinated attempt by both centrist dem media and Fox News at reheating the Bernie Bros narrative by painting the left as exclusively college-educated white dudes despite all the evidence to the contrary.

Ответ для Jimmy Eat Arby's

The DSA/DSA-esque candidates do much better with white than Black voters.

Ответ для noirtiervillefort

Bro they say this shit about black candidates.

I pander to the left with my posting and it makes me no money. but I get other things* out of it >:) *it also destroys my mental and physical health.

We all saw the Shrek crystal. Clearly there are dozens, if not hundreds of dollars to be made.

There would be several Bari's Weiss of the left if yglesias were right about this

Pretty ironic considering Matty Y's entire career is built on pandering to monied interests who pay him handsomely to tell rich centrists that their niche belief system held by almost no one is actually very good and popular

Ответ для Lane Hutson Enjoyer

He has subscribers. I think very few are billionaires.

one thing i’d be interested in hearing from, e.g., Ashley St. Clair, is whether she was surprised by how much less money there is on the left once she got there

Ответ для Peter

Why would there be any money in Anti-Capitalism though?

Ответ для Fitzy

That's the oil Hypothesis, isn't it? Big Science is taking cash to convince us global warming is real, and only a plucky group of oil tycoons stand against that greed.

Ответ для Peter

Wait, you don't get a weekly 6-figure ACH from Leon Neyfakh?

Ответ для Jeremy Chao

yeah but I’m a moderate

Ответ для Peter

Somehow the right has been able to convince a significant portion of people to think there’s a such thing as “big environmental”. The tree huggers are paid by Greenpeace who have billions!

Ответ для Jawndoe

The left needs to reckon with the fact that the right does not live in reality. They believe in a secret, ultra-generous welfare system for blacks and immigrants, no-go zones, cults transing children, and snow-crash brain viruses that make you woke.

Ответ для Peter

At most, leftist streamers can make serious money, and those would indeed earn more from donations, the more 'radical' they appear. Still, I'd doubt that this makes up the comparative loss in sponsoring and ad revenue.

Ответ для Peter

get her on the pod bros @michaelhobbes.bsky.social

Ответ для Peter

there are people who make serious money on the left, but the ecosystem just has less money flowing around overall. there are streamers and podcasts and YouTube channels doing well, but you won't peel back the curtain and find 6 figure investments from partisans like you do on the right

Ответ для Peter

No whales

Ответ для Peter

I mean the long-running joke is that the left is handing around the same $5 via various patreons, ko-fis, etc.

Ответ для Peter

One of the big problems here is that a ton of the right-wing money ecosystem is not glamorous for its recipients

Ответ для karl rove knausgård

People often seem to think what we’re talking about here is the guys like Yglesias who are at the top and probably making millions, and guys like that do actually exist in limited numbers on both sides

Ответ для karl rove knausgård

the big money difference is the small army of hillsdale graduates living off $40K/year jobs at the hitler institute for economic and racial development in a group home with seven other guys in DC

Ответ для karl rove knausgård

if you haven’t seen this up close it is kind of difficult to imagine but it is a drastic, drastic difference in the talent pipeline that is powered entirely by billionaire money that simply doesn’t exist for the left

Ответ для Peter

It’s almost like the fascist oligarchs that fund the right wing don’t have any interest in funding their enemies.

Ответ для Peter

I always think about how Rod Dreher literally had one patron who was paying his whole salary, who then got spooked and pulled out after the legendary “primitive root wiener” piece

Ответ для Peter

Fewer megawealthy kooks on the left.

Ответ для Peter

People on the left who make money actually have to cultivate an audience and incentivize them to donate individually (this includes both honest travelers and grifters) Whereas the center/right basically have standing tenured positions to shower people with money along with, frankly, more grifters.

Ответ для Peter

It’s common sense really. Rich dipshits are who back all these people and most of the rich dipshits are right wingers

Ответ для Peter

I can't think of anything even resembling Rod Dreher at The American Conservative where just one donor was paying his salary.

Ответ для Peter

Rich Dems need to fund media ops.

Ответ для Peter

The difference is even crazier the further down you go. Low level Centrists/Conservatives pull in more money than a ton of huge leftists.

Ответ для Peter

maybe this is ego talking, but i’ve had two popular left-leaning podcasts for several years now and never once has anyone reached out to us looking to invest, help expand, etc. there’s just no infrastructure for that on the left.

Ответ для Peter

I mean, that's the whole unspoken reason behind Citizens United. The conservatives justices know the right has tons of money to burn on propaganda and the left can't match it.

Seems like this would be a pretty straightforward bit of media studies research to do, but oddly it seems there's no money for that, either

Ответ для Peter

Surely this is why all their content is so bad, though? Left media has to be actually good to find an audience. Right wing dipshits just have to say things that rich people like.

Thanks for the reminder that life is incredibly unfair.

@stephaniemiller.bsky.social always talks about how, early in her radio career, she was told if she went conservative she could make a fortune.

Ответ для Peter

She really thought that the money was going to start rolling in when she started to talk about Elon being a weirdo on left leaning podcasts.

Ответ для Peter

I thought I was jaded about the amount of money that the right doles out, but it was a surprise when she said how much & to how many! Absolutely ghoulish.
