I'm very sorry but no. Anthropic is buying all books because they can't just digital copies -- this was the result of several decades of copyright cases and their own (where they used a digital archive that had been pirated and got into trouble). There's no project to shred rare, orphaned books.

This is nonsense. Libraries, bookstores, charities all shred books they can't sell constantly. Anthropic is literally buying books from these sources!

For that kind of behavior you could see various bizarre NFT bro scams to buy and destroy rare art and sell I guess cryptographic tokens of that art. Not what's happening here!

Rare books are handled with care and without damage/non-destructively. In general deals with libraries or owners had incredibly strong contractual controls for this, with indemnities if it happened.

I also worked on Google Book search on the netsec side. Pulping books was for mass market books that you want to scan quickly & cheaply. Anthropic: doing the same thing. It's fine to disagree with them, but it is Glonzo thinking that they are destroying the permanent human book corpus.
