I also worked on Google Book search on the netsec side. Pulping books was for mass market books that you want to scan quickly & cheaply. Anthropic: doing the same thing. It's fine to disagree with them, but it is Glonzo thinking that they are destroying the permanent human book corpus.

literally these are books that would be pulped if not bought for 10 cents on the dollar. do rare books sometimes make it into there? yeah, if someone is careless, but that's *upstream* of what happens on sale, not *downstream*. you fundamentally are rescuing something from the fucking pulper.
