Inquiring eight-year-olds want to know!

I've been assured this is all age appropriate, but that doesn't stop him from ranting about the inefficiencies and grossness of it all on like a twice-a-month basis.

So aside from the "why can't all this be done with a handshake and tubes" (something he says) of it all, he's also deeply annoyed by the idea that people might have sex for reasons other than having a child.

I have a mini-puriteen on my hands right now. Part of it stems from the fact that he found out that my mom doesn't know her dad, and the idea that people would make a child without WANTING to make a child has kind of outraged him.

Conversely, parents of bsky, what parenting theories did you have before having kids that were proven right?

“I’ll give you something to cry about” is counterproductive.

I can't remember for sure (22 years ago this fall), but probably "food, rest, affectionate attention, and interesting diversions can't solve every problem, but they solve a lot of them -- and it's harder to work on solving the rest without them".

That's such good advice.

Kids are whole people whose preferences are real, whose thoughts are deeply considered, and whose feelings are deeply felt and should be treated as such.

I do think atheism is part of my identify, but using that term fails to explain what I do believe in.

I think there's a stigma for copping to Atheism, so a lot of people just say, "I was raised Lutheran."

Ooh, good one. The one where I really lucked out went: "We don't give children juvenile versions of myths, epics, and folk tales because the originals are too hard, and they won'f like them. We do it because they are violent, sexy, and wicked, and they will like them."

Most of what kids do that seems defiant has nothing to do with you, the parent. They have internal lives and most acting out is in response to something that doesn't involve you at all, you're just convenient and relatively safe to work out their emotions on. Don't take things too personally.

Ohhh, I LOVE this.

Mine is that we can swear in the household, let our kid swear in the household, and he'll understand the difference between words we use at home and words we use at school. Two years of preschool, three years of public school, he's never gotten in trouble for dropping an f-bomb yet.
