Most of what kids do that seems defiant has nothing to do with you, the parent. They have internal lives and most acting out is in response to something that doesn't involve you at all, you're just convenient and relatively safe to work out their emotions on. Don't take things too personally.

I watched a U of R video about their rats-driving-cars program again and had this sudden thought of a post-apocalyptic world where humanity was destroyed because we weaponized rats driving military mechs and they turned on us. We would deserve it for everything we've done to rats, really.

When I lived in Northern Virginia there were fewer locations of all the chains, everything was much, much further away, and the traffic was exponentially worse, and running errands was still tolerable.

What baffled me about Vegas when I moved and still doesn't make sense is that every chain has a bunch of locations. Is no one willing to drive out of their own actual neighborhood? If they went down to two Michael's but didn't fire anyone, the stores might actually be reasonably staffed.

Michaels in this area has moved to self checkout but since they don't schedule enough people the person overseeing self checkout often gets pulled away. It's fully an honor system up front at this point.
