So there is a difference between prison abolition and "abolish ICE". But it is a bit more nuanced than just one actually wanting to abolish the thing and the other not.

There is also the difference in understanding of what a "prison" is. Some prison abolitionists would insist "prison" refers to the punitive and frankly torturous institutions we have today and some forms of coercive confinement are not "prison".

It's a bit more complicated. Prison abolitionists do want to get rid of prisons. But the goal is to do so by making them obsolete and most agree that will take a while. So the plan is not to shut down prisons tomorrow, but rather to avoid putting people in prison as much as possible.

I think the main idea of prison abolition is that coercive confinement should be a last resort and we should always try to find alternatives. And in the meantime, make such confinement not torturous. Maybe we'll never fully get rid of it, but we should keep trying.

I don't necessarily disagree. It may be that we can find a way to communicate that preserves the "abolish prisons" phrase while reducing misunderstanding. I just don't know what that looks like.

The fact that there are bad faith actors doesn't mean there isn't also bad communication. I've found it's pretty common for prison abolitionists to admit they initially made the same mistake @piri.bsky.social made above. At a certain point we should admit it's on us to improve how we communicate.

Ok, but if we keep encountering people who think it means letting rapists and murderers wander the streets, maybe it's a sign that the way we communicate about it is bad. (Not to mention how often when you explain the ideas to people they say something like "that's just a smaller nicer prison!")

I'm not sure it's true for much of abolitionist literature and I wish it was. I remember looking for it in Angela Davis' work and being very frustrated that she didn't articulate a positive vision that dealt with the very real possibility that not all violence can be prevented peacefully.

Yeah, I'm cherry picking. But I insist. Republicans win on crime and immigration because *nobody* wants diet racism. If you want to win you have to either go full racist (don't) or present a genuinely different perspective on those issues.

He has a technocratic bent that is attractive to some of us. If he just wrote about cool research using the administrative datasets of nordic countries, he would still be on my reading list. But I just don't have any patience for throwing innocent people under the bus.

It is valuable for people to talk about leftist ideas in public, so yes, it would be better if it was well-paid.
