The UK Environment Agency declares ‘Flash Drought’ in the UK - a very rapid drying of the landscape due to low rainfall and high temperatures & evaporation. Flash drought is an emerging problem in Australia and the US, incredible to hear it mentioned in the UK. #newclimate

More than half of England officially in drought, the Environment Agency says England received just 7% of expected rainfall in July and only 1% in the south. Notably, the news report makes no explicit mention of climate change. Come on, @bbcnewsunofficial.bsky.social www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

New post out on Weather West on the upcoming intense, double-peaked heatwave event in the Pacific Southwest. What are the (indirect) links to Hurricane Genevieve? (Substantial.) And also: will California see an uptick in wildfire activity? (Probably yes.)

Building Western ridge will bring double-peaked Southwest U.S. heatwave into August, with elevated humidity persisting in SoCal due to very warm ocean - Weather WestJuly 28, 2026 - Daniel Swain - Continued ocean warming brings increasingly warm and humid conditions to coastal SoCal In recent weeks, the Pacific Ocean along the immediate Pacific Coast has continued to warm. Earlier this year, I mentioned that this was not yet due to El Niño because...well, El Niño had not developed yet (and was, instead, related to other patterns #weatherwest.com

Down to the wire in Denver as well as nationally. Denver's July avg thru 7/28 is 78.8F, well ahead of all other months on record except for July 2012 (78.9F). Forecast thru Fri is ever so slightly milder. So most likely July will be Denver's second-hottest month in 155 years of recordkeeping.

It's going to be a close call, but it now appears more likely than not that July 2026 will be the warmest month on record in the Contiguous U.S. As of today, we are essentially tied with July 1936 and July 2012. 🔥

"This drought isn't just about a lack of rain," said Prof @hayleyjfowler.bsky.social of @newcastleuni.bsky.social University. "It's the result of hotter temperatures from a #climate, rising water demand, ageing infrastructure and too much water being lost through leaks."
