Are folks just going through the basic motions at work at this point? All feels pretty pointless while people are getting abducted, killed, disappeared in our very own communities.

Worth noting that Barnes and his team have been under fire for their treatment of Seattle's LGBTQ+ community in several contexts and that SPD is currently being sued for alleged discrimination involving, among other things, a comment by Barnes' top staffer that "we're not here for the gays."

Like any community, we're allowed to disagree, debate, and bring different politics, priorities, experiences, class & gender dynamics, and visions for the future. None of that makes anyone less authentically Black. A community of 52,000 people isn't required to think alike, and shouldn't have to.

There are more than 52,000 Black people in Seattle. That's larger than the population of 255 cities in Washington. So can we please stop talking about "the Black community" as though it's a monolith?

instead of saying “you’re only allowed to build single family homes” in most of California we need to say “you can build dense housing” in urban parts near resources and jobs and “you are not allowed to build anything” in wild spaces

My position is that CEQA must be radically strengthened to safeguard California's wild spaces. This commitment is the thing that sets our state apart. The only way this preservation is feasible is through a parallel commitment to urban zoning capacity for a California with 100+ million residents.

My takeaway, we’ve got a lot of work to do at the state level. In gun violence prevention, in juvenile rehabilitation reform, in state prison reform, to stop these cycles of violence from continuing in every neighborhood, including mine. Including here.

What cities and counties CAN do and I know @mayor.seattle.gov and @girmayzahilay.bsky.social are committed to do is gun violence prevention in communities. It’s disrupting cycles of gang violence. It’s offering young people pathways to a future where they belong. We’ve got a lot more to do here too

Vigils are not the place for Civics 101, But cities in WA cannot make their own gun laws. Only the state can. And even though we’ve been making huge strides thanks to @momsdemandaction.org & others, our work failed to prevent this tragedy. I failed you. #waleg failed you.
