I would have said 99.99% but was hitting the character limit. but that further illustrates my point: all it takes is a tiny proportion of emotionally disturbed people to ruin the day of thousands, if not millions (when pulling an emergency break causes a derailment)

I don’t think they should be thrown in jail. I think we need well-funded and humane conservatorship programs at mental hospitals so people like this can get better instead of continuing to spiral downwards and likely ending up in jail anyway

huh? the MTA has defined maintenance schedules, but vandalism results in them swapping out parts before they reach the end of their useful life

no, because unlike you I actually want to make the city better

New York City and other blue cities have very generous social services! that’s great! and it helps on the margin, but it doesn’t magically prevent severely emotionally disturbed people from exhibiting antisocial and dangerous behavior

yeah it’s tough because idk what the right label is. The average “tough on crime” right winger is full of shit also some of the most antisocial behavior in public I have witnessed was in Dallas, under a Republican mayor and state government

the thing is like, New York doesn’t have *that* many highly disturbed people wandering in public. probably no more than 0.1% of the population. but that small portion can cause such disproportionate damage that I really think investing in conservatorship facilities would pay for itself

I really wish the NYPD devoted resources to this too. modifying your car to make it louder is the sign of a truly diseased mind and these vehicles should be impounded and destroyed

Yeah, I think more antisocial behavior needs to be discouraged/punished. prime example is cars and motorcycles with modded exhaust that should be massively fined + impounded + crushed
