Like any community, we're allowed to disagree, debate, and bring different politics, priorities, experiences, class & gender dynamics, and visions for the future. None of that makes anyone less authentically Black. A community of 52,000 people isn't required to think alike, and shouldn't have to.

There are more than 52,000 Black people in Seattle. That's larger than the population of 255 cities in Washington. So can we please stop talking about "the Black community" as though it's a monolith?

I don't disagree and definitely get the impulse. But I think part of the work of building a stronger city is expanding our circle of identification, so that a family grieving in Rainier Beach feels no less connected to us than one grieving at Seattle Center.

Fair point. That said, Garfield students in the Central District experienced a similar situation in 2024, when they fled the school after a random shooting nearby. The public reaction certainly didn't reach the level we've seen in response to this one.

I completely get why some businesses are frustrated that they didn't see a World Cup sales bump. But why expect tourists to support POC-owned businesses if many don't support them where they live? Seattle's future depends on Seattleites showing up for these businesses day after day, not visitors.
