Were this summer’s heatwaves caused by El Niño, or something even more terrifying? www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2026...

A genuinely sound company and excellent coffee too. Support them if you can. #speirgorm
Imbibe Coffee RoastersEthical or supposedly ethical businesses can seem complicated or short on detail when you scratch the surface of promises. What we do is really simple. We give up 4% of all our income which has been over 30%of profits in each of last 4 years. We're not a social enterprise or charity.

This summer has made it abundantly clear that we need rewetting across all landscapes, varied habitats, firebreaks and a recalibration of what we use water for, and in ireland, a massive growth and restoration of our degraded ecosystems like bog and wet woodlands that are naturally fire resistant

You see everything is connected. The marine heatwaves off the coasts of Europe make heatwaves on land more intense, which in turn dries out vegetation, which then creates perfect fire weather conditions. Brought to you by the world's refusal to drastically reduce the burning of fossil fuels.

Exhibit A. Was it weaponised NGOs that did this? Or who was in government all that time?
Josef O'SheaIt's not NGOs that have blocked drinkable water or a basic public transport system for my city - or will blow the chance to cash in on the huge potential for renewable energy along our coast...

Who would have originally acquired the land for golf links in particular? How would they have obtained ownership, and when? Take Salthill Golf Club for example. Once upon a time at least part of that would have been sand dunes. How does any private entity end up owning a chunk of the shoreline?

Golf courses take up valuable green space on and around urban areas. They offer poor biodiversity value, use plenty of herbicides and pesticides, have poor water retention (the greens are all super free draining) and are used by a select few compared to an urban park open to the public.
Son of the WolfApparently golf courses can use between 100,000 and 500,000 litres of water a day (double that in a heatwave) and are exempt from the national hosepipe ban. Nice to see another example of who and what this government prioritises. #speirghorm
