Climate chaos in so many places as we reach ~1.5°C of heating and ~427 ppm CO2 in the atmosphere. According to the last UNEP Emissions Gap Report (2025) there is a 75% chance of breaching 2°C with “unconditional NDCs continuing.” Translated: We will cross 2°C Imagine the chaos then.

Fires in France have now burned over 91,000 acres, by far the most of any year since the satellite record started in 2006. Current area burned is about 34x larger than this date in a typical (median) year:

Fires start for all kinds of reasons including everything you mention, as well as lightning strikes one should add. This conversation is not about that. This conversation is about the *baseline conditions* in which these fires now burn that has dramatically changed.

btw note they said "2024 might remain warmer than 2026 in July." It seems like this is how it will play out. In the ERA5 dataset July 2024 was 1.48ºC above preindustrial. July 2026 in the same dataset looks like it will end at ~1.43ºC

You see everything is connected. The marine heatwaves off the coasts of Europe make heatwaves on land more intense, which in turn dries out vegetation, which then creates perfect fire weather conditions. Brought to you by the world's refusal to drastically reduce the burning of fossil fuels.
