Emily Wilson gets one more piece on The Odyssey and then she needs to move on and let us know what she thinks about Mallrats
sometimes the internet is a wonder, sometimes the internet is a mistake and sometimes the internet brings you "cheerleading 9/11" and has transcended the need for adjectives
CSketchOh my god I think I found the video.
Most published claims of sex-dependent effects in the neurosciences are missing statistical evidence that the effect differed by sex. We can do better. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/... @ossdcomm.bsky.social @sbn-bsky.bsky.social @emoryuniversity.bsky.social @pnas.org @colbyvorland.bsky.social
This. Something to ask the PM on bridge run.
2covet#nzpol In light of the -10⁰C predicted for tomorrow, can the Aotearoa NZ Govt press pool ask the PM and his many ministers what is being done for the thousands of homeless around the motū who are now forced to sleep rough, in bushejs, under bridges, or in garages, or in their cars. #MontageTime

It's genuinely a massive problem that the median voter both 1) believes "criminal illegal immigrants" to be an astronomically more serious threat than they actually are, and 2) believes that the legal immigration process is substantially easier than it actually is.
Sunsette / Cynthia SkyeI understand your position, but those are different situations. People straight up both envision a system much milder than exists and cannot imagine a modern world without that imaginary system. Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion skeletons in Jason and the Argonauts are amazing even now. He animated the sequence by himself for more than four months -- without computers or even an easy way to check his work. We're looking into how he did it: animationobsessive.substack.com/p/how-ray-ha...
The richest person in the world, an avowed white supremacist, today again posted "the next step is getting rid of 'source code' entirely and just making an efficient binary directly with AI" because he has no idea how anything works, not even the basics of industries he is in.
LLMs have reached the point that they can be useful as proof assistants. Increasingly, they appear capable even of generating entire proofs that are correct. But in my experience, their best proofs are just correct. They aren't explanatory the way a good human proof is. Here's Cris Moore:
He will never understand that being "the fat guy from Superbad" is infinitely better than being "the martial arts chud nobody likes"
i’m never gonna be able to fire a cruise missile yet the question of using my tax dollars for them has never been up for debate
USA TODAY OpinionOpinion: Mamdani's idea may sound appealing, but it's NYC taxpayers who will take the hit, subsidizing discounts they may never even use.
MSc and PhD students are the workforce in the engine room of our public research system. They are very, very cheap labor by policy design. This talk about a 'cost blowout' is utter rubbish. We frown on company owners that charge people to get a job. We should be doing the same here. #NZPOL
