Philosophy PhD student at the University of Waikato (working on how regular people figure out when to trust experts) but I mainly joke about tech and cats. Former telco product manager, data guy and financial crime analyst. https://ko-fi.com/andrealessi

This is another one of Winston's "we'll promise this to win an election then blame someone else when we never make it happen" policies.

Winston Peters wants to pay people up to $45k, tax free, to have three kids. It’s a policy with a very nativist bent that will naturally draw comparisons to the “great replacement theory” conspiracy. www.thepost.co.nz/politics/361...

As far as I can tell, the business case for NZ data centres is still entirely dependent on projections for compute and storage that are based on nothing more than extremely optimistic vibes. Our existing local centres aren't at capacity and won't be for a while.

It's still so cold in Kirikiriroa this morning that I only briefly got out of bed to make my coffee, then climbed straight back in. Oscar has been welded to my lap ever since, he is not moving for anything.

Showing this ad to my cat as a threat if he doesn't stop waking me up at 3 am for treats.

Despite the garbage AI photos on their site, the company Cuddle Clones does truly make extremely expensive plush replicas of your pets (my roommates got me one in college) They've now released warmable versions (a weighted plush that you can heat in the microwave) leading to these unhinged AI ads

A sentence I just typed in a work email: "This morning's tutorial discussion on the question of posthumous harms did inspire a surprisingly passionate debate about necrophilia in one group. It was salient to the material so I didn't interrupt until near the end." #justphilosophythings

I think Nolan's choice to contrast which god the crew thought had cursed them (Poseidon) vs which god Odysseus knew had cursed them and why (Athena) really paid off thematically and structurally.

My heart started pounding the moment I realized Odysseus and his men were on Polyphemus' island, and I still wasn't prepared for how terrifying things got.
